Deed Book D

 
  (D/1)  On the first three pages of Deed Book "D" is certified copy of a criminal case in North
Carolina in which Nathan ATKINSON who afterwards settled and lived and died i Camden Couny, was
indicted for murder, tried and convicted.  Just why such a record should be recorded in Georgia
years after the trial took place, we do not know unless it was to embarrass and discredit Mr.
ATKINSON.  The certified Copy is dated Aug. 27, 1798,by Clerk Superior Court of Craven Co., 
N.C., and shows that the Indictment for murder was returned by the Grand Jury Nov. 22, 1786, 
charging the defendant Nathan ATKINSON with the murder of Cary JERNIGAN late of Johnson Co., 
N.C. on Aug. 20, 1786 in Craven Co., N.C.  Two days after the indictment the defendant was 
brought to trial. The names of the jurors were no shown.  Verdict of quilty was returned same 
day (Nov. 24, 1786) and the defendant was sentenced to be hanged "by the neck until dead" on 
Friday, Dec. 8, 1786 by the Sherill of Craven County.  It does not appear how the defendant 
escaped his death-sentence.  JERNIGAN, the deceased was a Tory and ATKINSON was Rev. Soldier.
 
  (D/8)  James VINCENCT to his wife Nancy VINCENT and their children, James, Nancy, Pollie, 
Esther and Sally VINCENT, deed of gift dated May 16, 1794, conveying 100 acres known as "Yankee
Hall", 550 acres of marsh land adjoining same, 200 acres marsh land on Cumberland island, six
horses, 12 cows, 1 slave.
 
  (D/70)  Marriage contract dated June 8, 1787, between John DILWORTH , Gentleman, and Armintha
SOWERSBY, widow of Henry SOWERSBY, whereby it was agreed that all of her estate valued at about
2000L was to be held by George WOODLAND, Gentleman as her Trustee, free and clear of any claims
by her intended husband.
 
  (D/86)  John BANKS of Charleston, S.C., and Ichabo BURNETT also of Charleston, to Gen.
Nathaniel GREENE, ESQ., deed dated Aug. 11, 1783, conveying Cumberland Island and other property
as follows:  Lots 390 and 391 in town of Brunswick, Ga., granted David OLIPHANT by KING GEORGE
III in 1772, and 2000 acres on the head of Crooked River in St. Marys Parish, Ga., granted said 
OLIPHANT; also the grantors' on-half undevided interest in nine tracts ofland as follows:  (1)
1400 acres in St. Marys Parish, Ga., on Little Cumberland Island, granted July 6, 1767 to James 
HABERSHAM;  (2) 200 acres of Great Cumberland Island, granted Apr. 7, 1767 to Jonathan BRYAN;
(3) 200 acres granted on Great Cumberland granted John SMITH;  (4) 1500 acres on Great 
Cumberland granted Aug. 5, 1766 to James CUTHBERT; (5) 2000 acres same island granted June 1,

Jonathan BRYAN.  Said properties having been sold and deeded by Jonathan BRAYN in 1770 to Thomas 
LYNCE and Alexander ROSE of Charleston, and ROSE in 1773 sold his interest to Dr. David OLIPHANT 
of Charleston and the latter deeded it to John MCQUEEN, ESQ., and he to the grantors in this 
deed.

  (E/216)  Peter MALLETT, ESQ., of Bladen County, N.C.  His certificated executed in Bladen Co.,
N.C., before Nathan HALL, J.P., states that he is about to send 33 slaves to St. Marys, Ga., c/o
James SEAGROVE, EXQ., for the use of his (MALLETT'S) daughter, Sarah Jane SMITH, wife of William
SMITH, who is about to remove to Camden County, and live at St. Marys.  He states that the 
reason he does not send them direct to SMITH himself is because of SMITH'S "difficulties as a 
merchant at St. Marys".  Certificate dated March 1, 1801.  In a separate annexed paper, James 
SEAGROVE,  J.I.C., certifies the negroes were landed at his plantation a Point Peter in April, 
1801, ariving on the Sloop "Peggy", with David CANNON, Overseer, in charge of them.

HAZZARD, Sr., by the Gov. of S.C., on May 21, 1763, land lying on head of Little Satilla River 
in present Camden Co., About three miles west of Spring Bluff.  It is stated that William 
HAZZARD, Sr., by his will devised this property to his wife (unnamed in deed) and that she 
deeded it to her only son, William HAZZARD, the grantor in the present deed.

  (F/83)  On this page is a list of negroes, thirty-six in number, the property of Robert 
MCFARLAND and the heirs of Thomas STARRAT, deceased, brought to Camden County from Georgetown,
SC., to settle them here. Dated Feb. 7, 1803.
 
  (F/83)  List of 27 slaves on this page, belonging to Daniel BKUE, brought by him from Norfolk,
VA., to Camden County, March 18, 1803.  Certificate made in Norfolk, Va.,  by Samuel MOSELEY, 
one of the Alderman there, who state that King and Thomas HOLLIDAY of the borough of Norfolk 
made oath before him that said Daniel BLUE was there in Jyly and August, 1802, and purchased 
between 60 and 70 slaves and moved them to Georgia, and that he did not purchase them to 
re-sell.

1805, conveying 513 acres granted by the State to James WOODLAND.  In a memorandum attached, 
grantor refers to said James WOODLAND as his father.

Camden County, deed dated Apr. 13, 1803.  This deed recited:  "Whereas, on April 25, 1797, said
Chevalier bounty of James MACOMB and wife Mary a part of lot #5 in the town of St. Marys, and
on Aug. 7, 1797, Macomb and wife deeded Peter MADDEN, merchant, then of Savannah, anaother part
of said lot 5 and which was deeded by MADDEN to CHEVALIER; and wheeas, said CHEVALIER hath
bargained to sell same to the following persons who compoe "The Steam Sawmill Company" of Camden
County, viz:  James SEAGROVE, George KERR, John COUPER, Thomas KING, Rudoulph MCGILLIS, Phineas 
MILLER, John C. NIGHTENGALE, Peyton SKIPWITH, JR., William COOK and William Pitt SANDS;  this 
deed is now by their desire made to said William Pitt SANDS in trust for all of them in equal 
shares.  Consideration $700.00.

Andrew DOUGLAS and by him deeded Jan. 13, 1793, to Robert SEAGROVE, now deceased;  and then by
James SEAGROVE the hear-at-law and only surviving brother of Robert SEABROVE, to the grantor
SKIPWITH by deed dated Feb. 9, 1802.

acres adjoining, granted John BOYKIN and Peter CASITY and by them deeded to grantor.

1805, conveying 1500 acres on St. Marys River and adjoining the ndian line known as Ellicott's
Line as run by Joseph ELLICOTT in 1792-93;  also 1397 acres on same line, and also 496 acres 
on said line adjoining LANGLEY BRYANT and William PIERCE.

Columbia, and Isaac POLLOCK of Maryland.  Deed dated Nov. 1, 1805 conveying 25,000 acres except
