Warren/Shirey/Shirah

Has Carroll County ever done a Heritage Book? If
they have and
someone has it, can you tell me if it has any Warrens in it?
Also, need help to figure this one out if someone is connected to the
Shirey or Shirah surnames.
Susan B. WARREN b. July 1892 m. 13 May 1911 R.S. SHIREY b.ca. 1882
GA (Lived Carrolton, GA 1962) Living with father in 1900 in
Roopville, Carroll Co. GA. (not sure of this one. A Susie Warren
married R.S. Shirah in marriage book but 1930 census has them
Shirey). In 1930 they are farming in Lowell, Carroll Co. GA. Their
children:
Woodrow SHIREY b.ca. 1916 GA
Alton SHIREY b.ca. 1918 GA
Nellie SHIREY b.ca. 1920 GA
Roy SHIREY b.ca. 1922 GA
AND:
John Henry WARREN (b.25 April 1879 GA. d. 5 June 1948 Carroll Co.
GA.) m.1. 1900 in Carroll Co. GA Etta SMITH,m.2 9 Oct 1904 Ollie M.
SHIREY b. 2 Apr 1879 GA d. 24 Jan 1949 Carroll Co. GA. (My
problem on this one is I find two children, a Marjorie Shirey and a
Buford Shirley living in 1930 census with Lunn Chatworth, and 'Ollie'
is listed as wife.) Does anyone recognize this family who might be
able to help me figure out what actually happened?
I live in Washington State--am a 'Warren family researcher.' Thanks!

am not related to these Shirey families but researched them a few years
ago (or longer) because of a Shirey/Lewis marriage connected to my Ashley
family in Heard County, Georgia.
I would guess that R.S. Shirey is Rufus Sidney Shirey, born April 30, 1881
in Heard county, Georgia; he married 1st to a Hattie Smith on Aug. 30, 1903
in Heard County, Ga. Don't know if she died or if they divorced or what
happened to her. But Rufus Sidney Shirey is in Carroll County, Georgia in
1920 census with a wife Susie, and children Woodrow, Alton and Nellie M.
(Can't find them in 1910 census. )
Rufus Sidney Shirey was in Heard County, Georgia in 1918 when he registered
for the WWI Draft:
Name: Rufus Sidney Shiry
City:
County: Heard
State: Georgia
Birth Date: 30 Apr 1881
Race: White
Next of Kin listed as Susie Shiry
Date: Sept. 12, 1918
------------
The Shirey families alternated the spelling of the name from Shirey to
Shirah and other mis-spellings in various census's, so it is difficult to
find them sometimes, as the soundex does not always work.
Rufus Sidney Shirey had a sister named Ollie Shirey. They were both
children of Newnan Franklin "Frank" Shirey and his wife Mary, who lived in
Heard County, Georgia. I don't know who Ollie Shirey married.

DEAN
I am researching a DEAN family in Carroll County. At this point I can't say
that they connect to your DEANs, but I'm happy to share what I have. It may mean
something down the road. My DEAN family was in Henry County, Georgia, in 1850,
but in Carroll County in 1860 and subsequent years. I haven't gone as far as
researching Jefferson DEAN's parents/siblings. I wonder if your Jno. DEAN could
have been an older brother. I would appreciate any info you have to share. Pam
1850 census, Henry County, Georgia, District 42, page 290B, enumerated November
13, 1850:
Dwelling 1683:
J. Dean, age 33, male, farmer, born Te.
M. Dean, age 20, female, born Georgia, cannot read or write
M. A. Dean, age 2, female, born Georgia
M. V. Dean, age 1, female, born Georgia
1860 census, Carroll County, Georgia, Laurell Hill Post Office, 11th District,
page 2, enumerated June 28, 1860:
Dwelling 8:
Jeff Deen, age 44, male, farmer, value of personal estate $85, born NC
Martha, age 30, female, born Georgia, cannot read or write
Nancy A., age 12, female, born Georgia, attended school within the year
Miranda V., age 11, female, born Georgia, attended school within the year
Francis, age 8, female, born Georgia, attended school within the year
Sarah E., age 5, female, born Georgia
Nancy E., age 3, female, born Georgia
Joseph J. age 1, male, born Georgia
Note: I believe Nancy A., age 12, is the same as M.A. Dean, age 2, on 1850
census and I believe she is my gr-gr-grandmother, Mary Dean Gibson/Gipson, but
cannot prove it. Nancy is sometimes a nickname for Mary Ann. Also, the census
taker may have made a mistake and listed two daughters as Nancy.

