Obituary of Nettie Crow
"The Bainbridge Post Search Light" dated November 1941.


Mrs. Nettie Crow, 67, died at the home of Mrs. Minnie Cloud Sunday morning, November 16 at 8:00 o'clock from a stroke of paralysis. She is survived by two sons, Merrit Emanuel of this city and Nervin Emanuel of Columbus, Ga. Funeral services were held at the Cool Spring Church with the Rev. E. G. Carter officiating. Interment was made in the Cool Spring Cemetery. The following gentlemen served as active pallbearers: Charles Cloud, George Howell, Boyd WHite, T. J. Strickland, Howard Hoyt, R. Yarn. Funeral Services for Mrs. Louera Cloud King, 78, of Route 2, Bainbridge, were held Sunday afternoon, 29th September at 4 P.M. at the Mount Olive Baptist Church With interment following in the Mount Olive Cemetery. The Rev. Emmett Cloud and the Rev. E. E. O'Neal officiated. Mrs. King died Saturday, September 28th following an illness of several weeks. She was a native and lifelong resident of Decatur County and was a member of the Mount Gilead Freewill Baptist Church. Surviving her is one son Ralph King of Detroit, Michigan; three daughter, Mrs. E. E. Cummerford, Mrs. Noah Cloud, and Mrs. J. A. Douglas, all of Bainbridge and four sisters, Mrs. D.M. Griffin, Mrs. Gussie King, and Mrs. W. T. Cox also of Bainbridge, and Mrs. J. A. Ivey of Donalsonville. Active pallbearers were Albert Griffin; Bernard Cumbie, George Loyless, Garland Loyless, C. J. Bennett and Don Matthews. Ivey Funeral Home had charge of the arrangements.

Funeral services for Mrs. Alta Marie Wood, 70, of Bainbridge will be held today, Feb. 1, at 11 a.m. in the West Bainbridge Baptist Church with Dr. Marvin L. Fowler officiating. Interment will be in Roselawn Memory Gardens with Scott Ingle, Tim Ingle, David Ingle, Buddy Davis, Steve Wacaser, and Larry Harrell serving as pallbearers. Mrs. Wood died Jan. 29 in Thomasville. She was a former resident of Port Angeles, Washinton and had lived in Bainbridge for the past six years. She was a homemaker and member of the West Bainbridge Baptist Church. Survivors include her husband, Clyde L. Wood; a son, Gary Ingle of Bainbridge; a daughter, Janet Martineau of Charleston, S. C.; two sisters, Dona Bauer of Seattle, Wash. and Lola Hutchinson of Port Angeles; six grandchildren and nine great-grnadchildren. Ivey Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Obituary of Thomas M. Perry

Funeral services for Mr. Thomas M. Perry, 80, of Atlanta were held Thursday, Jan. 30, at Spring Hill, Atlanta. Graveside services followed Thursday afternoon in Oak City Cemetery, Bainbridge. Mr. Perry died Jan. 28, 1997. He was retired from the U.S. Postal Service, and was a member of the Druid Hills United Methodist Church. He was preceeded in death by his wife, Hannah Slappey Perry. Survivors include four daughters, Barbara Ferrazzano of Charleston, S. C., Ann Serra of St. Augustine, Fla.. Sarah Oliver of Meansville and Beth Velshuis of Jefferson; a sister, Sarah Edwina Seymour of Charlotte, N. C.; and five grandchildren. In lieu of memorials may be made to Alzheimer Association, 1841 Clifton Rd. N. E., Atlanta, Ga. 30329-4049. H. M. Patterson & Son Funeral Home of Atlanta was in charge funeral arrangements, and Perry Funeral Home of Ashburn was in charge of burial arrangements.

