Ceremony at St Mary's on the Hill Church unites Miss Phyllis Spears, Mr B Holland
St Mary's on the Hill Catholic Church was the scene yesterday
of the morning ceremony uniting in
marriage Miss Phyllis Janelle Spears, daughter of Mr
and Mrs CW Spears of Augusta, and Mr Bert
Charles Holland, son of Mr Mark C Holland of Rome, Ga
and the late Mrs Holland.
The ceremony was performed at 10am by the Rev Nicholas J Quinlan.
Urns of white gladion potted palms and candelabra holding
white candles interspersed with palms
decorated the church.
Mr RW Maddox Jr sang "Ave Maria", "The Lord's Prayer"
and "On this Day, Oh Beautiful Mother"
accompanied by Mrs WR Cameron, organist.
Attendants
Best man was Mr Julian E Rickerson and ushers were Mr
Julian Reese and Mr James
Reese of Martinez, Ga.
Miss Sandra Spears, sister of the bride, was maid of honor.
She wore a waltz-length
gown of mint green embroidered organdy over taffeta with
a V neckline and a satin cummerbund extending in fly away panels in the
back.
Bridesmaids, who wore gowns fashioned identically to that
of the honor attendant, were Mrs Charles
Murphy, sister of the bride, in yellow, and Miss Joan
Toole in lavender. All attendants carried arm
bouquets of yellow roses.
Rosepoint Lace Over Satin
The bride's gown of rosepoint lace over satin featured
a fitted bodice of lace embroidered with seed
pearls, with long sleeves ending in points over the hands.
The floor-length skirt of tulle was designed with
inset panels of lace extending to the hemline. Her waist
length veil fell from a tiara of seed pearls and she
carried a bouquet of white carnations and white chrysanthemums
centered with a white orchid.
Mrs Spears chose for her daughter's wedding a beige silk
shantung dress with matching cape and
contrasting accessories and a lavender orchid corsage.
The groom's sister, Mrs Paul Lewandowsk, wore a brown
polished cotton dress with pink accessories
and a lavender orchid corsage.
The reception was held at the home of Mrs Esther N Chandler.
The rooms were decorated with
arrangements of spring flowers.
Two urns of white gladioli were placed at the foot of the stairs where the receiving line formed.
The bride's table was covered with a white linen, cloth
with lace inserts and centered with a low bowl
filled with white carnations, stock and sweet peas.
Assisting at the reception were Mrs Chandler, Mrs WJ Edmonds,
Miss Eugenia Thompson, and Mrs
Catherine Meyers of Atlanta. Miss Karry Vaughn kept the
bride's book.
For a wedding trip to the mountains of Tennessee, the
bride chose a navy linen suit with white
accessories and the orchid from her bouquet.
Out of town guests included Mr and Mrs Wilbur Chavis of
Atlanta and Mrs George Chandler of
Tallapoosa, Ga.
