John Lamar
Built the famous old Lamar home on the Little River in 1810, to which Mirabeau and Lucius were brought when lads, and where in
after years the great statesman and jurist L W C Lamar Jr was born.
1808 Putnam Co. Deed Book A p 145 John Lamar of Baldwin makes deed of gift 4 Apr 1808 to present heirs of my brother James Lamar, Zachariah, Fannie,John, Polly and Dent certain lands in Baldwin, original grant to Joseph Wells, signed by Gov. Milledge Jan 5, 1805. It is provided that my brother James and his wife Caty or either of them who may survive the other shall have use of as much land as they may cultivate during life..etc. Witness by, among others Thomas Lamar Jr. (to destinguish him from Col.Thomas Lamar one of the eldest, and most influential men in Hancock Co, in which he represented in the celebrated constitutional convention of 1798) This deed would indicate that James had suffered some reverses of fortune, perhaps a collapse of physical vigor through the effects of disease or injuries received in battle? In James later will he leaves all property to 3 children who seem to have been less fortunate and to other 7 who seem to be well provided for he gives 5 shillings each. Among the latter is "Caty" Lamar and Obediah Richardson who is appt. Ex. and one of the most successful men of his day.