Funeral services for Mrs. Hazel Maples Dean, 71, of Bainbridge were held on Jan. 30 at Cox Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Tim Hicks officiating. Interment was in Oak City Cemetery. Mrs. Dean died Tuesday, Jan. 28, at Bainbridge Health Care after a lengthy illness. She was a native of Miller County and lived most of her life in Bainbridge. She served as a foster parent for 10 years until her retirement in 1991. She was a member of the Church of God. She was preceeded in death by her husband, Sibert Lester Dean. Survivors include two daughters, Sylvia Granthum of Bainbridge and Sara Nell Holley of West Palm Beach, Fla.; one brother, Pete Maples of Clyde, N.Y.; two sisters, Jean Alday of Bainbridge and Betty Layton of Mobile, Ala.; and two grandchildren. Cox Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Funeral services for Mr. John A. Grant, 70, of Colquitt were held Jan. 23 at the Bellview Free Will Baptist Church with the Rev. J. M. Creech officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery with Chad Clenney, Rusty Clenney, Kevin Clenney, Ben Clenney, Donald Brooks and Alan Daniels serving as active pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were Joe Martin, Roger Worsley, Andy Merritt, Don Brown, Ed Brown and Robbie Griffin. Mr. Grant died Jan. 21. He was a native of Decatur County, and was retired from Georgia Pacific. He was owner of Colquitt Alternative and Personal Care Home. He was a member of Bellview Free Will Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Doris Grant; one son, John Bruce Grant of Colquitt; one daughter Susan Long of Colquitt; a brother, Thurman Grant of Coquitt a sister, Margaret Kreeger of Eufaula, Ala.; and six grandchildren. Funeral services for Mr. Archie W. Brewer, Sr. 79 of Colquitt were held Jan. 30 at the Boykin Church of God with the Rev. David Douglas and the Rev. Steve Hardeman officiating. Interement was in Mother's Home Church Cemetery with Rusty Poitevint, Jay Brewer, Rick Cordele, Amy Letson, Lee Haywood and Lewell W. Brewer serving as pallbearers. Mr. Brewer died Jan. 28 in Miller County Hospital. He was native of Telfair County, and was a retired truck driver. He was of the Church of God faith. Survivors include his wife, Hazel Brewer; two daughters, Sandra Calhoun of Colquitt and Carol Mott of Pensacola, Fla.; three sons, Archie W. Brewer, Jr. and Jerry Brewer, both of Bainbridge, and Roy Brewer of Dothan; one brother, Thomas H. Brewer, Jr. of Lumber City; one sister, Naomi Lambert of Lumber City; 15 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Cox Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. King died on March 19 at Emory Hospital in Decatur, after a lengthy illness. Born in Decatur County on March 13, 1908, she had lived her entire life in Bainbridge and Decatur County. She was a member of the West Bainbridge Baptist Church and of the Ladies Auxiliary of V. F. W. Phillips Post 4904. Survivors include her husband, James Benjamin King of Bainbridge; one daughter, Mrs. Jimmy Bennett of Attapulgus; four sons; Benny W. King of Bainbridge, Sam King of Ponca City, Oklahoma, William David King of Bainbridge and Leonard E. King of Warner Robbins; sixteen grandchildren, two sisters, Mrs. J. A. Granthum of Bainbridge and Mrs. Henry Hartzog of Bainbridge; one brother Charlie M. Cloud of Bainbridge.

