The descendants of Thomas R. Rowe held an annual "Rowe reunion" for several years.  It was originally held at the homes of Thomas's children but was later held at the Log Cabin in Walker Park (near Monroe, GA) until the time of the last gathering of the family.
 The purpose of this reunion was to gather all of the family together in one place, to meet new members of the family, to reminisce about the loved ones that had "gone home", and to just enjoy being with the family.  These were the same reasons I had for beginning this project Oct 13, 1979.
 Every possible effort has been made to be accurate in the recording of all information.  Despite my efforts, there will undoubtedly be some mistakes.  I apologize for all wrong or misstated facts.
 It is my hope that this book will be the basis for the continuation of the "family tree".  Spaces have been left so that information about births, marriages, and deaths may be entered as they occur.
 It was with great pleasure that I had this part in preserving these facts and legends of this family for the current generations and for the ones yet to come.

ROWE

 The surname Rowe has four origins and because of the misspelling of the name on records through the years, it is now impossible to seperate them.
 In England, the Old English word Ruh, meaning "rough or rowdy", formed the nicknames of the following which finally was used as a surname: Geoffrey le (the) Ruwe, Leicestershire in 1195; John and Richard Le Roue, Cheshire in 1260; Walter le Roue, Essex in 1262; and Walter le Rouwe, Essex in 1320.
 Another Old English meaning of the name was from the word ruh, meaning "rough or uncultured land".  The other Old English meaning was from the word raw,or raew, meaning "in line", such as a row of houses.  Richard Rowe lived in Staffordshire in 1306, John de (of) Rowe lived in Kent in 1317, and Robert del Rowe lived in Suffolk in 1412.  None of these have been proven to be related to this branch of the family.
 In Scotland, the meaning of the name is from the place named Row in Dumbartonshire.  Early users of the name in Scotland include: William de Rowe who had land in Dunipais around 1200, the Rev. John Row. (1525-1580) who was the first Protestant minister in Perth, and his grandson, the Rev. John Row (1598-1672) who was the author of Hebraeae Linguas Institutiones, the first work in Hebrew that was printed in Scotland.
 Early settlers in this country included: Nicholas Row who arrived in Virginia in 1621, John Row(e) who had land in Wight county in Virginia in 1643, and Thomas Rowe who was granted 500 acres in Northumberland county in 1652, Nicholas Rowe was in Rhode Island in 1640, Matthew Rowe was in Connecticut in 1650, and John Rowe was in Maine in 1664.
 Seven officers in the Revolutionary Army had the surname of Rowe.

 
Chapter 1

THOMAS ROWE
(circa 1800 - circa 1845)

 Thomas Rowe (circa 1800 NC - circa 1845) and his wife Mary (Smare) Rowe (circa 1800 VA - circa ?) are probably the earliest known members of this particular branch of the Rowe family.  It is thought that Mary was the daughter of John Smare.  Although there is no definite proof of this fact, there is reason to believe that Thomas and Mary (Smare) Rowe are the parents of James Rowe, the father of Thomas R. Rowe.  According to the 1860 Richmond County, GA census, Nancy Smars (sic) was a serving girl living with James and Mary Ann (Walker) Rowe in Richmond Co, GA., Nancy was probably a relative of Mary (Smare) Rowe.
 Thomas Rowe was born circa 1800 in North Carolina  and probably died circa 1845(?).  Thomas married Oct 25,1823 (Richmond Co, GA) Mary Smare.  The 1850 Census list Mary Rowe, age 50, as the head of her Richmond County household.  Also listed are three children, Robert Rowe (see Chapter 16), James Rowe (see following), and Kenny (or Henry?) Rowe age 16.  This is the last known record of Mary and her son Kenny (or Henry?) but Robert is listed as living next to James and Mary Ann (Walker) Rowe in the 1860 Richmond County census.  Children of Thomas and Mary:

Chapter 2

 
JAMES ROWE
(circa 1832 - Sept 20,1888)

