MADDOX - SAMUEL AND MATTHEW M.

On your county's online site I have seen a record that could be about some of my ancestors. I would like to ask if you know where I could find this record in its entirety and how I could go about getting a copy.

On the USGenweb site that lists the Monroe County wills and other court records, it shows the following under misc. court records:

Page 42. It appearing to the Court that the security of William Bowden, guardian of Hamit G. Maddon and Labetta F. Maddon has become insolvent.
It is therefore ordered by the Court said William Bowden be and appear at the next regular term of this Court on the first Monday in March to show cause, if any
he has, why he should not give other a good security as guardian of aforesaid or be dismissed from his guardianship.

I am a descendant of Samuel Maddox through his son, Matthew M. Maddox. We are currently trying to see how Matthew's wife, Martha Rebecca Bowden/Bowdoin is related to the William Bowden/Bowdoin family. When the Maddox family migrated into Coffee County, Alabama, many of the Bowden family that are descendants of William J. Bowden also migrated to the same area. I believe this court record could pertain to both members of the Bowden and Maddox families. I have found several transcribed letters, etc. through the years where the name Maddox is sometimes misspelled as Maddon. I also wonder is "Hamit" could have been "Hamp" Maddox. This could be a clue to linking Martha Rebecca Bowden to her parents or relatives.

Also, I am searching for any Bowden/Bowdoin/Maddox wills or estates filed in Monroe County during the period from 1850 to 1900. Could you also let me know who or where I need to contact to search for this? I am located in Mississippi and another researcher I am corresponding with is located in Tennessee. We are currently trying to link Matthew Maddox's wife, Martha Rebecca Bowden, to her parents. Born in North Carolina about 1816, Martha Rebecca moved to the Monroe County area of Georgia. She married Matthew M. Maddox in Monroe County on Dec. 24, 1835 and lived in that area for several years. She is shown in 1840 in Monroe County and in 1850 on the Stewart County Federal census. In the mid 1850's Matthew moved his family to Coffee County, Alabama, where they remained until their deaths.

Lastly, did the courts in Monroe County keep detailed transcripts of court proceedings in the 1840's? Matthew Maddox's father, Samuel Maddox Jr. had been tried in the Monroe County Superior Court twice, first in 1831 and again about 1840. While I have very good details about the proceedings, I would like to see if I can obtain a copy of the the trial records.

Liz Robertson sent me your email. For many years I answered queries received by the local legal offices pertaining to genealogical requests. I kept a file on the requests and information found. I find a copy of information pertaining to a Samuel Maddox rape trial in 1831 involving Miss Nancy J,. Maddox and her uncle, Samuel Maddox. Also a record of the trial of Samuel Maddox - Assault with intent to murder in which Matthew Maddox and his wife (she is not named) are mentioned frequently. Matthew Maddox is begged not to kill Samuel Maddox. Reference is made to an old lady who was evidently killed.

In 1991 I corresponded with Robert L. Maddox in Gonzales, Texas who has done a lot of Maddox research. I do not know that his address is still correct but this is what I have:

The will of John Lawrence Selby is recorded in Monroe County, Ga. along with
an extensive listing of inventory. I copied the will but did not copy the
lengthy inventory list. Evidently he died in Dooly County, Ga. for the will
lists him as being of the County of Dooly and State of Georgia. He may have lived
in Monroe County prior to his Dooly County residence. His wife, Mary Ann and
son, William Alexander Shelby are listed. Also brother-in-law and friend
Alexander Russell of Monroe County is named as executor. The will is dated May
8, 1837, proved May 15, 1837 and recorded May 17, 1837. If this is of interest
to anyone I will be glad for a contact.

I found the following in an 1873 issue of the local paper, The Monroe Advertiser. I have corresponded by email with someone who is related to this H. G. Bean but I have lost the address. Maybe if the item is put on the internet he will see it and get the information. I will be glad to send a copy of the article if I have an address. H. G. Capt. H. G. Bean - This gentleman has been in a low state of health for several years. we are rejoiced, however, to learn that his health is improving since his return from New York. We understand that Capt. Bean intends returning to New York in a few days for the purpose of placing himself under the treatment of Prof. Austin Flint of Bellevue Medical College, who is an eminent practitioner, and who has advised Capt. Bean that his health can be restored.

Hello-

My husband's ancestor, Chesley Davis, was born in GA around 1804/1817 (the
older he gets, the early his birth year becomes). One of his sons was named
John Tollivar Davis. Does anyone have information on the Tolover Davis found
the Monroe Co., GA Pensioners Census. I have not been able to find information
on Chesley's parents and the Tollivar/Tolover caught my eye.

Another of Chesley's sons, Green Jackson Davis, states on a surgeon's cert
from the War in 1863 that he was born in Monroe Co., GA 25 years earlier (ca
1838).

Chesley is found in the 1850 Census of Heard Co., GA and the 1860 & 1870
census of Randolph Co., AL. He lists himself as "Chesley Davis of Randolph Co.,
AL" on BLM documents from 15 Jul 1854 & 1 Feb 1860.

1829 divorce record, which had no grounds listed. I also found John Perkins' will, which names his daughter as Elizabeth Bryan in the body and Elizabeth Jones in the codicil.