Lillian Henderson, page 855: "Dean, Jefferson - Private June 1862. Captured at

Nancy, age 14, female, white, at home, born Georgia, cannot read or write
Joseph, age 10, male, white, at home, born Georgia, cannot read or write
Freedonia, age 8, female, white, at home, born Georgia
1880 census, Carroll County, Georgia, 1163 Ga. Militia Dist., page 39, enumerated
June 22, 1880:
Dean, Martha, white, female, age 45, widow, farming, born Georgia, parents born
Georgia
Maronda, white, female, age 30, daughter, single, at home, born Georgia, parents
born Georgia
Joseph, white, male, age 20, son, single, at home, born Georgia, parents born
Georgia
Donia, white, female, age 18, daughter, single, at home, born Georgia, parents
born Georgia
Note 1: This Dean family is listed on 1880 census just after the household of
Hails Gibson and wife, Mary [believe this to be Martha's daughter, Mary Dean).
Note 2: Martha's age is wrong. She would have been 50 in 1880.

Note: Believe William Gipson is grandson of Martha Dean, through her daughter,
Mary Dean, who married Hale Gipson. It appears that William and family were
living near and maybe renting from Martha Dean.

BOYD
I would like to pose a theory for discussion which may shed some light on a
question that seems to have plagued researchers of ROBERT BOYD and ROSANNAH
STEWART for decades. This will involve all descendants of JOHN BOYD, Sr., known
generally as John Boyd of Ballymena. This John Boyd Sr. was from County Antrim,
Ireland, and appeared in South Carolina sometime before 1772, when he
petitioned the South Carolina Council for a grant of land. He died in Newberry in
1806.
Much has been written on his known descendants, John, Hugh and David. This
theory may add another son, my Robert Boyd of Newberry County, SC who moved to
Meriwether County, GA about 1832-33. His descendants later moved to Carroll
County. Many are buried at Powell's Chapel UMC near Villa Rica.
Robert was in Newberry in the 1830 census, but made land purchases in
Meriwether in 1833 and 1834. I have copies of the actual deeds filed in the
Meriwether County courthouse. He lived with his son William in 1840 and died in
1846-47. His burial place has never been located. However, information has
recently
surfaced of a cemetery containing 8 unmarked adult graves and 1 infant grave
which appears to be in the vicinity of the Boyd land. This is being investigated
by two of us who live in the area.
As most of you may know, I have been studying the family of this Robert Boyd
intensely for the past five years. He was my 4th great-grandfather.
This theory was proposed to me about four weeks ago by another Boyd
researcher, Mr. Robert Wells, who is descended from David Boyd, son of John Boyd
of
Ballymena. Robert gets all the credit for putting the facts together (some which
I knew, some which I didn't know) and coming up with this theory. I thought it
was pure poppycock, but after hearing him out and researching the facts
myself, I have come to the conclusion that this is the most likely answer to the
puzzle. It was right under our noses and I am amazed that others didn't see it
(including me).
First, we have to throw out some bad information which seems to have been
accepted by many as being true.
BAD INFO NO. 1: George Lelend Summer in his "Newberry County South Carolina
Historical and Genealogical Annals," page 198, states that John Boyd Sr.'s
estate was administered in 1806 by his sons John and David, since his other son,
Hugh, had died in 1799. This is absolutely not true. I have a copy of these
estate papers and the estate was administered by Robert Boyd and Mary Boyd (the
widow), with John Kinnard and Hugh Hopper as security. My thanks to Dick
Stewart for transcribing the estate papers and sending them to me. Dick is
descended
from the parents of Rosannah Stewart, Joseph and Mary Stewart.
BAD INFO NO. 2: Those who know that a Robert Boyd administered the estate of
John Boyd., Sr., have accepted the information that this Robert Boyd was the
grandson of John Boyd. Sr. If they are referring to the Robert H. Boyd, son of
the deceased son Hugh Boyd, as being the administrator, this also is not true.
Robert H. Boyd, son of Hugh and Jennett Boyd, was born about 1792 and would
only be 14 years old when his grandfather's estate was administered in 1806.