 James "Jim" Rowe, probably the second son of Thomas and Mary (Smare) Rowe, was born circa 1832 in Georgia (Richmond County ?).  James married July 3,1853 (Richmond Co, GA) Mary Ann (Hood ?)Walker who was born circa 1827 in Richmond Co, Ga.  James and Mary Ann were married by James E. Cashiu J.P. (sic)
 There are two possibilities regarding the parents of Mary Ann.  One possibility is that she was the daughter of Golathan and Elizabeth L. (?) Walker.  Another possibility is that Mary Ann was the daughter of Benjamin and Susan “Ann” (Barlow) Hood  who were married Jan 5, 1822 (Richmond Co, GA).  Benjamin Hood was born circa 1807 (Richmond Co, GA ?) and Susan (Barlow) Hood was born circa 1811 (Richmond Co, GA ?).  Both of Mary Ann’s parents were born in Georgia.  The death certificates for two of James and Mary Ann’s sons, James “Jim” Jr. and Charley, list their mother’s maiden name as Hood.  Mary Ann is also said to have been the sister of Rebecca C. Hood, the wife of James’ brother, Robert J. Rowe (see Chapter 16).  Rebecca C. Hood was the daughter of Benjamin and Susan Hood.  If Mary Ann’s maiden name was Hood, it would mean that she was married 1st (circa 1845) to a Walker.  Mary had two children before she married James, George Walker and Rebecca Walker.  After marrying James, Mary Ann's two children used both surnames.
 At the time of the 1860 Richmond County census, a Nancy Smars (age 29), a serving girl, was living with James and Mary Ann.  This Nancy was probably a relative of James, possibly a cousin.  James was a farmer in Richmond County, GA when the Civil War began.  James’ brother, Robert J. Rowe, died circa 1862.  It is not known if he died while serving during the Civil War.  At age 31, James enlisted (August 5,1863) as a private in 2nd Company D, 12th Battalion Georgia Light Artillery C.S.A..  James and his Company were then sent to James Island in South Carolina where James became the company cook.  After being in the army for only ten months, James was wounded at the Battle of Turkey Ridge (officially called Cold Harbor) in Hanover County, Virginia in June 1864, part of Grant’s Overland Campaign (May - June 1864).   This  was the first battle in which Gen. Ulysses S. Grant and Gen. Robert E. Lee confronted each other.  Grant commented in his memoirs that this was the only attack he wished he had never ordered.  The battle resulted in a Confederate victory.  James was shot in the right hip on June 4, 1864 and was admitted to Confederate States of America General Hospital in Danville, Virginia. On June 6,1864, James was furloughed and sent to the Convalescent Camp in Augusta, Georgia.  After leaving the Convalescent Camp, on Sept. 7,1864, James never rejoined his Company, "not being fit for duty", but soon moved his family to Walton County, GA (circa 1865), probably to start a new life as many others did after the war was over.
 At the time of the 1870 Walton County census, James and his family were living in Subdivision 129 (455b).  In the 1880 Walton County census, James was living in the Brooks district (118-12).  Their daughter, Martha, was living with James and Mary Ann, along with her husband, Franklin N. Phillips, and her son, Tidney Phillips.  James and Mary Ann’s son, Robert “Bob”, was living three houses away with his wife, Fannie, and their two children, Jessie and Bessie.
 Even though James had started his new life he was still plagued by his memories of the war.  The wound that he had received during the war had never healed.  This could be a possible link to a diabetic condition suffered by many of the descendants of James.  "James was down for months at a time with his leg .... was suffering all the time .... and had a running sore on his right leg ever since the war .... was weak in the spine and right side .... had gangrene in his right leg when he died at his home in Walton County .... and for eight months before his death he could not go without his crutches.  James died September 20,1888 and it is believed that Mary Ann died circa 1900 in Walton County, since she only received army pension payments until 1899.  Also, there is no record of Mary Ann Rowe in the 1900 Walton Co, Ga census.  The exact burial place of James and Mary Ann Rowe is not known but are believed to be buried in unmarked graves at Mountain Creek Baptist Church Cem., along with several of their children, or at their old homesite somewhere in "Brooks district" of Walton County.  James and Mary Ann had the following children, at least three of which were born after they moved to Walton County, GA.:

VIII.) WILLIAM ROWE
(circa 1866 - circa 1922)
 William "Bill" Rowe, son of James and Mary Ann (Hood ?)Walker Rowe, was born circa 1866 (Walton Co, GA ?) and died before 1935.  "Bill" married Jan 29,1891 (Walton Co, GA - I186) Mary E. Woodruff who was born 1861 in GA and died June 22, 1924 (Walton Co, GA - #19848-F).  According to the death certificate for Mary, she died from having accute dysentery for 12 days, caused from eating vegetables.  Also, according to her death certificate, Mary is buried at Mtn. Creek Cem, her grave is unmarked.  It is also believed that “Bill” is also buried there but it has not been proven.
 No known record of William and Mary Rowe has been found in the 1900 Walton Co, GA census.  In the 1900 Walton County census (Cutoff District 97-18a), a William R. Rowe (born Mar 1860) and his wife Mary E. (born Mar 1854), were living with their children, Alvin (born Oct 1882), Sterling (born Apr 1885), and Adell (born Jan 1887).  This couple reported that they had been married 19 years (married circa 1881).  This could have been “Bill” and Mary since she was older than “Bill” and was 30 years old when they were married.  The children could have been Mary’s from a previous marriage.  In the 1920 Walton County census, (Towns district 166-19b), “Willie” (age 59) and Mary (age 59) were renting a home on Nells (?) Street. This is thought to have been “Bill” and Mary but it has not been proven.  William and Mary are not known to have had any children.
 

