Contents: Part Two--Descendents of Daniel Elliott Rich Part Three--Ancestors of Daniel Elliott Rich Part Four--Another Stephen Rich of Appling County GA
By the time Emanuel County GA was formed in 1812 members of this Rich family had already established homesteads in the area. The Hall Cemetery near Modoc is believed to have been the family burial ground. The old section near the main gate has dozens of graves which are unmarked and probably date to the first half of the 19th century. Early county records show a number of apparent family members. A few remained; others moved on. Some are known to have settled in Decatur County GA. Daniel Elliott Rich was a pioneer resident of Emanuel County and established a homeplace near present day Modoc. Many of his children and their descendents remained in the county and intermarried with other local families. A large number of them are documented in the following pages.
PART ONE--DANIEL ELLIOTT RICH
Daniel Elliot Rich was born about 1796 in Georgia, according to the Census. Just prior to 1820 he married Eunicy Johns, who was born about the same time as Daniel and died before 1870. A post-1900 entry in a family Bible lists Enoch Johns as her father. During his lifetime, Daniel Rich acquired considerable acreage along the tributarys of the Canoochee River near Modoc. His homeplace is believed to have been the log cabin which remained well into the 1950s on Erlich place across from David Rotans house on Erlich Road. According to the 1850 to 1880 Census', Daniel Rich's occupation was listed respectively as mechanic, blacksmith, works farm and farming. Daniel Rich died in 1888 in Emanuel County GA. An inventory of his estate is filed in Emanuel County. Henry H. Hall (his son-in-law) served as administrator. This couple are buried beside each other in the Hall Cemetery near Modoc (Emanuel) GA. The gravestones are barely legible but the names can be read. Children of Daniel Elliot Rich and Eunicy Johns: 01 Joseph A. "Joab" Rich, born 25 August 1822 02 Martha Rich, born 1830 03 Sarah Rich, born 24 July 1827 04 Demaris Rich, born 20 May 1829 05 Stephen Emanuel Rich, born 29 Sep 1831 06 Elizabeth Rich, born 1834 07 William J. PART THREE: ANCESTORS OF DANIEL E. RICH Stephen Rich: Geri Bloodsworth of Lake Butler FL provided pages from a family Bible published after 1900 which lists Daniel Rich's father as Stephen Rich and his mother as Abriay. In the Mortality Census of 1850, Abiah Rich of Emanuel County GA is listed as having died in September 1849. She was a 90-year-old widow and had been born in England. Stephen Rich last appeared in the 1830 Census of Emanuel County so apparently he died before 1840. According to Dorsey's FOOTPRINTS ALONG THE HOOPIE (1979)...When Emanuel County was created in 1812, court sessions and elections were to be held at the house of Stephen Rich until a court house site could be located and constructed. The court house was to be located on a hill approximately three miles from the home of Stephen Rich. In the "Early Tax Lists Of Georgia" for 1806 in Montgomery County (parent of Emanuel County) Stephen Rich is shown with 30 acres of pineland and paying one poll.
Shadrack Rich: In the 1790 Census of Edgefield County SC the following family is recorded: Shadracke Rich, 2 males age 16+, 7 males age <16, 4 females, no slaves. While there is no proof that the Shadracke Rich of SC and the Shadrack Reach/Shadrick Rich of GA are the same, "time and place" suggest that they are. This Shadracke Rich does not appear again in the South Carolina Census but by 1802 that name is recorded in the public records of Montgomery (parent of Emanuel) and Jefferson Counties in Georgia. "Headright and Bounty Grants 1756-1909" shows Shadrack Reach received land in Montgomery County in 1802 and 1811. In the "Early Tax Lists Of Georgia" for 1806 in Montgomery County (parent of Emanuel County) the following persons appear: Shadreich Rich - 400 A pineland - 1 poll; Stephen Rich - 30 A pineland - 1 poll. This latter entry suggests a father/son link between Shadrack and Stephen Rich. "Index to Georgia Tax Digests, Volume 3, 1804 - 1806" lists Shadrick Rich as a tax payer in Jefferson County 1805. Shadrack Rich either died or moved before the 1820 Census, so very little is known about him after the early 1800s. But of his origins a bit more has emerged. The following abstracts suggest that the Shadrack Rich of Montgomery County GA is the same as the Shadrack Reach named in Wake County NC records: Divison of the property of Timothy Reach Nov. 1806 plot #1 John Reach and Heirs plot #2 Solomon George in rights of his wife Sally plot #3 Zachariah Reach and Heirs plot #4 Shadrack Reach and Heirs plot #5 Benjamin Hobson in right of his wife Clary plot #6 Richard Colbert in right of his wife Zydah plot #7 Henry Townsley in right of his wife (Agnes, but not named) From the book "MARRIAGES OF GRANVILLE COUNTY NC, 1753 - 1868, p328": Henry Townley and Agness Rich 19 September 1776; Shadrach Rich, bondsman; Jesse Newly, witness.
"Abstracts of vital records from Raliegh NC newspapers 1799-189 Vol 1": Reaich: D. Caution regarding power of attorney given by Shadrack Reaich, living in the state of GA., son of the late Timothy Reaich, of Wake Co. NC. Sept 5. Solomon X George. R.R. [code for a newspaper] mon 29 Sept 1806 3:3 [Note: Solomon George was the husband of Sally Rich, sister of Shadrack].
TIMOTHY REACH: Timothy Reach, father of Shadrack Rich of Georgia, died in Wake County NC prior to November 1806. His heirs were listed as John Reach; Sally Reach, wife of Solomon George; Zachariah Reach; Shadrack Reach (of the State of Georgia, in 1806); Clary Reach, wife of Benjamin Hobson; Zydah Reach, wife of Richard Colbert; Agnes Reach, wife of Henry Townsley.
Timothy Reach appears to be the same as the person named as brother to Jeremiah Reach who died in Wake County NC just before 17 January 1782. In Abstract of Records of Will 1771-1802 Wake Co. NC, Book A: Reach, Jeremiah; Will recorded 17 Jan 1782; page 174, heirs are named as son, John Rich; son, William Rich; dau, Susannah Rich, wife of James Bridges; son, Jacob Rich; dau, Judy Rich, wife of William Dodd; (torn) Charity Rich; wife, Mary; son, Charles Rich. Executors: brother Timothy Rich; son Charles Rich. A record in Goochland County VA suggests this Wake County NC family might have originated there. The Goochland County VA Deed Book 3, 1737-1742, page 171 gives a settlement of property of Timothy Rich deceased and names as Administratrix, Catherine, wife of Timothy Vanzantran, widow of Timothy Rich, deceased. By vertue of an order of Goochland county Court made the 18 day of July 1738. List of children: Jeremiah Parker Rich; Timothy Rich; Sarah Rich; William Rich; Nimrod Rich; Catherin Rich. And Catherine, his wife was pregant(sic) with David Rich at the time of his decease. Court held Goochland Coounty Feb 20 1738.
