The McBryde family setteled in Talbot Co in 1832 and stagecoach passengers rested at McBryde's stop years before Geneva was a town. The house is in the 16th Land Dist, Geneva GMD 889, on the east side of US Highway 80, about five and one half miles south of Talbottom. It is opposite the intersection of Copagee Road (correctly, Koockogey Rd) with the highway, on a considerable embankment. Across the highway from the front of the house, at the side of Koockogey Rd., many of the McBrydes are buried in their family cemetery. Head stone for Robert McBryde gives birth and death dates with the inscription "Erected to the memory of an indulgent husband and father by his wife and children" Taken from History of Hope Hull Hammock. "Hope Hull Hammock of Geneva, built a cotton warehouse. Several thousand bales of the cotton were stored there at the beginning of the Civil War. During the great fire of 24 Mar 1865 in Geneva the only store left standing was the Warehouse of W. R. Moore and H.H Hammock's which was down in the "bottom" and escaped the fire. Thousands of Bales of cotton burned for days and all the other warehouses were lost. However, on 16 Apr. 1865 the Union took over and spared, for some reason,W. R. Moore's store, but they torched H.H.Hammock's Warehouse and cotton.
Data from 1850 GA census-He and his family lived next door to Lewis McBRYDE-McBRIDE at that time. Prop. value $5,600. Marriage listed in Book A Talbot Co GA. Geneva neared the end of antebellum development when the McBryde House was built in 1859.
John T McBryde lived there in 1860, when he was 41, a planter with $2,500 of real estate and $5,025 of personal estate. His wife, Gracey E McBryde, was 35. They were born in GA. It was the home of the John T McBryde family for more than 90 years.""Torn down several years ago, the McBryde house site is on School House Rd, adjoining the Cook-Ligon-Hildreth homeplace on the north and east.
McBryde plantation lands attrached to the house lot were several hundred acres as late as 1930.
East of the Bennett House, McBryde lands were reached by an old plantation road. Along the road were several cabins, some former slave quarters. Easter Howard, cook for about 30 years at the McBryde house, lived on one of them. A cabin in the back yard of the McBryde home was the dwelling of "Old Aunt Nan'" a former slave and family servant, until her death."

Taken from a bottle of OBAN label, a single malt West Highland Malt from Argyll Scotland. "The coastland of the gaelic people known as "Earra Gael" fell to the dreaded Viking overlordship in the middle of the eight cenury when their rule was at its harshest. It was then that the warrior King Somerled Mac Gillibride became foremost in Oban history. Part Viking, part Celt, he rallied his repressed and despairing countrymen leading them towards a new and lasting freedom from their oppressors. His spirit is said to live upon the precipitous crag of Dun Ollaigh which for centuries has been the descendants of his son and heir Dougall mac Tomhairlie the founder of the great CLAN MACDOUGALL" Explanation of meaning--nothing except Mac Gillibride is early use of McBride in Scotland which came from Ireland. (TJM) 12 Nov 1850

T. J. McBryde William J. McBryde The following letter was sent to the National Archivs and Records Admisistration -700 Pennsylvania Ave. NW - Washington DC. 20408-0001 about Oct 28, 1998.
My gg-grandfather ROBERT H. MCBRYDE (MCBRIDE) had two service hitches in war of 1812. Can or would anyone please tell me where go to get data on his enlistment. In both cases it appears the he was a substitute for someone else. The following are the details: 1. Robert H. McBryde (McBride) was mustered into service at Camp Hope, Jones Co., GA, 1 Aug 1812, for 6 montha as a private in Company of drafted men commanded by Capt. William Butler. Robert was discharged at Fort Hawkins, GA 1 Feb 1813. Robert is reported to have been a substitute for Mordecai Jacobs for this service. 2. Robert H McBryde (McBride) again served as a substitute for John Mullins in the Company of drafted men under Capt. William Huckaby, in the Regiment commanded by Col. Ezekiel Wimberly. Robert substituted and was mustered into Fort Hawkins GA on or about 1 Sep 1814 for six months. He was discharged at Darien GA about 1 Mar 1815. Robert H. McBryde was b 11 Feb 1797 and m Rebecca M. Hammock in Jones Co. GA in 1817. Thus all of the periods of service was before his marriage. Therefore, there is a small hope there might be a record of his next of kin in some of his service records. Thank you. Tom Thomas J. McBryde