Mr. J. Ben King dies Mon. after long illness. Funeral services for James Benjamin King, 70, of 1307 Mayo Drive, West Bainbridge, were conducted Wednesday, April 26, at 3:00 P.M. from West Bainbridge Baptist Church with Rev. Carl Culpepper and Mr. Carl L. Culpepper officiating. Interment was in Bethany Cemetery. Mr. King died on April 24, at Memorial Hospital in Bainbridge after a lengthy illness. Born in Reynoldsville, GA on April 5, 1902, he had lived his lifetime in Decatur County. He was a member of the West Bainbridge Baptist Church and was a carpenter for BFM Construction Company in Bainbridge until his retirement in 1962. His wife was the late Henrietta Cloud King. Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Jimmy Bennett of Attapulgus; four sons Benny W. King of Bainbridge, Sam King of Ponca City, Oklahoma, Leonard E. King of Warner Robbins and William David King of Bainbridge; sixteen grandchildren; his step-mother, Mrs. Altha Chandler of Donalsonville; three sisters, Mrs. Truman Clayton of Reynoldsville, Mrs. L. E. Gay of Bainbridge, and Mrs. Roscoe Warren of Chattahoochee; three brothers, Horace King of Brinson, C. E. King of Bainbridge And Jamie King of Donalsonville. Grave side funeral services for Mrs. Ida Mae Jackson Earnest, 83, of Monticello, Fla. where held May 26 at the family plot in Cool Springs Cemetery with Minister Bruce Quiggle officiating. Mrs. Earnest died May 23 in Brynwood Nursing Home Monticello, after a lengthy illness. A native of Seminole County, she had lived in Monticello for the past 20 years. Prior to that time she lived in Bainbridge and was a long-time employee of Williamson-Dickie Manufacturing Company. She attended the First Christain Church of Bainbridge. Survivors include three sons, Carlton E. Earnest of Bainbridge, Winston Earnest of Monticello and James E. Earnest of Satellite Beach, Fla of Satellite Beach, Fla; 11 grandchildren and other relatives. Cox Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Funeral services for Grover E. "Gus" Nix, 72, of Bainbridge, were Tuesday, December 23, at Ivey Funeral Home Chapel. Dr. Leroy C.Spinks and Rev. Danny Shepard officiated. Interment was in Calvary Assembly of God Church Cemetery in Decatur County. Pallbearers were Calvin Fleming, Owen Elkins, Jr., Ted Martin, Morris Denman, Carroll Moye and Todd Martin. Mr. Nix died Sunday, December 21, in Bainbridge Memorial Hospital. Born in Seminole County, he was the son of the late Levi and Mattie Verena Earnest Nix. He served in the U. S. Marine Corps during World War II. He was employed by Minute Maid, Inc., Coca-Cola Food Division, in plant maintenance. He was a member of VFW Post 4904, American Legion Post 62, Order of the Eastern Star # 62, Tavares Lodge # 234 F& AM, and Bainbridge First Baptist Church. Survivors include his daughter, Vernea Nix of Blountstown, Fla; three sisters, Edna N. Martin and Elsie N. Elkins, both of Bainbridge, and Dorothy N. Fleming of Attapulgus; and one grandson. Funeral services for SFC (Ret) John Aaron Zimmerman, Jr., 71, of Columbus were held Friday, Jan. 31, at Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, Macon Road Chapel, with the Rev. Tommy Greene officiating. Mr. Zimmerman died Jan. 29 at the Columbus Medical Center. He was a native of New Rochelle, N.Y. He retired from the U.S. Army after 24 years of service, and went on to retire from civil service, having worked in the office of the Inspector General at Fort Benning. He was a member of the American Legion, B.P.O.E. and the V.F.W. Survivors include his wife, Mary Zimmerman; one son, Roy Zimmerman of Bainbridge; one daughter, Susan L. Swartz of Salem, Ala.; a brother, Robert Zimmerman of Englewood, N.J.; three sisters, Lillian Santoro of New Rochelle, N.Y., Ethel Mohr of Houston, Tex. and Doris Barnett of Californial four grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Obituary of Reuben M. Lee Cloud

Friends in the country were grieved to learn of the death of Mr. Lee Cloud, who died last Thursday night at his home, Brinson, R. F. D., following a long illness. Funeral services were held at Bethany church Friday afternoon with the Rev. E. G. Carter, pastor of the Calvary Baptist Church, officiating. Mr. Cloud, who was 75 years old at the time of his death was born in Decatur County, May 19, 1866. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Doshia Cloud and six children, Mrs. J. A. Granthum, Mrs. H. J. Smith, Mrs. B. W. Broxton, Mrs. Ben King, Charlie and Roddie Cloud. Twenty-nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, all residing in Decatur County. Active pallbearers were his grandsons: T. C. and A. J. Granthum, B. F. Humphrey, Charlie Cloud, Jr., Warren Cloud and Ben King. Mr. Cloud was a successful farmer in Decatur County all of his life. To many friends he has supplied a well known fishing resort known as "Cloud's Landing" on the Spring Creek. Player Funeral Home in charge. (Reuben M. Lee Cloud was born 19 May 1866 and died 13 November 1941. He is buried at Bethany Baptist Church Cemetery.)

