Potluck, bring dishes to share - plates and utensils provided
For descendants of John Hiram Hurst and Piety Stewart Hurst, and related families including Swearingen, Maddox, Perry, Davis, Alday, Williams, Batchelor, and Scharber/Sharber. Piety's Swearingen ancestors settled Jackson Co. FL before 1830, and she wed Hiram Hurst there in 1852. Piety, widowed by John's death at the Siege of Petersburg during the Civil War, moved to then-Decatur Co. before 1880 to farm there. The Hursts and their relations farmed and/or lived mostly in the Iron City area, which is now in Seminole Co.
John and Piety's children are:
Franklin P. Hurst (m. Emerline Maddox)
Ella Elizabeth Hurst (m. John Wesley Scharber/Sharber)
Spencer Robert Hurst (m. Hattie S. Perry)
Hiram Hurst (m. Ada Ann Davis)
The preceding Friday we will visit cemeteries, starting with Piety Stewart Hurst's burial place at Bethany Baptist Cemetery, between Bainbridge and Iron City (Piety lived 1830-1899); the rest of the cemeteries are in the immediate Iron City area. Some of the cemeteries are associated with longtime family churches.