The following , from "Deaths and Burials in the Columbus GA Enquirer, 1832-1872 pg 174: Goolsby, Mr (40-45) stabbed; had been in a fight with Mansfield McBride; Frank McBride was a witness (15 June 1886)" Data furnished by Mrs John H Woodall-P O Box 97-Woodland GA 31836. This could be Mancel because the McBryde spelling was in transition at this time from McBride. Mancel's father spelled his name McBride at times. The Frank McBride could be Mancel's son Franklin N. McBryde. Per Talbot Co., GA court records. Mancel was made guardian of Gracy Barnes, orphan of John J Barnes on 23 Jan 1857.

As a matter of interest almost all of Mancel's brothers and sisters were named after names carried down through the Hammock lines. Mancell name comes from the Hammack and Middleton marriages in VA and on back to England. The Middletons intermarried with the Mansells in England, and brought the name to America with their children. McBRYDE CEMETERY (Historical Marker) Mancel T McBryde (1821-1896) who brought his family here from Georgia in the early 1860's began this family cemetery in 1885 upon the death of his wife, Jane W Gore McBryde (1826-1885). A Farmer and Rancher, McBryde selected a site south of his family's home on which to bury his wife. The McBrydes had eight children, four of whom married into the Hoover Family. McBryde and Hoover descendants are also interred here. The burials facing east. The oldest McBryde family graves are enclosed in stone. The McBryde cemetery is maintained by descendants. Ding Dong is on the Lampasas River eight miles south of Killeen in southwestern Bell County. In 1979 it had a church and several scattered dwellings, and in 1990 it had a population of twenty-two. Mark Odintz From Texas Handbook. The old Mancel T McBryde home (still standing -1996) and ranch is currently known as the C. W Duncan Ranch. The home is reported to be visable from the Cemetery. (TJM) MAXDALE, TEXAS (Historical Marker) "Maxdale is located about 13 miles southwest of Killeen, along the Lampasas River, where several creeks join and flow into the Lampasas River. The first family in the community was that of Mancel Theodore McBryde, who came from Georgia and settled in the valley about 1861. The community, about 10 miles long and 3 miles to 4 miles wide, stretched along both sides of the river between two ridges. Much of the land which became the Maxdale community was part of a grant to Charles K Resse for his service in the Texas War for Independence. During the early days, the community was called Pleasant Grove because of the groves of live oak trees, but when Frank McBryde, Sr. applied for a post office for the community the name Pleasant Grove was already being used. The Postal Authorities changed the name to Mc's Dale, after the McBrydes, but with the opening of the post office, the name was changed to Maxdale. The Maxdale Post Office was opened with the appointment of John T Hunt of 20 June 1883. By postal records, Maxdale is one year younger than Killeen. Maxdale Post Office was discontinued on 30 June 1926, with the mail going to Killeen. Maxdale is largely a memory today, although the population has been increasing in recent years." Another Historical Marker in locate at 10th St, Killeen TX at the Squire McBryde's home. This is a Sesquicentennial Marker. !Ransom McBride caught me on a mistake as to place of birth of Mancel Theodore B McBryde. "Mancel was born 7 July 1821, but not in Talbot Co. GA. Talbot Co was not formed until December 1827 from Muscogee Co. Muscogee Co was created in June 1825 from Indian lands. Mancel's father was in Jones Co GA in 1820 and received land in Early Co GA in the 1820 Georgia Land Lottery. Mancel's father was on the move, so its difficult to say where he was when Mancel was born". But the best guess is in GA. (TJM)

