Migration In To Crawford County

This page is an attempt to gather into one place all those people who, at one point or another, migrated into Crawford County, GA from somewhere else.  To submit an entry, please e-mail me with the following information:

ADAMS, Robert & wife Sidney MANDERSON migrated from Bibb Co., GA, by 1830. They previously resided in Baldwin Co., GA, where they married in 1822. Robert was born in England in 1794; Sidney was probably born in
Burke Co, GA, about 1800. Both died in Crawford County, Robert, 9 Nov 1868, and Sidney, 8 June 1872. (Cynthia Nason )

ANDREWS, John migrated to Crawford Co. in 1820 from Ft Hawkins in Macon. At the time John came to Crawford it was then Houston Co. (Lewis Andrews )

BAREFOOT, Mortimer WILSON, born in Hartsville, Darlington County, SC, on May 3, 1848, moved to Crawford County between 1878 and 1900.  Wife - Caroline "Carrie" Howle, born Nov 1852 in Darlington Co, SC;, married abt 1878.  Children - John Francis, Sarah Elizabeth, Minnie Frances, Benjamin "Jimmy," Caroline "Carrie," Margaret "Maggie," Lena, and Dock.  All children were listed on the 1900 Crawford County census (and in independent family research) as being born in SC, but this can't be right, as some were born after 1900, when the family was already in Crawford County. BUNDRICK, John & wife Mary Magdalena "Molly" CLAPP migrated from Newberry Co., SC, by 1839 with sons John Henry, Joseph, William, Zachariah, David, Samuel,  and Adam M., & daughters Efa "Eve" BUNDRICK (married Daniel HAMILTON), Catherine BUNDRICK (married Henry WYRICK), and Christina BUNDRICK. Both John and Molly died in Crawford County, John about 1839 and Molly before 1860. (Cynthia Nason )

COLLIER,  Benjamin (Wife: Ann (Polly) Howard) From Brunswick, Virginia sometime between his birth (1779) and his death (1830).  My research shows he was a judge in Crawford County at some point, but I don't have dates. (Jennifer Collier Jones ←)

DAVIS, Cross R and his wife Huldah DIGBY migrated into Crawford County, Ga. from Baldwin County, Ga.
about 1827/1828. They were married in Baldwin County, Ga. 1827. Cross R was born 1800 in South Carolina
and Huldah was born 1804 South Carolina. They are listed in the 1830 Census of Crawford County with a son,
William J Davis born 1828. Huldah's brother William Digby is living near by. My family is in Talbot County in

DENT, John Washington - was born 2 Mar 1817 in Orangeburgh District SC. He moved with his family to Madison County TN and Marshall Co MS. The first record of him in Crawford County was his marriage 16 Sep 1840 to Elizabeth Hoy. He died 3 Mar 1880 in Crawford County GA. (Honey Lanham Dodge ←)

GRAY, Archibald - brother of Susannah-and Father of Amanda who married William M. Brown and Arch's wife Cynthia Armour migrated from Greene to Pike with the 1827 Land Lottery and by 1829 had a Ferry on the line of Crawford. (Gerry Hill ←)

HAMILTON, Zachariah & James Black Hamilton migrated from Fairfield Co. SC. between the 1820 and 1830 census. (Gerry Hill ←)

HANCOCK, Clement, Jr. & wife Temperance JACKSON - moved to Crawford County from Wilkinson County, GA between the 1820 and 1830 censuses. Prior to moving to Wilkinson in 1810, the Hancock family lived in Warren County, GA.  Clement, Jr.'s brothers John and William HANCOCK also migrated to Crawford County from Wilkinson between 1820 and 1830. HARRELL, Samuel, born in NC about 1795 and found first in Twiggs County, Georgia on the 1830 census.  Wife - Mary, children - Isaac, Jesse, Claricy, Sarah, William, Mary, Samuel, Patience and Elizabeth. Samuel bought property in Crawford County, GA on Oct. 24, 1853. He and his family are on the 1860, 1870 and 1880 Crawford County GA census reports. Samuel died about September 1882 in Crawford Co. according to his will.  (Cheryl Aultman ←)

HARRISON, Jonathan & wife Rachel CULLEN and some of their children migrated from Jones Co., GA, by 1827. The couple had migrated from Gates Co., NC, by 1816 to Jones County. Both had previously been married and had children by these marriages. Rachel married first to William HOBBS, then second to his first cousin Aaron HOBBS. Most of this family had left by 1839 for Randolph/Stewart County, GA. (Cynthia Nason )

HARRISON, Margaret b. 1821 NC married John F. Allday in Stewart County GA in 1842. The Alldays had migrated from Burke County, GA c. 1832. Who among the Harrisons in Crawford and Stewart Counties did Margaret belong to? Her daughter was named Rachel Allday. A son was named James Watt Allday. (Ann Stacy  )

HATCHER, John, Jr. and wife Margaret "Peggy" LORD moved to Crawford County from Wilkinson County, GA in 1825.  The Hatcher family had lived in Warren County prior to moving to Wilkinson County in 1810. (Joyce R. Harrison ←)

MCMICHAEL, Rueben, Born in Putnam and Greene Co. Ga., was in Crawford by the 1830 census. His brother John married Mary Jane Howe, dtr of Robert in 1829. In 1832 Reuben married Margaret Elizabeth Sanders Lawrence. (Gerry Hill ←)

SLOAN, Nathaniel, b.1790-1800 in Darlington Distr, S.C with wife Mary and children: William E. Sloan, James W. Sloan, John A. Sloan and Margaret A. Sloan moved to Crawford (Houston) Co from Darlington S.C before 1830.  (Bob Sloan ←)

SPAIN, William B (Batte), born 1834 Monroe Co Ga to Benjamin & Mary Cobb married Crawford 23 Jul 1854 Mary J. Cox born 1837 Ga. Parents born SC. By 1860 they were in Milledgeville, Baldwin with two daughters, and by 1880 they were back in Crawford with one more child. (Gerry Hill ←)

STEMBRIDGE (Henry, Thos, James, John)  - in early 1800s... They came FROM "HANCOCK CO., GA", and before that had been in 1700s in LUNENBURG & MECKLENBURG COS., VA.  (and from England before that).  Allied lines:  BRIMBERRY, PATTERSON, GREGORY, SLAUGHTER, McBRIDE, DICKSON  (Tina Keene Peddie ←)

UNDERWOOD, Baralba Rolly Bumby (Spain), by 1860, had been deserted by her husband after the birth of the 10th child-in Crawford Co. Ga. She was married in 1834 Monroe Co. Ga. to Reuben Underwood. He was back in Monroe. She later was in Potterville, Taylor, Ga. where she died. (Gerry Hill ←)

WALKER, Margaret -  My gg grandmother, Margaret Walker, probably left New Hanover County soon after 1832, the approximate year she lost her husband, Arthur Walker, and came with her family to Crawford.  She had these children: Hannah, Samuel G, Margaret, Joel L., and Catherine.  Some say she traveled with other families by the names of Croom and Lewis.  New Hanover County is an early North Carolina county. ZEIGLER, William - was born 15 Nov 1799 in Orangeburgh District SC, was on the 1820 census of Edgefield District SC, and migrated to Crawford County GA in 1827 where he lived until he died 11 Jun 1855. (Honey Lanham Dodge ←)