This has recently been proved with information that this Robert H. Boyd married
Cloretta Gray and moved to Meriwether County about 1837-1838 when he purchased
land there. I have accumulated much information on Robert H. Boyd and his
descendants. He died in 1857 in Meriwether County and I have transcribed copies
of his estate papers. Of John Boyd Sr.'s other known sons, John and David,
neither had a son named Robert.
In 1806, when John Boyd Sr. died, one of his sons, John (known as Johnny
Buckles because of his occupation as a harness maker and shoe buckler), was in
Kentucky. As mentioned before, Hugh Boyd, another son, had died 7 years
previously. This left only David, the other known son, to administer the estate.
But
David did not. Robert did. Why? I believe it was because Robert was another son
of John Boyd Sr.
When Hugh Boyd made his will in 1798, Robert Boyd was a witness to his will.
This could not possibly have been his son, Robert H. Boyd, since he would have
been only 6 or 7 years old. I believe this Robert Boyd was Hugh Boyd's
brother. The other witnesses were John Boyd "Wheelwright" (Hugh's father) and
Archibald McMellan/McMillan. (Robert Boyd's son, Joseph) married Jane McMillan,
relationship to Archibald as yet unknown.)
An analysis of the estate sale of John Boyd, Sr., shows that the widow, Mary
Boyd, purchased 38 items, as is customary. Robert Boyd purchased 15 items,
indicating (but not proof, of course) that he also was a family member. (Thanks,
again, to Dick Stewart, for this analysis. I think this is when my eyes
started opening to the truth.)
Of the other purchasers (the next highest number of items was purchased by
William Hopper -- 7 items) three of them carried surnames of those who married
Robert's children --- Hopper, Blackburn and McMillan. Robert's son Hugh,
married Nancy Hopper. His son, John, married Elizabeth Blackburn, and, as
mentioned
before, his son Joseph married Jane McMillan. Many more purchasers are known
to have had relationships with this Boyd family.
In the 1810 census of Newberry, Robert Boyd is shown living next door to Mary
Boyd, with Hugh Hopper, William Hopper and John Hopper on the other side.
It is now a known fact that Robert Boyd's son, William, married Rosannah
Boyd, daughter of Hugh and Jennett Boyd. Proof lies in the will of Matthew Boyd,
son of Hugh and Jennett, who left part of his estate to his sister, Rosannah,
and her children. These children of Rosannah were specifically mentioned in
later annual returns (Newberry) as being named Hugh and Melinda. In 1840 in
Meriwether County, William Boyd (son of Robert) applied for guardianship of his
children, Hugh and Melinda (I transcribed a copy of this document from Meriwether
County), and shows in the 1850 census with a wife named Rosanna. Hugh and
Melinda had both married by this time and were living in the same vicinity ---
Melinda and her husband, Lewis Dudley Groce, were next door.
I have agonized for several years over the close relationship of the Boyds
when they arrived in Meriwether -- known descendants of John Boyd Sr. (Waggoner
Jack and his son James and others who were in Meriwether) and my Robert. They
lived adjacent to each other (I have land lot maps showing which Boyd owned
which land and where it was located), signed each others deeds and other court
documents, and even married into the same families. Robert's daughter, Frances
Boyd, married Mark Tidwell, and Waggoner Jack's son, James, married Amelia
Tidwell who was Mark's sister. I knew these Boyd families had to be related but I
couldn't put my finger on it. This theory, that Robert was the son of John
Sr., makes everything fit together and I believe it to be true. I am truly
grateful to Robert Wells, Carol Wells, and Liz Dial, for help with the research
which led to this conclusion.
For the sake of space, I have left out many details which I will gladly share
with others and would appreciate any thoughts or comments on this theory.
I would also appreciate those who have Robert's parents as Hugh K. and
Rosanna Boyd expressing their logic, source, proof, theories or any information
which led to their conclusions of that relationship. The only way we're going to
get to the bottom of this is by sharing information.