 
Chapter 2 (A)

I.) GEORGE WALKER-ROWE
(circa 1850 - before 1935)

 George Walker-Rowe, the son of Mary Ann (Hood ?) Walker Rowe, was born circa 1850 (Richmond Co, GA ?), three years before his mother married James Rowe.  The date of his marriage, his wife's name and date of birth, as well as George's date of death are unknown but it is thought to have been before 1935. It is said that George used both the Walker and Rowe surnames.
 In the 1870 Walton County census, a George Walker was living alone in Subdivision #129 (456b) in household #85, James and Mary Ann Rowe were living in household #65.
 Walton County marriage records list a marriage Jan 12, 1871 (E342) between George Walker and Sylvana Cannon and a marriage Feb 12, 1893 (H310) between George Walker and Malinda Thomas.
 The 1880 Walton County census, a G. W. Walker age 29 (born in GA) was living in Blasingames District #503 (139-23) with his wife V. Walker age 29 (born in GA) and a daughter L. E. Walker age 4 (born in GA).  This G. W. Walker’s occupation was a wheelwright.
 It has not been proven that these marriages and census records were for George Walker-Rowe.
 The widows pension records for Mary Ann Walker Rowe list a George Walker who submitted a reference letter in 1899.  No record of George Walker could be located in the 1900 Walton Co, GA census.
 
 

 
Chapter 2 (B)

II.) REBECCA WALKER-ROWE
(circa 1852 - before 1935)

 Rebecca "Becky or Bessie" Walker-Rowe, the daughter of Mary Ann (Hood ?) Walker Rowe, was born circa 1852 (Richmond Co, GA), the year before her mother married James Rowe.  According to family legend, as told by Eula Rowe Johnson, Rebecca used both the Walker and Rowe surnames.  According to the 1880 Census, there were two granddaughters living with James and Mary Ann Rowe and their children, these were probably children that "Becky" had while still living at home.  Their names were:

 No record of Rebecca Walker-Rowe could be located in the 1900 Walton Co, Ga census.  Family legend, as told by Eula Rowe Johnson, says that Rebecca married a Smith.  Rebecca married circa 1890  Henry Smith.  It is thought that after she married Henry Smith, Rebecca’s two daughters used the Smith surname.  The date of death for Rebecca is not known but it is thought to have been before 1935.  The burial place of Rebecca and her husband is also not known.  Rebecca and her husband Henry Smith had at least the following children:

 Anna Elizabeth “Toots or Tutt” Rowe-Smith, the daughter of Rebecca Rowe Smith, was born Apr 23, 1874 (Walton Co, GA) and died May 20, 1941 (Walton Co, GA).  The 1880 Walton County census listed Rebecca as “Tutt Rowe” age 4 , born circa 1876.  After Anna’s mother, Rebecca Rowe, married Henry Smith, Anna and her sister are said to have used the Smith surname. Anna married 1st Jan 4, 1894 (Walton Co, GA - I329) James A. Woodruff.  The name on the marriage license is listed as Anna E. Rowe.; Issue:

Creek Cem.  Their unmarked graves are located at the head of William Carlton Burt; Issue:

 No record could be found for Tom Smith in the 1900 Walton Co, GA census.  In the 1920 Walton County census, Tom Smith, his wife Mamie, and their children were living in Lindley District #415 (158-14b).  This family were neighbors to Fred G. Murrell, Ollie and Eula Rowe Johnson, and Henry and Effie Rowe Woodruff.  In the 1930 Walton County census (415th District - 149-4:3b) Tom and Mamie were living next to Isaac and Lucile Rowe.  Tom stated in the census that his father was born in Germany.  According to Barbara Rowe Davis, the great-granddaughter of Tom and Mamie Smith and the granddaughter of Isaac and Lucile Smith Rowe, Tom and Mamie Smith are buried at Mt. Creek Cem.  According to Gene Rowe, the grandson of Tom and Mamie Smith and the son of Isaac and Lucile Rowe, the unmarked graves of Tom and Mamie Smith are located at the head of the graves of Isaac and Lucile Rowe.

Phillips who was born circa 1859.  At the time of the 1880 Walton County census, Martha and her husband and son were living in the house with James and Mary Ann Rowe in the Brooks district (118-12).  Issue:

 Robert “Bob” Rowe, son of James and Mary Ann (Hood ?) Walker Rowe, was born circa 1858 (Richmond Co, GA ?) and married Dec 1,1875 (Walton Co, GA - E464)  Lucenda Fannie Perkins who was born Dec 1845 (1900 Walton County census list year of birth for Fannie as Dec 1840). At the time of the 1880 Walton County census, Robert and Fannie were living 3 houses from James and Mary Ann Rowe, in the Brooks district (118-12).  Fannie’s son John was living next door with Fannie’s mother and brother.  Robert is thought to have died circa 1887 because according to the 1900 Census (Tanners district 98-11b), Fannie was a widow living with her son, John D. Perkins who was born Aug 1871.  Also, Robert was not mentioned in the Civil War pension records of his mother, Mary Ann Rowe, after Robert’s father died Sept 20, 1888.  No record could be located for Robert Rowe in the 1900 Walton Co, GA census.  Robert and Fannie are said to be buried at Mtn. Creek Baptist Church Cem, their graves are unmarked.  Their grandson, Bobby Lewis Rowe, remembers going with his father, George W. Rowe, to clean off the graves when he was a child.  Bobby’s wife, Sara, researched the information on this family.  Robert and Fannie had the following children:

