Born 15 Aug 1791, Woodford County, KY; Died 10 July 1875, Dalton, Whitfield County GA.

Son of William and Lucy Ann (Marshall) Green

Buried West Hill Cemetery, Dalton County GA

Paternal great grandfather was Robert Green, who left seven sons: William, Robert, Duff, John, Nicholas, James and Moses.  He came with his cousin Sir William Duff and a Mr Hite and they were owners of large tracts of choice land, some situated on James River and others in the Shenandoah valley.  Duff Green's grandfather was Duff Green, who married first to a Miss Barbour who died leaving a son and a daughter John and Elizabeth.  The elder Duff Green then married a sister of Col Lewis Willis of Fredericksburg.  She had sons Willis, Henry and WiIlliam and one daughter Eleanor.  Their son William was Duff's father and was a volunteer in the Army of the American Revolution and when he was 15 years old was with Morgan in the battle of Cowpens. 

His maternal grandfather was Markham Marshall who married Ann Bailey.  They resided on the Shenandoah until his mother - their second child was about

10 years old.  They moved to Kentucky in the fall of 1779, settling near Knob Lick in Lincoln County.  William Green married Lucy Ann Marshall and settled in Woodford County until Duff was about 14 years old.  They moved to land on the Cumberland river in Wayne County.  His parents were both members of

the Baptist Church.

 

On 15 Aug 1812 Duff was mustered into the army by General Harrison, under William P Duval's volunteer company.  His regiment was under the command of Col Wilcox.  They marched to the relief of Fort Harrison.  He was later appointed as a Col in the Militia

 

Duff Green married Lucretia Maria Edwards, (1792-1863) who was the daughter of Benjamin Edwards and Margaret, daughter of Ninian Beall of Montgomery Co Maryland on 25 Nov 1813, Nelson Co KY

 

 

He was a real estate promoter and speculator.  He moved to Missouri in 1816 and established a large mercantile business, studied law, participated in

state politics and engaged in land speculation.  He was the editor of the St Louis Enquirer from 1823 to 1825.  He also was the editor of the US Daily

Telegraph.  He was a member of Andrew Jackson's "kitchen cabinet" until 1831 when he split with President Jackson and aligned himself with John C

Calhoun.  He supported the annexation of Texas and was appointed US consul at Galveston in 1844.  He tried to get the passage of a bill by the

Texas Congress establishing the Texas Land Company and the Del Norte Company.  These companies, aided by a Texas army and Indians from

the US occupied and claimed some northern provinces of Mexico for Texas.  Duff Green offered President Anson Jones stock in proposed companies

if he would support the plan.  Jones refused and Green allegedly threatened to start a revolution and overthrow the Jones administration.  December 30,

1844 Jones gave Green his passport and barred him from Texas as a consular official.  After the Mexican War Green promoted coal, iron and

railway projects in the South.  In 1865 he organized the Sabine and Rio Grande Railroad. 

 

Ann Laura Green,  (1814, Missouri-1873, Dalton, Whitfield County, GA) buried West Hill Cemetery, Dalton, Whitfield County, GA married Isaac Shelby Reed, Esq of Mississippi before 4 July 1832, Washington DC when marriage was published Columbian Centinel 4 July 1832, MA.

 

Margaret Maria Green,  (18 Feb 1816, Woolford Co KY- 27 July1891, Clemson SC) she married Col Andrew Pickens Calhoun

 

Eliza "Lizzie" M Green, (1821, Missouri-1895, Dalton, Whitfield County GA) married a physician, Albert Washington Bivings 24 Dec 1877, Whitfield County GA (his second marriage, her first marriage).  He was born 21 Aug 1819, Lincoln Co NC; died 21 Dec 1881, Dalton)  They are buried at West Hill Cemetery, Dalton, Whitfield County GA

Mary Eleanor Green, (born ca Aug 1824-1826, Missouri; died bet 1880-1900) married Lafayette Maynard (he was born ca 1818, Virginia, died possibly Tacoma Washington after 1900); had children: Ella, Ben G, Constance, Lizzie, Sadie, Robert, Duff Green.  

Duff Cyrus Green, (14 July 1828, Virginia-9 Nov 1865, Mobile Co AL) Buried Mesopotamia Cemetery, Green Co AL.  Married Rebecca Pickens (1833-1916). Had son Duff Edwards Green (1856-1885) and daughter Caroline Green Noble.  He was a cadet at the Military academy 1844-1849, promoted to Bvt second LT, 5th Infantry, 1849.  He resigned Dec 31, 1856 due to ill health having contracted survy and rheumatism and became a cotton factor in Mobile AL.  He joined Co K, St of Alabama Army and became Brig General and Quartermaster.  He was a prisoner of War 13 Mar 1865, signed at Gainesville AL.  He was pardoned 1 Sept 1865 by Andrew Johnson.

 

 

Floride Edwards Green (1835, Washington DC-1890) unmarried, buried West Hill Cemetery, Dalton, Whitfield County GA.
