Charles L. Dupree was born in Alabama in 1841. His father (William S. Dupree)
died between 1840-1850 because he showed up in Cherokee county, Alabama on the
1840 census and did not show up in the census with the family in Murray county,
Georgia in 1850. I haven't been able to find out how he died. There is a story
in our family that after William's father died, Charles ran away to Dalton,
Georgia to join the Confederate Army. He was too young to enlist and the Army
found out he was underage, so his Mother Ann had to sign for him to enlist.
Later, Chas L. Dupree completed an application for Relief of Confederate
Soldiers and Sailors. This document indicates that he was residing in Jefferson
County Alabama and 62 years of age. It indicates that he was a Corporal and
enlisted the Company E of the 3 Georgia Regiment on March 2,1861. He was
honorably discharged on April 26, 1865. He was wounded at Thoroughfare Gap at
Manassas, State of Virginia. He owned 80 acres of land in Blount County Alabama,
according to land patent information. He died in October 28,1915 and is buried
in Bethany Baptist Church cemetery in Reeseville, Etowah county, Alabama with
his wife Laura Missouri Reese.
Charles' father was William S. Dupree and mother was Ann ????. Wm. died before
1850 and Ann moved back to Murray County Georgia with the children by 1850. In
1860, she showed up with the children in Whitfield County, GA. On a land
transfer in Cherokee county, Al, Ann indicated that she was selling land bought
with her dowry by her late husband deceased William S. Dupree to Charles S.
Dupree. (Not sure if the 2 Dupree's were related.) I have this documentation.
Witnesses for the land transfer were John Howard and David Delk. Not sure if
these guys were relatives of hers. This land transfer was written on December
29, 1851. This document indicated that Ann was "of the county of Murray county,
GA."
