Culloden City Cemetery by: Lewis Andrews
LAndrewssr@aol.com
Founded by William Culloden in 1823
Updated: Feb 2001 By: L. Andrews
This cemetery is located in the heart of Culloden, Georgia and is directly behind
the United Methodist Church on Church Street. At
the entrance to the cemetery there is a plaque that reads: BATTLE OF CULLODEN
On April 19, 1865 a part of Wilson's Federal Raiders moving toward Macon
encountered the Worrill Grays near this spot. The
Group numbering less than 200 men, fought a magnificient battle, greatly
outnumbered after a two hour battle they finally yielded
to the superior force leaving their dead and wounded in Federal hands. So fierce
was the fighting that the two men in the 17th
Indiana (Mounted) Infantry unit who captured the flag of the fighting unit were
awarded medals of Honor by the United States
Government.
This inventory was taken starting at the main gate in the North East corner of
the cemetery. Rows running east and west to the
1st street in the interior of the cemetery. After this section the rows were
inventoried from south to north by rows. I have
arranged those buried in each lot with a separator line to show some relation.

The Cullen Thornton Cemetery
Located off Johnstonville Road, about .7 mile down log road. Across from
Tingle's store.
This cemetery has been practically destroyed by a logging company. The photos
were taken by Timothy T. Turner and submitted for inclusion on the Monroe County
Web page. Mary Dumas Smith was descended from Cullen Thornton. She
told Mr. Turner that Cullen Thornton and his wife,
Mary (Polly) Banks Thornton are buried there.
Mr. Turner also located another abandoned cemetery on Johnstonville Rd., back
in the woods off a log road. About 100 yards from the cemetery is an old
home place.
It is unknown as to who is buried there.

Hencely Family Cemetery - By Larry Childs
This cemetery is located on State Highway 18. Coming from the intersection
of State routes 87 and 18 towards Forsyth
it is about two miles on the left side of the road. It is about 200 yards into
the woods and not visible from the road.
You can find the little logging type road with out much trouble. Once you enter
the road there is a power line and
after crossing the right away the cemetery is located about 100 feet into the
woods and is visible at the edge of the
wood line.
A special thank you goes out to Lewis Hencely for showing us this cemetery and
assisting in making these record available
for you to enjoy.

agreeing to the removal and relocation of these graves.

.Numbered granite markers at the head of the plots so that it would be possible
to identify where each grave had been at its original location.
Plant Scherer Cemetery I:
This cemetery, which is located on property formerly owned by the Zellner family,
contains eight smaller cemeteries relocated from the project site. In most cases
the orientation of the new site is identical to the original.A few of the
cemeteries, however, were reconstructed in a more orderly fashion than the
original site.
Any differences between the original site and the relocated graves is noted in
the following description of the graves.
The entire relocation tract covers an area of 3.11 acres. There is a chain-link
fence surrounding the entire site and one running through the middle of the tract
separating some of the cemeteries the following from others.
Plant Scherer Cemetery is the name of the relocation area those cemeteries were
moved to. Plant Scherer is a Georgia
Power electrical generating plant and I assume the cemeteries were relocated to
their plant site.

The Driskell Cemetery was in Land Lot 108 in the Fifth District of Monroe County
and was included in land formerly owned by John W. G. Greer, Jr., James Monroe

It was a small four-grave cemetery that was begun on the farm of James Monroe

about 1892 and he died in 1896.
The other grave is that of his son, James Monroe Driskell, Jr., who died in 1918.
Three of the graves were marked with slabs but no names

MISCELLANEOUS DEATHS - By Larry Childs
(Note: Many of these burials are listed in the COMPLETE surveys for cemeteries
or churches. )
The records below contain death Notices or listing that just mention the names of
the deceased below.
These death notices are all found in the Monroe Advertiser unless otherwise
listed. Please note the dates below are
newspaper notices dates or that of the newspaper weekly edition. When you look
these up my experience was that I
often found other letters of notices and cards of thanks in the following weeks.
In some cases I actually found Birth
and death dates, and names of other family members etc.
A very special thank you goes to Jane Newton for her dedicated work putting these
files together and allowing
researchers to use her material. Because of Mrs. Newton material we are now able
to identify some of the unmarked
burials that took place in Monroe County.
Please understand it is very possible the list may contain some errors. Even
though we have worked very hard to list
correct information it is easy to make a mistake. This material is intended to
assist you in locating orbits of
your descendants. We do not guarantee any of the information to be accurate. If
you should find any burials that belong
in a certain cemetery please let us know. I am especially interested in unmarked
burials.
In some limited cases I have added some information I found while test sampling
the orbits
We welcome any changes or corrections.

Bull-Carlton Family
- By Larry Childs This cemetery is located in Monroe County Ga. on Monticello Road , State highway 83 on the left side of the road coming
from Forsyth to Monticello Ga. Just before you get to the bridge at the Towaliga river (south side of River and left side of road).
If you go over the bridge you passed it.
There are three marked Burials there and maybe three others I am not sure.
There is a very large monument (Carlton) about eight feet high that can be easily seen from the road about 100 feet into the
woods. The cemetery over looks the river.