 Jessie Rowe, daughter of Robert and Fannie Rowe, was born circa 1877 and died Sept 20, 1924 (Walton Co, GA - #28817-F).  Jessie married Aug 12, 1897 (Walton Co, GA - J54) James B. “Jim” Hood (b:circa 1863 - d:Sept 25, 1924 Walton Co, GA #28818-F).  James died 5 days after Jessie.  In the 1920 Walton County census, this family was living in Lindley’s District (158-6a).  According to their granddaughter, Betty Hood Lovern, Jessie and Jim are buried at Mt. Creek Cem. near the graves of Fred Murrell.  The graves are unmarked;  Issue:

 Annie Ruth Hood, the daughter of Jessie Rowe and Jim Hood, was born June 7, 1902 and died Dec 31, 1984(Walton Co, GA).  Ruth married May 19, 1918 (Walton Co, GA - L195) Oscar Henson (b:1900 - d:1982), both are buried at Hill Haven Cem.  The Social Security Death Index list the following information: Oscar (b:Oct 15, 1899 - d:May 1982) and Annie (b:Jun 17, 1903 - d:Dec 1984).  In the 1920 Walton County census (Lindley’s District 158-6a), this family was living next door to Jim and Jessie Rowe Hood.  In the 1930 Walton County census, this family was living in 415th District (149-4:5a).  Ruth’s cousin, Rev. John Rowe, preached her funeral at Mtn. Creek Baptist Church where she was a member; Issue:

 George Benjamin Washington Rowe, son of Robert and Fannie Rowe, was born Jan 26, 1882 and died Jan 20, 1958 (Walton Co, GA - #2354).  George married Dec 22, 1911 (Gwinnett Co, GA - book 10 page 172) Fannie Pearl Dailey (b:Aug 7,1894 - d:Mar 1,1968 Walton Co, GA #008002)  George and his wife are both buried at Mountain Creek Church Cem.  At the time of the 1920 Walton County census, George and his family were living in the Brooks district (167-5a).  In the 1930 Walton County census this family was living in 421 District Brooks (149-16:4a) on Head Road.  George Rowe is said to have referred to James C. “Jim” Rowe, the son of Charles and Josie (Davis) Rowe (see Chapter 2G) as his half brother.  This relationship has not been proven.  Rowe Road in Walton Co, GA was named in memory of George Rowe.; Issue:

Chapter 2 (E)

V.) JOHN R. ROWE
(Oct 1860 - Mar 13, 1935)

 John R. "Jack" Rowe, son of James and Mary Ann (Hood ?) Walker Rowe, was born circa Oct 1860 (Richmond Co, GA) and died Mar 13, 1935 (Walton Co, GA - #8572).  “Jack” died at 3 o’clock on a Wednesday afternoon after a four month illness, according to his obituary.  In the pension records for Mary Ann Rowe, John stated that he was born in May 1858.  The 1900 Walton County census (Town District 103-28a) list John’s date of birth as Oct 1858 and Fannie’s date of birth as Feb 1857.  The tombstone for John and Fannie list the year of birth for John as 1845 in error.  John was not listed as living with his parents, James and Mary Ann Rowe, at the time of the 1880 Walton County census.
 John married Aug 23,1888 (Walton County, GA - I82) (one month before his father James Rowe died) Fannie Wiggins who was born Feb 1857 in GA and died Aug 6, 1927 (Walton Co, GA # 20423-I).  Fannie’s tombstone list her year of birth as 1864.  The date of death for John and Fannie was taken from Walton County Probate Court records.
  At the time of the 1920 Walton County census, John and Fannie were renting a house on the Monroe Winder road in the Town District (164-03a) and listed his occupation as farmer.  In the 1920 census,  John listed his age as 57 (born 1863) and Fannie listed her age as 55 (born 1865).  "Jack" and Fannie Rowe are said to have had no children but in the 1900 Walton County census, Fannie stated that she was the mother of one child that was still living.  This child was not listed as living in their household.  In the obituary for John he was listed as being survived by a step-daughter, Leila Smith who lived at Winder.  Also, in his obituary, John was said to have been living with his nephew, Roscoe Davis, at the time of his death.  John was a member of Mtn. Creek Baptist Church.
 The widows pension papers for Mary Ann Walker Rowe list John Rowe as a reference.  John and Fannie are buried at Mountain Creek Baptist Church Cem. near Monroe.
 

 
Chapter 2 (F)

VI.) JAMES JR. “JIM”  ROWE
(May 15, 1862 (circa) - Apr 6, 1923)

 James Jr. "Jim" Rowe, son of James and Mary Ann (Hood ?) Walker Rowe,  was born May 15, 1862 (circa) (Richmond Co, GA ) and died Apr 6, 1923 (Walton Co, GA #12678-E).  Jim married Dec 23, 1886 (Walton Co, GA - G433) "Lizzie" Elizabeth F. A. Hall who was born circa 1865 and died after 1923.  “Lizzie” was the sister of Sarah Jane Hall, the first wife of Fred G. Murrell.
 At the time of the 1920 Walton County census, Jim and Lizzie were living on South Broad Street in the Town District (166-17a).  Jim listed his age as 63 and Liz was listed as being age 55. t It is said that Jim and Lizzie lived in Atlanta, GA at one time and it is thought that Jim died of cancer.  The death certificate for Jim lists his cause of death as unknown and that he was buried at Mtn. Creek Cem.  According to Kathleen Rowe Murrell, their granddaughter, both are buried at Mt. Creek Cem, their graves are not marked.  They had at least the following children:

 Frank Rowe, son of Jim and Lizzie Rowe,  was born circa 1889 and died before 1948 as Fannie listed her first husband as “dead” on her marriage application when she remarried in 1948. The date is not  known but Frank Rowe married (after 1920) Fannie Rowe, his first cousin, who was the daughter of Charles and Josie Rowe.  Frank and Fannie both were severely crippled from birth.  They had no children.

