Emanuel County was created on Dec. 10, 1812 by an act of the General Assembly (Ga. Laws 1812, p. 82). Georgia's 39th county was formed from portions of Bulloch and Montgomery counties. Subsequently, portions of Emanuel County were used to create the following counties: Johnson (1858), Jenkins and Toombs (1905), Candler (1914), and Treutlen (1918). Emanuel County was named for former Georgia governor, David Emanuel (1744-1810).  One note of interest that you should know in your research is that the Emanuel County courthouse has been destroyed by fire fives times: 1841, 1855, 1857, 1919, and 1938.  You may like to see a picture of the courthouse as it looked in the early 1900’s. View the current Emanuel County Courthouse. Visit other Georgia County Courthouses.

Counties bordering Emanuel are Bulloch, Burke, Candler, Jefferson, Jenkins, Johnson, Laurens, Montgomery, Tatnall, Toombs and Truetlen. View a list of all Georgia counties.