(Information from: Barbara Waldrop User181801@aol.com )
Mildred Gibson Willis Bull Phelps was an ancestor of most of
the many people of Monroe County who are Willis
descendants. She was a daughter of John Gibson who died in
1827 in Wilkes County Georgia and his wife Mildred (Millie)
Holladay Gibson.
Her first husband was George Willis who died 1816 in Wilkes
County Georgia. He was a son of James Willis of Virginia who
died 1813 in Wilkes County and his first wife Ann/Nancy.
They had sons:
Owen J willis,
George A Willis,
John G Willis
Mildred Gibson Willis married 2nd William H Bull (he is
buried in the Carlton-Bull Cemetery Mildred married
William H Bull 1818 in Wilkes County and they had several
children who lived to adulthood.
Mildred Gibson Willis Bull married 3rd Acquilla Phelps
Matilda Gibson (Mildred's sister) married 1st David Allison
who was guardian of Mildred's three Willis sons. Matilda,
who was Mildred's sister, married 3 more times. Matilda was
married last to James Lamar
Children in the cemetery are said to be a child of Mildred
and William Bull and a Bryant child. I don't know who the
Bryant child could be. One of Mildred's sons, John Gibson
Willis b 10 Jun 1810 Wilkes County, GA had a daughter by his
second wife who married a Bryant. Could this Bryant child be
Mildred's Great Grandchild? [I have Mary Lena Willis m.

to identify where each grave had been at its original
location.
Plant Scherer Cemetery I:
This cemetery, which is located on property formerly owned by the Zellner family,
contains eight smaller cemeteries relocated from the
project site. In most cases the orientation of the new site is identical to the
original. A few of the cemeteries, however, were reconstructed in a more orderly
fashion than the original site.
Any differences between the original site and the relocated graves is noted in
the following description of the graves.
The entire relocation tract covers an area of 3.11 acres. There is a chain-link
fence
surrounding the entire site and one running through the middle of the tract
separating some
of the cemeteries the following from others.

Colvin Cemetery Juliette United Methodist Church
- By Larry Childs This cemetery was re-located in 1975 - 1976 when Lake Juliette was built. Its
new location is on the left side of The Juliette United Methodist Church. The
cemetery along with Driskell family Cemetery, Wright family Cemetery and Speir
family Cemetery all are enclosed in a fenced in area next to the church.
The Cemeteries have only small numbered markers as may be seen in some of the
photos. There are no headstones to tell us who is buried there.
Looking at the photo you can see the United Methodist Church and part of its
cemetery.
Any help identifying those who are buried there are welcome.

FLETCHER FAMILY CEMETERY - BY LARRY CHILDS
This cemetery is on Georgia power property. It escaped removal when Georgia Power Built Lake Juliet. It is located on Colvin road
in Monroe County GA.
Directions to this cemetery from Forsyth Ga. Take State route 18 towards Gray Ga. About five miles out from Forsyth
Ga. Take Ebenezer Rd on the left to Ebenezer Cemetery. Take a right turn on Colvin road which is a small dirt road.
Follow this road until it runs to a chain across the road attached to two metal post. If the chain is up you may try
to get a Park Ranger at the office to un lock it for you. If not the cemetery is located about ¼ mile down the road on
the right at the edge of a small field about two acres in size. It has a six foot Rio Grande fence around it.
The cemetery is in very bad shape with only one marked burial. There are about five to eight burials in the
cemetery. Most of the burials are in rock walled enclosures only one is outside a enclosure.
Buried outside enclosures
James Fletcher Born September 15, 1813 Died November 29, 1862
NOTE: James parents (Richard) attended Holly Grove Church which is in this vicinity.
Small enclosure one unmarked enclosure maybe child
Large enclosure unknown burials possibly Taylor Family.
James's wife was a Taylor however she is buried in Bolingbrook with her family.
Second small enclosure one unmarked burial may be child
NOTES:
Name: Effy Fletcher
Age: 69
Estimated birth year: abt 1781
Birth place: North Carolina
Gender: Female
Home in 1850(City,County,State): Division 60, Monroe, Georgia
The 1840 census shows that there are four children.
The 1830 census shows
Name: Fletcher, Richard Township: Not Stated County: Monroe State: Georgia
The 1830 census show that Richard had three sons in 1830 one being between 10 and 20 I believe this will be James Flether born 1813.
By 1840 0ne of the younger boys is not with the family.
The census also shows him with three girls by 1840 there are only two girls.
By 1840 he is dead or missing as well as two children.
I believe that Richard Fletcher born about 1780, and Julia are in the large rock wall enclosure and the two children are in the
two small ones. There are clearly five burials and maybe three others.