Funeral Services for Mrs. Mary Lou Cloud
Funeral services were held at 2 o'clock Saturday evening at MT. Olive Church for Mrs. Mary Loud Cloud, age 85, who died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Minnie Loyless, Friday night, October 14, at 9;30 o'clock after a long illness. Mrs. Cloud was born September 5, 1853 in Burke County, Georgia. In her young days she moved to Pike County, Alabama and lived there for several years. After moving to Bainbridge she was married to Mr. William Cloud of this place, who preceded her in death 44 years. She lived a Christian life everyday and was a faithful and devoted mother; grandmother, and great grandmother. She is survived by eight children, Mrs. Minnie Loyless, Mrs. Era King, Mrs. Ethel Cox and Mrs. Gussie King of Bainbridge, Ga., Mrs. Willie Ivey of Donalsonville, Ga., and Mrs. Sophie Griffin of Iron City, Ga., Messer. Henry and Grady Cloud both of Bainbridge, Ga., also 38 grandchildren, and 51 great grandchildren, and a host of friends who mourn her death.
"Week not, dear ones, she's gone to rest.
To a home beyond the skies:
Where God has called her to live with him,
Beyond the by and by."
Funeral services were held with Rev. O'Neal, Rev. Merritt, and rev. Dewey Haire of Bainbridge officiating. Interment took place in MT. Olive Cemetery. Those serving as pallbearers were six of the grandsons: John, Grady and W. C. Ivey, Jimmie Loyless, Tommie Cloud and Charlie Griffin. Players Funeral Home in charge.

Friends of Mrs. Emma Pope were saddened to learn of her death which ocurred at her home on West Street Thursday afternoon, May 17, [1951], after a lengthy illness. Surviving are three sons, Robert A. Pope and Barney E. Pope of Bainbridge, Jesse L. Pope of Climax; two brothrs, R. A. Kirkland of Thomasville and Alex Kirkland of Ft. Myers, Fla.; five sisters, Mrs. Annie Daughtry of Climax, Mrs. Mellie Horton of Cairo, Mrs. Bessie Donalson of Albany, Mrs. Dollie Johnson of Columbus and Mrs. Della Poppell of Quincy; ten grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. The funeral service was held Friday afternoon, May 18, from Pine Level Church in Grady County, with the Reverent Charles Bishop officiating. Active pallbearers were G. D. Phillips, W. C. Cooper, Jr., W. C. Cooper, G. W. Holt, E. L. Clemmons and B. E. Glover. Interment was made in Pine Level Cemetery with E. W. Cox and Sons in charge.

Mrs. Bazzell died Nov. 20 at Bowerland Personal Care Home. Mrs. Bazzell was born in Meigs on March 9, 1904. She was a homemaker and resided in Bainbridge for the past 66 years. She was a member of First Baptist Church and a "Gold Star Mother" of World War II. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Harrison Bazzell. Survivors include two daughters, Colleen B. Morris of Bainbridge and Wyleen B. Charles of Hampton, Va.; and a brother, Stanley Kain of Ocala, Fla.; four grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Funeral services were held for Miss Annie Mock, 42, of Bainbridge Monday. Miss Mock, a lifetime reisdent of Bainbridge, died after a very short illness. Graveside services and interment were held at the Mock Family Cemetery in Decatur County. Rev. Roy McTier and Rev. Dick Osteen officiated. Survivors include three brothers: Mr. Claude Mock of Columbus; Mr. Todd Mock and Mrs. R. S. Mock of Rt. 3 Bainbridge. She is also survived by six nieces and nephews. Active pallbearers were C. L. Mr. Benjamin Franklin Mock, 79, died at his home near Bainbridge, Wednesday, July 3, after an illness of several weeks. He is survived by three daughters, Mr. Pearler Taylor of Quincy, Fla., Mrs. Emma Barwick and Mrs. Sallie Yates of Brinson; sons, Harmon Mock of Bainbridge, W. H. Mock of Lake Wales, Fla., R. L. Mock of Bartow, Fla., and T. B. Mock of Quitman, Ga., one brother, Solomon Mock of Bainbridge. Funeral services were held from the residence Friday, July 5, at 2:00 o'clock with the Rev. Harry Wells officiating. Mr. Mock had been a member of the Bainbridge Masonic Lodge for the past twenty-five years and the Masonic Lodge acted as pallbearers and had charge of the services at the grave. Funeral Services for R. S. Mock, Sr. [7-07-1951]
Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at four o'clock at the Mock Cemetery for Mr. Solomon Mock, Sr. who died Saturday, July 7, after an illness of several weeks. Mr. Mock was born in Decatur County eighty-two years ago and spent his entire life in this community where he was engaged in farming for many years. For ovr fifty years he was a steward in the Methodist Church, and for the same length of time was a Master Mason. He is survived by three sons and one daughter: Ted Mock, R. S. Mock, Jr. and Miss Annie Mock, all of Route 3, Bainbridge and Claude Mock of Columbus, Georgia. Graveside services were conducted by the Reverend C. H. Fort, with the Masonic commital service by the members of Orion Lodge No. 8. Active pallbearers were E. M. Rich, Rufus Drinkwater, Austin Phillips, E. R. Young, A. E. White and Cecil Mills. Honorary pallbearers were members of Orion Lodge No. 8. Ivey Funeral Home was in charge.