 Annie Rebecca Rowe, the daughter of James Jr. and Lizzie Hall Rowe, was born Mar 9, 1891 (Walton Co, GA) and died Aug 30, 1972 (Walton Co, GA).  Annie married circa 1912, Eura “Eurie” M. Fuller (b:1865 - d:1938).  The Social Security Death Index list the following information: Annie (b:Mar 9, 1891 - d:Aug 1972).  In the 1902 Walton County census (Lindley’s District 158-13a) Eurie listed his age as 44 (born circa 1876) and was living five houses from Thomas R. Rowe and his family.  Annie and Eurie are both buried at Mt. Creek Cem.  Annie’s funeral was at Mtn. Creek Baptist Church, she was a member of Double Springs Baptist Church.  At the time of her death, Annie lived in Good Hope and had 15 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.; Issue:

 Mary Effie Rowe, the daughter of James Jr. “Jim” and Lizzie Hall Rowe, was born Sept 22, 1898 (Walton Co, GA) and died Oct 29, 1973 (Clarke Co, GA).  According to the 1920 Walton County census (Lindley’s 415 District; 158-14b) Effie listed her year of birth as 1896.  Effie married circa 1919 Henry Woodruff (b:1898 - d: ?).  Henry was the grandson of Rebecca Rowe Smith making him Effie’s 2nd cousin (see Chapter 2B).The Social Security Death Index list the following information: Effie (b:Jul 22, 1892 - d:Oct 1972); Henry (b:Apr 23, 1897 - d:Sept 1962).  At the time of the 1920 census, this family was living next to Ollie and Eula Rowe Johnson, Fred G. Murrell and his family, and also Tom and Mamie Smith (the son of Martha E. Rowe).  Effie’s cousin, Rev. John Rowe, preached her funeral at Mtn. Creek Baptist church where she was a member.  Effie is buried at Westlawn Cem. in Monroe.  The burial location of Henry is unknown.  Henry Woodruff is said to have had at least five other children.  At the time of her death, Effie had 7 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.  Effie and Henry had one child:

 Isaac Joshua Calvin Rowe, son of Jim and Lizzie Rowe,  was born Oct 9,1901(Walton County ?) and died June 20,1977 (County ?).  Isaac married Oct 21, 1928 (Walton Co, GA) Lucile Smith, his 2nd cousin,  who was born July 26, 1910 and died Dec 12, 1992. Lucile was the daughter of Tom and Mamie Smith. Tom Smith was the son of Rebecca Walker-Rowe , the sister of James Jr. “Jim” Rowe (see Chapter 2C).  In the 1930 Walton County census this family was living in 415th District (149-4:3b) next to Tom and Mamie Smith.  Isaac also lived at Porterdale, GA.  Both are buried at Mountain Creek Baptist Church Cem. near Monroe.  They had the following children:

VII.) CHARLES ROWE
(circa 1864 - Feb 8, 1924)

 Charles "Charley" Rowe, son of James and Mary Ann (Hood ?) Walker Rowe, was born  circa 1864 (Richmond Co, GA ?) and died Feb 8, 1924 (Walton Co, GA  #6255-F).  According to his death certificate, Charley was examined by a surgeon in South Carolina in 1923.  It is not known  for what reason Charley was examined.  Charles is said to have been a tall, slim man, his brothers are said to have all been short.  Charles married Sept 9,1883 (Walton Co, GA - G353) Josie Davis who was born circa 1863 in Walton Co, GA and died Sept 7, 1933 (Walton Co, GA - #21983).  Josie was the daughter of Tom and Eliza (Dalton) Davis.
 In the 1920 Walton County census (Town District 164-07a) Charley and Josie were renting a house on Vinegar Hill Rd, close to John and Fannie Wiggins Rowe.  In the census, Charley listed his age as 60 (born 1860) and Josie stated her age as 57.  Two of their children, Fannie and Patrick were living with them.  Charles was listed as a reference in the widows pension papers for Mary  Ann Walker Rowe.  “Charley” and Josie are both buried at Mtn. Creek Cem, their graves are  unmarked.  They had at least the following children:

 Charles Rowe Jr., son of Charles and Josie Davis Rowe, was born Jan 1, 1900 and died Feb 7, 1985 (Walton Co, GA - #003376).  The obituary for Charles stated that he was born Aug 20,  1896.  Charles married June 9, 1928 (Walton Co, GA - M143) Edna L. Cowan (b:July 22, 1906 - d:Sept 19, 1954 Walton Co, GA #21656), both buried at Eastview Cem. in Monroe.  This family  lived on Rowe Rd but after Edna died, Charles lived with Bill Johnson around the Walker Park  community.  In 1918 Charles listed is occupation as working on the farm of Jim Rowe Jr.  Charles lived in Griffin, Ga in 1966.  Charles and Edna are not known to have had any children.
 

