Phillips My mother was Myrtle Pauline Carroll My grandfather was Roderick Wallace Carroll My great grandfather was Thomas M. Carroll There was talk among Carroll family researchers about the existence of a photo of Dr, Carroll's family standing in from of their hotel in Waco, "The Commercial Hotel". To many of us it became known as "the old hotel photo." It surfaced several years ago in cousins attic in an old suitcase from her fathers estate. Several of us met at cousin Betty Jo Carroll Parsons house in Bowden, Georgia: Rudy & Betty Jo (Carroll) Parsons; Joseph & Charlene Kruse (who found the original photo) of Marietta, GA; Stanley Neal Carroll (Betty Jo's brother) of Huntsville; and myself. In the photo was our common great grandfather Dr. Thomas; Stanley and Betty Jo's grandfather James Moses Blackburn Carroll and his family; and and Charlene and my grandfather Roderick Wallace Carroll and his family; and Oscar Bruce Carroll and his family. Oscar was Roderick's twin brother, and in spite of recently losing a child, my grandmother Josephine Rebecca Hamrick Carroll was still able to smile - though it is a bit of a Mona Lisa smile. Based on the ages of all the children, we collectively dated the photo at 1898.
Though she did not know the exact date, Betty Jo said some time after the hotel was sold it was turned into apartments, and then was destroyed in 1972 when a truck loaded with dynamite exploded on Highway 27 near Waco. We have shared this photo with many descendants of Dr. Thomas and Isabella (McAllister) Carroll, but I think sharing it with you will possibly insure access to it to other descendants or future genealogists.
Thank you for your continuing efforts to preserve history for future generations.