McBRYDE OR DING DONG CEMETERY-BELL CO. TX
HISTORY OF McBRYDE CEMETERY by POLLY PEAKS ELMORE, 11 September 1988
Mansel T. and Jane W. Goar McBryde were married 8 September 1844. They came to Texas from Georgia with their children. Who were: Thomas J. McBryde married Fanny Gray; Franklin N. McBryde married Mary Hoover; Mary E. McBryde married J. P. Hoover; Adaline E. McBryde married John W. Hoover; Josephine McBryde married W. E. Bruce; Artea McBryde, died at birth (4 October 1858); Robert H. McBryde married Paralee Story; and Jane W. McBryde married Yancy Hoover. On the 1st day of February 1875, Mansel T. McBryde paid the sum of One thousand American gold dollars to J. G. Hunt for 320 acreas on the Lampasas River. They settled on this land and engaged in stock farming and land investments. Squire McBryde, as he was know to his peers, acquired this title because of the vast land holdings. Squire Mancel T. McBryde from Killeen or West Bell County was the peer to Joseph Dennis (Bell County or Temple). M. T. McBryde has only recently been written about and recorded in West Bell County History; whereas, Joseph Dennis was noted years ago for being the Chairman of the Committee who cut Bell County out of the tract of Milam County. To show the family ties of the McBryde's and Dennis families: Mancel T. McBryde - Joseph Dennis Josephine McBryde Bruce - Sarah T. (Sally) Dennis Elmore Adaline Elizabeth Bruce married James Thomas Elmore; bring their families together with the 3d generation. The McBryde family brought to Texas with them one male slave. They were one of only a few families in Bell County who brought with them a slave from the old Southern States. The Slave that the McBrydes brought to Texas with them died and they buried him in an unmarked grave. Not in the McBryde Cemetery. Gra'Delle Duncan shared with me (Polly Elmore) that there were several unmarked graves to the South line, just outside of fence, and they were those of a slave and several horse thieves. The McBryde Cemetery is the site that M. T. McBryde selected to bury his wife, Jane Goar McBryde, when she died on 31 August 1885. This is the first interment into the McBryde Cemetery. It was a common practice in the 1800s when a family member died to select a plot on the land they lived and owned to bury their love ones and start a family cemetery. Squire McBryde died in his home which overlooks the cemetery. Mancel T. McBryde is buried by the side of his wife. Since that date there have been 11 additional interments of family members and descendants. The name McBRYDE CEMETERY and the designation of 1/2 HALF ACRE for the size of the cemetery is recorded in the legal deed and located in Bell County Court House. When there is a grave and headstone, then the plot of land automatically belongs to the State of Texas. No family or family member owns the Cemetery because of the Public Law of Texas. Because of funding, the State of Texas depends on family members or interested parties to keep the Cemetery in good repair. No descendant has the right to be buried in the McBryde Cemetery without the expressed approval from Judge Duncan and his sister Gra'Dell Duncan. I would like to express thanks and appreciation to Gra'Delle and Judge Duncan for permitting me to apply for a Texas Historical Marker for this Cemetery. Thanks to Sally Walden, Gra'Delle Duncan, Ruth Elizabeth Caffey, Vera Hays, and Zelma Rhoades for being my Co-Sponsors for helping me pay for this Marker.

LEGEND OF BURIED GOLD COINS AT MCBRYDE'S CROSSING LIVES ON
The legend of a pot of gold coins at the McBryde's Crossing on the Lampasas River has led to much digging in the river bank over the years. Tales of the buried Spanish explorer Gen. Francisco Vazques de Coronado passed through the Bell County area in 1540s and others followed according to "The Story of Bell County Texas." At McBryde's Crossing, the story goes a man walked across the low-water Crossing, then sat on the pot of gold to pt his boots back on. History does not asy who found it or how many coins it contained. A lot of people have dug around the river bottom looking for gold in 1920s and earlier, but I don't think they ever found anything. says Elizabeth Bigham, who grew up nearby, They have dug all up and down the Lampasas River. McBryde's Crossing has been the site of other treasures and trials, like its Ding Dong Fame in "Rippley's Believe It or Not" The river crossing was named after Mancel Theodore McBryde (1821-1896), who brought his wife Jane, and family from GA in 1861. They settled in the area between Youngsport and Maxdale (then called Pleasant Grove). When applying for a post office in 1880s, another town had the Pleasant Grove name, so application was made for Mac's Dale" in honor of McBryde. The post office was opened in 1883 and the name was changed to Maxdale according to "The Story of Bell County, TX" The original McBryde rock house is the oldest existing structure in the county, according to a pamplet published by the Bell Co. TX Museum. It is on private land, but visible from State Highway 195.