6.) Fannie Rowe
(May 1, 1903 - May 1979)
 Fannie Rowe, the daughter of Charles and Josie Davis Rowe, was born May 1, 1903 and  died May 1979 (dates from Social Security Death Index).  At the time of the 1920 Walton County census (Town District 164-07a), Fannie’s age was listed as 15 (born circa 1904).  Fannie’s grave is marked with only a metal marker (Arthur Bowick Funeral Home) that list her year of birth as 1906 and her name is spelled as Morrell.  Fannie is said to have been severely crippled.  Fannie  married 1st (after 1920) Frank Rowe, her first cousin (see Frank Rowe, son of James Jr. Rowe - Chapter  2F).  Fannie married 2nd Feb 12,1948 (Walton Co, GA - N329) Clarence Murrell (b:circa 1909 -  ?)(thought to be the son of John Murrell, see Chapter 15- not proven).  On their marriage license  application, Fannie stated that her first husband was dead and that her age was 43, Clarence stated that his parents were dead and his age was 39.  Fannie had no known children, she is buried at Mt. Creek Cem.  An unmarked grave beside Fannie is probably Frank Rowe or Clarence Murrell.

 Eliza “Liza” Rowe, daughter of Charles and Josie Rowe, was born 1887 and died 1966  (before Nov 14th as she was not listed as a survivor in the obituary for her brother, Thomas Patrick Rowe who died Nov 14, 1966.  Liza married Nov 2, 1902 (Walton Co, GA - J280) Will Henry  Dalton (b:1885 - d:1929 ?)(death date incorrect on tombstone, Will was living at the time of the  1930 Walton county census).  Will and Liza are buried at Mtn. Creek Baptist Cem.  At the time of the 1920 Walton county census, this family was living in Town District (164-07a) in the house next to Charles and Josie Rowe.  Living with them at this time was Clarence “Buck” and William “Bill” Johnson (both age 8), the twin sons of Liza’s sister, “Bless” Rowe Johnson.  At the time of the 1930 Walton county census this family was living in 415 Militia district (149-4:9b), four houses  from Fred Murrell.  Living with this family in 1930 was Josie Rowe, Liza’s mother who was a widow.  Also living with this family were five children, the orphans of James C. “Jim” and Cora Murrell Rowe, who were listed in the census as being the nephew and nieces of Liza and Will.  The children listed were Leonard, Berta Lee, Florine, Lonnie Bell, and Elsie Inez Rowe.  Liza and Will  had the following children:

 James C. “Jim” Rowe, the son of Charles and Josie (Davis) Rowe,  was born 1889 and died July 14, 1924 (Walton Co, GA #23023-F).  Jim married Apr 7, 1912 (Gwinnett Co, GA ) Cora  Murrell (b:1892 - d:June 29, 1928 Walton Co, GA #17231-J).  According to his death certificate, Jim died from pneumonia.  The exact relationship of Jim to George W. Rowe, the son of Robert  “Bob” and Fannie Rowe is not known, but George is said to have referred to “Jim” as his half  brother.  This has not been proven.
 At the time of the 1920 Walton County census, Jim Rowe and his family were living in the house next to George and Fannie Rowe.  In the 1930 census, the orphaned children were living with Liza and Will Dalton and were listed as the nephew and nieces of Liza and Will.  Jim and Cora are both buried at Mt. Creek Cem.; Issue:

 Will R. Rowe, son of Charles and Josie (Davis) Rowe, was born Sept 15, 1894 (Walton Co, GA) and died Sept 13, 1967.  Will married Sept 10, 1911 (Walton Co, GA - K321) Mattie Lula  Mae McDaniel (b:May 12, 1896 - d:Dec 11, 1950).  It is thought that Mattie’s maiden name could have been McDonald but on the marriage license it was listed as McDaniel.
At the time of the 1920 Walton County census (January 1920), Mattie was living in Town  District (166-15b) with her two daughters, Willie Mae age 5, and Rosa Lee age 3 5/12.  Mattie  stated that she was divorced and was working at the Cotton Mill.  She was living in the house with a McDonald family.  These could have been her relatives.
 At one time this family lived on Rowe Rd (across from George W. and Fannie Rowe) and then in Griffin, Ga., in 1966.  Will and Mattie are buried at Mt. Creek Cem.; Issue:

THOMAS R. ROWE
(Oct 28,1874 - May 28,1938)

