MONROE ADVERTISER, MAY 7, 1897. Newspaper Article "AN
OLD FIND". An Old Bible and Newspaper Unearthed. " Last Monday, in
cleaning up around the depot, Dr. Heidt ran across an old bible the date of
which is uncertain, owing to the title page being gone, but there is a
family record of Jesse D. Brown who, was married to his wife, Mariah, in
1820, and various other records of marriages that occurred in the Brown
family up until 1854. The record of Jesse D. Brown is complete,
showing that he was born on the 18th day of January 1796, married on the 9th
of March, 1820, and died April 20, 1860. There are various other
entries in the bible of marriages and births in the Brown, Morgan, and Wise
families, all being directly connected with the original Jesse D. Brown and
wife. The last birth entry is Thomas Clinton Wise, who was born August
10, 1864. It is not known who this old bible belongs to or how it came
to be stored away in the depot.
Another old find that was made among this same old rubbish on
Monday was a newspaper, "The Weekly Day Book" publised in New York and dated
May 18, 1861. It espoused the Southern cause and says, "the efforts in
the north to crush us has failed." There is only one big flash head
and that reads: "The Civil War. Outbreak in Missouri. 800 troops
captured by U. S. Troops. Mails in Mississippi stopped. Occupation of
Baltimore. Gen Butler's Proclamation."
These two old relics are very interesting and the paper
especially contains much that is not recorded in any history and makes very
lively reading. The "Day Book" scoffs at the idea of the south not
beibng able to win and says: "It would seem that all the officers of the U.
S. Navy who have distinguished themselves in late years are now in the
service of the southern states." (Note: The transcriber
does not know what happened to these two items. )