Brenard H. B. Sept 1894 Al. married 3/8/1917 Carroll Co. Ga., Myrtle Nixon

Linda:
I can tell you more on the "Nixon" connection -- Myrtle was the daughter of
Robert Paran Nixon & Annie Lenora Bohanan.
Robert was named for the two gentlemen that saved his father's life in the
War:
Abner Nixon wrote of Robert's name in the family bible:
"I name this child in honor of Dr. Robert Steele of Pinkingville, Illinois,
a Federal Surgeon, and Mr. Paran, a Confederate Soldier. Dr. Steele
amputated my wounded foot march 24, 1863 and treated me kindly while I was
prisoner
of war. Mr. Paran was from Texas. He nursed me while confined after my foot
was amputated. To the kindness of these two men and the helping of God, I
owe my life.
I do not name this child in honor of the Federal cause. I am, was, and will
be a States Rights Democrat."
Per Abner & Eliza Matilda (McSwain) Nixon family bible, in possession of
Andrew Lovelace.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Myrtle's paternal Grandparents were Abner Nixon & Eliza Matilda McSwain.
We would love to determine his parents. . . I think he may be some sort of
Kin to the Absalom "Hawk" Nixon gang of Randolph Co., AL. I think Abner may
have ties to the Old 96/Laurens District, SC area as does Absalom. Her
maternal grandfather was Joseph Alavia Bohannon
Myrtle was also sister to "The Twins" - Mable & Mildred Nixon. Mable
married Joseph Arthur Walls. Mildred married Virgil Preston Nixon, kin to my
husband's Nixon line [Joseph Nixon/Martha Ward of Oglethorpe > Walton > Coweta
Co.). The Twins were born in 1908. Mable died in 2003; Mildred died in 2004,
so they both lived well into their 90s. They did some family research and I
have a copy of the work they did, as Mildred tried to find a connection b/t
her families Nixon branch and that of her husband's.
The Weekly Constitution, Atlanta, Ga. March 14, 1893
Five Thousand Dollars of Good Money Was Found in Villa Rica.
Carrollton, Ga., March 5. -- The finding of $5,000 in a feather bedtick has
caused somewhat of a sensation at Villa Rica. The Constitution announced the
death of Mr. J. M. Hamrick, whose home was in Villa Rica, some days ago, and it
was his money that was found in a bedtick, and what is causing much talk in
Carroll county. Mr. Jimmie was about ninety years old when he died, and had
been a resident of Carroll county for three score years. He was always very
economical in the administration of his private affairs, and it has been known
that he was worth probably $5,000 in all, but since his demise it has turned
out that he was worth from $12,000 to $15,000 and no one knew it but himself.
All the years Uncle Jimmie livedi n Carroll county it has been known that he
saved a small sum of money each year, which he passed to his surplus, but not
even the Hon. J. M. Hamrick, Jr., his only son, knew that he had over $2,000 in
money besides his realty.
Mr. Hamrick always had an antipathy to banks and although he always had case on
hand he never would put his money in a bank until last year. His son, who knew
of his father having $2,000 in gold, part of which was buried on the premises,
persuaded him to deposit it in a bank, and Uncle Jimmie put the same in the
Atlanta National bank. It was thought that this was about all the cash the old
man had until yesterday. Hon. Jim Hamrick, the deceased man's young wife and
some of his daughters ripped open a feather bed on the place and took therefrom
$5,000 in crisp bank notes, all snugly done up in one package. No one knew
where this money was nor that he had it. Uncle Jimmie's young wife knew that
he had a valuable paper sewed up in the feather bed, which he had forbidden an
interference with till after his death, and also gave her particular
instructions not to give information about it. Mrs. Hamrick thought the paper
might be her aged husband's will or some other valuable instrument of writing,
and she guarded the feather bed with an eagle eye during her husband's
lifetime, and after his burial she imparted the information to Mr. Hamrick's
only son. Besides this find other moneys were found, which showed that Uncle
Jimmie had saved up quite a snug sum. His first wife died about three years
ago and he married a second time about two years ago.
