July 05, 1829, LWT PG 24-25 EMANUAL BOOK A 1815-68

Of Irish Lineage......migratated to Roberson County,North Carolina and came to Georgia and one of the first settlers of Emanuel County.

Ephriam Herrington, served in the Continental Forces and was present at Cornwallis's surrender at Yorktown.

You Can Almost Hear The Stagecoaches By Mrs. Irene Frances Herrington Ellis    August 1980

Nestled near the serenely beautiful Ohoopee at Nunez is a quite residence that has seen a lot of history. Currently owned by Frank Herrington, It was once the home site if the Revolutionary War soldier.   Ephriam Herrington, a North Carolina native, served in the Continental forces and was present at Cornwallis surrender at Yorktown. He later settled in Emanuel County near present day Nunez at a

one thousand acre plantation called "VineLand". The orignal land grant has been in the Herrington

family since the late 1700's.

Ephriam's son James, has been a unique claim to fame. Nine of his twelve sons served in the Civil War. Three were killed and six returned home. Very few familes can claim such total participation in the Confederate cause.

Running through the center of the property was the Old Dublin-Savannah Road. Stage coaches use to regularly pass by the old log house that use to face it. Today a portion of the road passes near the family cemetary.

The house that stands today was built over sixty years ago. Two log dwellings preceded it. The current owner,Frank Herrington is presently restoring the house.

Another decendent of the orignal owner, Alfred Herrington ,Sr. was a former owner of the Swainsboro

Pine Forest. a predecessor of the Forest Blade. According to documents in the State Archives, he was once the Captain of the "Steamboat Daisy" which carried timber down the Altamaha to Darien also known as " Commadore Of The Ohoopee", he is said to be the first man, to navigate a boat up the Ohoopee.

While visiting the secluded home site. You could almost see the rickety stagecoaches plodding along their journey to Savannah. A few moments in the well kept Cemetary call up images of soldiers going off to war in defense of liberty. Such images serve as an appropriate link between Emanuel County and America's eventful past.

It is said Ephriam was also called * Joe *

Nine of James and Dicy's sons served in the Civil War.  The bodies of two of them were returned from the battlefield and buried in the Herrington Family Cemetery about two miles SW of Nunez, Georgia in Emanuel County.  Riley and John joined Company A, 54th Regiment, CSA; Manning enlisted in Miller's Rangers, 7th Calvery; James and Drury signed up with Company C, 38th Regiment, CSA; Ephriam and Arthur became members of Company H, 48th Regiment; and Thomas and Lott enlisted in other units of the Confederate forces. James was killed at Winchester, Virginia; Manning was killed and Lott was killed. Riley was captured at Kennesaw Mountain in June 1864 and was not released until March 1865.

Note:  Another story about the family said 10 sons served in the war, but this is discounted because, in a newspaper article in 1925, Roan Herrington is quoted as saying that  nine brothers fought in the war.

An article in the Bulloch Times dated June 10, 1897 stated that Manning and Arthur were Privates in The 7th Calvery, Company B, Miller's Rangers.

Not A Time For Son's

The war between the States proved a tragic experience for almost every Emanuel Countian perhaps James Herrington and his wife Dicy suffered most of all They  sent nine sons off the fight the Yankees and never saw one of them again and the bodies of two others was returned home from the battlefield for burial in the Herrington Family Cemetery.

Son of Ephriam Herrington, American Revolutionary soldier who was with Washington when Cornwallis surrendered at Yorktown, James had lived all his life on the Herrington plantation near Nunez, on ground still in possession of the Herrington family. James had married Dicy Moore and she had given him twelve sons, by the time the southern forces fired on " Fort Sumter" to hurl the nation into civil war.  Three of the sons were to young to fight, but the other nine soon enlisted.

Riley and John, joined Company A,54th,CSA,Manning enlisted in "Miller's Ranger's" 7th Calvary James and Drury signed up with Company C, 38th Regiment, Ephriam and Arthur became members of  Co H, 48th Regiment, and Thomas and Lott enlisted in other units of the Confederate forces.

James was killed at Winchester,Virginia on June 13,1863 . Manning was killed September 11,1864 six years after the birth of his son, Alfred Herrington,Sr . events surrounding death of Lott were not available.  But the heartaches of James and Dicy Herrington does not end there. A fourth son, Riley was captured at Kennesaw Mountain June 19,1864. He was not released from prison until March 10,1865. The war between the states were not a good time for rearing sons.

Cause of Death: Peritonitis

Herrington, Aaron C.     02/09/1905     Aaron C. Herrington, a prominent merchant living at Blum, about 9 miles form here, was found in the woods with his brains shot out yesterday evening.  Mr. Herrington left home early yesterday morning with his gun, presumably to go hunting.  He went to a Mr. Snipes, who is one of his neighbors.  He asked Mr. Snipes is he wanted to walk with him over to the post office, and Mr. Snipes decided not to go.  Mr. Herrington had only been gone a few minutes when a gun was heard to fire, but nothing was though of it, as they allowed he had shot a bird.

Late in the evening, Mr. Snipes noticed some buzzards off in the woods, and went down to see what they were after.  Then it was that Mr. Herrington was found with his brains shot out.

Mr. Herrington had dealt considerably in cotton, loosing considerable lately and had been complaining about his debts.

It is the general opinion of his neighbors that he took his own life and the cause was business depression.

He was a middle aged man, well known in Emanuel county and leaves a wife, but no children.