 Thomas R. Rowe, the son of James and Mary Ann (Hood ?) Walker Rowe, was born Oct  28,1874 in Walton County,GA (date as listed on tombstone). According to 1880 and 1900 census records, Thomas was born in May 1870.  In the 1900 Walton County census, Tom and Leila were living in the Vinegar Hill district (99-15a). In the 1920 Walton County census, they were living in the Lindleys district (158-13a), four houses from Tom and Anna Murrell.  Thomas used the initial "R." as his middle name but according to his son, John, his middle name was "Cleg".  Thomas  married 1st Leila Murrell, the daughter of Lizzie Murrell (see Chapter 15).  Leila and "Tom" Rowe were married Feb 1,1891 in Walton County (I-188).  Leila was born on Feb 21,1876 in Walton  County and died April 4,1924 at the age of 48 (Walton Co, GA  #13320-F).  Thomas died on May 28,1938 (Walton Co, GA - #16387).  They are both buried at Mountain Creek Baptist Church  Cem., both were members of this church but later moved their memberships to Double Springs  Baptist Church.  Thomas and Leila Rowe had the following children:

 Thomas R. Rowe married 2nd Paralee (Switzer) Austin.  They were married Sept 1,1926 in Walton Co, GA (M81).  Paralee was born circa 1879 (possibly Morgan Co, GA) and died ?.   Paralee had 3(?) children when she married Tom; Mildred, Ann Ellen, and Azalee Hackett.  Walton County marriage records list a Dec 23, 1900 (J/188) marriage for Paralee Switzer and John Hackett.  Also, listed is a Nov 10, 1912 (K/352) marriage for Mrs. Paralee Hackett and O.D. Austin.  Listed also is a Dec 31, 1921 (L/353) marriage for Annie Ellen Hackett and Chester Allen.   In the 1920 Walton County census (159-8a) Walter J. Smith is listed living with his wife Azilee, this has not been proven to be Paralee’s daughter.
 At the time of the 1920 Walton County census, Paralee was living in house #134 on  Ammons Bridge Road in the Brooks District (167-8b).  Parylee (sic) listed her age as 41 and that she was a widow.  Living with Paralee were three daughters, Anna Ellen age 17, Mildred G. age 13, and Floddie (sic) age 10 (this may have been Azilee - not proven).  The 1880 Morgan Co, GA census (District 282 - 394d) lists a Paralu Switzer age 6, living with her parents, A. T. And Ellen  Switzer.  This may have been the parents of Paralee but it has not been proven.
 After an argument with Tom over his land deed, Paralee told Tom that she was going to  visit her daughter and ask him to take her to Azalee's house.  She never came back to live with  Thomas and they were divorced circa 1927.  After the divorce from Tom, Paralee never remarried.  The date of her death and burial site is not known.  Tom and Paralee had no children.
 Thomas R. Rowe married 3rd Mollie Estelle (Cheeks) Wheeler.  They were married Mar 30, 1932 in Walton County, GA (M282).  "Miss Mollie" was born Mar 28,1896 in Walton County and died Jan 18,1984 in Paulding County,GA.  Mollie was the daughter of Ed Lewis and Sara Mady (Duck)Cheeks.  Mollie had three children when she married Tom (from previous marriage); Cora, Bertha Lean, and Robert.  "Miss Mollie" is buried at Paulding Memorial Gardens Cem.  Tom and Mollie Rowe had the following children:

At the time of the 1920 Walton County census, Eula and Ollie were living in the Lindley’s District (158-14b) next to Fred G. Murrell, Henry and Effie Rowe Woodruff, and Tom and Mamie Smith.  "Ollie" and Eula are both buried at Mountain Creek Baptist Church Cem. near Monroe, GA.  Eula Mae died Apr 24,1990 (Walton Co, GA) at age 92.  Ollie and Eula Johnson had the following children:

 Claude Millard Rowe, fifth child of Thomas and Leila Rowe, was born in Walton Co, GA on March 9,1903 and married Maggie Lee Adams Aug 17,1924 in Gwinnett Co, GA. (recorded in Walton Co, GA - M25).  Maggie was the daughter of Henry Harrison Adams and Ollie Ola (Moore) Adams, and was born Jan 4,1905 in Gwinnett Co, GA. Claude and Maggie met at Ozora Baptist Church near Grayson, GA and were married by Rev. Will D. Mobley at Maggie's father's birthday dinner.  Claude was a farmer most of his life but was once a policeman in Grayson, he retired in 1972 after working for a surveying firm.  Claude also was a diabetic.  Both Claude and Maggie were members of New Rock Springs Baptist Church near Dacula, GA.  Claude died June 5,1985 in Gwinnett Co, GA ; Maggie died July 22,1990 (Gwinnett Co, GA).  Both are buried at Double Springs Baptist Church Cem. near Monroe, GA.   Their children were:

 Lillie Gertrude Rowe, sixth child of Thomas and Leila Rowe, was born Oct 7,1905 in Walton Co, GA and died Nov 20,1995 in Walton Co, GA.  Lillie married 1st Burse Nathan Meadows (Sept 4,1921 in Walton Co, GA).  Burse was born Aug 7,1900 in Barrow Co, GA and died Jan 3,1954 in Walton CO, GA.  Lillie and Burse are buried at Double Springs Baptist Church Cem. near Monroe.  Lillie married 2nd Herschel Knox Malcom (Aug 5,1956 in Walton Co, GA - O/174).  Herschel was born May 27, 1894 in Oconee Co, GA and died Feb 23,1964 in Clarke Co, GA. (tombstone says 1965).   Herschel is buried at Mt. Vernon Christian Church Cem.  At the time of her death, Lillie was survived by 19 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, and 10 great-great-grandchildren.  Lillie and Burse had the following children:

Elizabeth “Lizzie” Murrell Family
(Oct 11, 1836 - May 20, 1896)
 The oldest known member of the Murrell family is Elizabeth "Lizzie" Murrell.  Lizzie Murrell was born Oct 11,1836 (Walton Co, GA - not proven) and died May 20,1896 in Walton Co, GA.  Lizzie is buried at Mountain Creek Baptist Church Cemetery near Monroe.  It is thought that Lizzie never married.  In the death notice of her daughter, Leila Rowe, she was listed as Miss Lizzie  Murrell.  Also, the name of Leila’s father was listed simply as Mr. Murrell on her death certificate.  One family legend says that Lizzie also had children by a man named  Weathers.  Another family legend says that the Murrell family was of Dutch ancestory.  Still another family legend says that this family is descended from a chief in the Cherokee nation that signed the peace treaty.  None of these legends have been proven yet.  Lizzie Murrell is known to have had the following children:

 Another member of the Murrell family, known only as "Newd" Murrell, is believed to have been a cousin to Leila Rowe, and would read the newspaper to Thomas R. Rowe during World War II.  Older members of the Murrell family said the “Newd’s” name was Johnny.  The 1900 Walton County census (Vinegar Hill District 99-15b) list a John Murrell (born Feb 1878) living with his sister Lizey (sic) (born May 1883) living near Thomas Rowe.  Walton County marriage records list a marriage Sept 7, 1907 (K110) for John Murrell and Jenevy Graves.  The 1920 Walton County census (Lindley’s District 158-12b) list John Murl (age 45) as a widower living with his son Clarence (age 11) living seven houses from Thomas Rowe.  This could be the Clarence Murrell that  married Fannie Rowe (not proven).  This John Murl may have been nicknamed “Newd” (not proven).  Living in the household next to John Murl in 1920 was a child named John Jr. Murl (age 8) adopted by Thomas Henson.  Walton County death records (#32578) indicate John Murrell died Oct 20, 1936.  According to the obituary for John Murrell, he was born in Morgan Co, GA and was survived by sons Clarence Murrell (of Monroe - probably the husband of Fannie Rowe) and Johnnie (of Milledgeville).  John Murrell was buried at Mtn. Creek Cem, his grave is unmarked.
 Family legend, as told by Betty Hood Lovern, says that “Lizzie” also had a son named Rob Murrell that married a woman named Agnes.  Agnes is said to have changed the spelling of their name to Morrell.  At the time of the 1920 Walton County census, there was a Robert Murrell living  in Brooks district (167-1a) with his family.  It is not know if this was the same person.

Murrell (b:July 24, 1878 - d:Dec 24, 1927), this has not been proven to be Tom’s wife.  At the time of the 1920 Walton County census, Tom and his family were living in the Lindleys district (158-13a), four houses from Thomas and Leila Rowe.  Issue:

 Fred Grady Murrell, son of Elizabeth “Lizzie” Murrell,  was born Aug 12, 1884 (Walton Co, GA) and died Nov 5, 1962 (Walton Co, GA - #32959).  Fred married 1st Aug 21,1900 (Walton Co, GA - J167) Sarah Jane Hall who was born Sept 11,1876 (Walton Co, GA) and died Mar 4, 1919 (Walton Co, GA #3108-A).  Sarah Jane was the sister of Lizzie Hall, the wife of James Jr. “Jim” Rowe.  At the time of the 1920 Walton County census, Fred was living in the Lindleys district (158-14b) nest to Ollie and Eula Rowe Johnson, Henry and Effie Rowe Woodruff, and Tom and Mamie Smith.  Fred is buried between Sarah and Nellie at Mtn. Creek Cem near Monroe.  Sarah and Fred had the following children:

 Robert J. Rowe, oldest son of Thomas and Mary (Smare) Rowe, was born circa 1830 in Richmond Co, GA(?) and died circa 1862.  Robert married Oct 5,1854 (Richmond Co, GA) Rebecca C. Hood (born circa 1833 - died ?) Rebecca was the daughter of Benjamin and Susan “Ann” Barlow Hood and is thought to have been the sister of Mary Ann (Hood ?) Walker Rowe, the wife of James Rowe (see Chapter 2).  Both are buried in the Rowe Family Cem. at Fort Gordon (#22).  At the time of the 1860 Richmond County census, a Sibby A. Inglett (age 18), a serving girl, was living with Robert and Rebecca.  Also living with them was a Jackson Hood (age 19), a laborer.  This Jackson Hood was probably a relative of Rebecca.  The connection to Sibby A. Inglett is unknown.  When Robert J. Rowe died, George W. Hood and James Cawley were appointed guardians of Robert's children, Elizabeth and Richard.  Rebecca C. Hood-Rowe married 2nd Jan 11, 1864 (Richmond Co, GA) James Cawley.   James Cawley died Apr 25, 1872.  Rebecca and James Cawley had Amos H, Deliliah “Lilia”, Sarah “Sallie” W., Scrap, and Rachel Cawley.  Rebecca C.