Yates, Augusta and Sylvester Yates, Donalsonville; four sisters, Mrs. Roberta Gardner and Mrs. Chelma Gardner, Bainbridge, Mrs. Lina Strikland, Iron City and Mrs. K. D. Comings, Valdosta; and three grand children. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Lee Wilson and Rev. Dwayne Holcombe. Interment was in Brinson Cemetery with Ivey Funeral Home directing. Active pallbearers were Cecil Jones, C. W. Godby, C. L. Earnest, R. G. Heard, DeWitt Ingram and Al Phillips. Serving as honorary pallbearers were Kenneth Hodges, J. R. Deese, A. E. White Jr., Sherwood Duncan, J. B. Long, R. S. Mock, Cecil Griffin, E. H. Adams and James E. Brooks.

Mrs. M. L. Yates Dies [5-26-1936]
Funeral services were held for Mrs. Louisiana Missouria Yates, on Thursday, May 28, at 11:00 A.M. at Bethany Church with Rev. Dan McAlphin of Sneads, Fla., conducting the services. Interment followed at Bethany Cemetery. Mrs. Yates died Wednesday, May 27, at her home near Bainbridge. She was 86 years of age at the time of her death. She is survived by four daughters, Mesdames Della Wimberley, J. F. Griffin, Florius Wimberley and Bell Reynolds of Donalsonville; two sons, Arnold and Colin Yates of Quincy, Fla. She is also survived by forty seven grandchildren and forty four great grand children. Active pallbearers were Messrs. Jimmie Taylor, Lamar Butler, Maston Griffin, Wilbert Griffin, J. C. Barber, Gordon Griffin and Jimmie Griffin. Player Funeral Home in charge.

Mrs. Stella Kennedy Mock, 70, died suddenly on February 9, 1977. Funeral services were at 2:30 p.m. February 11, from Calvary Baptist Church. Burial followed in Rose Lawn Memory Gardens with Dr. Charles Bishop officiating. A native of Jackson County, Florida, she had lived here for 60 years. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. Survivors include her sons: George Mock and Joe Mock of Bainbridge; Frank Mock of Eustis, Florida; and Harmon Buford Mock of Kinston Springs, Tennessee; two brothers Buddy Kennedy of Quincy and Lee Kennedy of Bainbridge; two sisters; Mrs. Thelma Ezell of Bainbridge and Mrs. Christine Finefrock of Tampa; and 11 grandchildren. Active pallbearers were the members of the Board of Deacons of Calvary Baptist Church. Ivey Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Obituary of Louise H. Hodges

September 2, 1914 - July 30, 1995
Funeral services for Mrs. Louise Humphrey Cloud Hodges, 80, of Bainbridge will be held today, August 2, at 2 p. m. in the First United Methodist Church with the Reverend David Blalock officiating. Interment will be in Oak City Cemetery with Daniel Humphrey, James Humphrey, Wallace Pope, Keith Newberry, Hubert Moore, Joe Cook and Max Bryant serving as pallbearers. Mrs. Hodges died July 30 at Bainbridge Health Care following a lengthy illness. She was a lifetime resident of Decatur County and a retired elementary school teacher in the Decatur County school system. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Zaidee Slappey Sunday School Class. She was also a member of the Retired Teachers Association. She was preceded in death by two husbands, Hoke Cloud and S. L. Hodges. Survivors include one son, Bobby G. Cloud of Opelika, ALA; a daughter Memorie C. Halstead of Holland, Michigan; two sisters, Grace Brock of Bainbridge and Clyde Ketelboeter of St. Mary's; fours grandchildren and one great-grandchild. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 300 W. Shotwell St., Bainbridge, GA 31717. Ivey Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. 246-3232.
