Erwin/Ervin R.  Helton (son of James C. Helton and Camilla Southerland)

Born: 20 Feb 1831, Georgia (this birth date is from the Indian Applications of his two sisters which listed his date of birth. 1860 census indicates he was born ca 1828 in GA)

Married: Nancy Duncan,  18 May1852, Whitfield Co GA.  Nancy was born August 27, 1839/1840, South Carolina, daughter of Robert Duncan and Melinda "Millia" Elrod.  Nancy died Jan 3, 1923, Greenville, Hunt Co, TX (Nancy is said to be Indian by descendants of James' son John - if so it had to come through the Elrod’s as Robert Duncan's father came from Ireland)

Died: 13 May 1870, probably GA - possibly Walker Co GA. (Source is also from the two Indian Applications of his siblings, no location given) For certain, he is not in the household with Nancy and children in 1870.

Civil War: E. R. Helton was in the Company G, 26th TN Regiment. He enlisted at Knoxville TN July 12, 1861 by James W Gillespie as a Private.   Present at musters in October 1861 to June 1862. Last paid by Major Davis Nov 8, 1861.  He was a Prisoner of War from Ft. Donelson TN on roll at Fort Morton in Indiana June, 1862, August 27, 1862.  Most of this regiment was captured Fort Donelson TN Feb 16, 1862; released at Vicksburg Mississippi, Sept 1862. Endorsement shows Rec’d the foregoing list of prisoners of war: 990 men, N G Watts Major CSA and Agent for exchange of prisoners.  He was on board steamer Champion near Vicksburg MS Sept 11, 1862.  This regiment was transferred to Co K; 1st Confederate Regiment GA Volunteers after they were released from Fort Morton.  Muster for December 31, 1862 says he is absent sick furlough at home in Catoosa Co GA.  Last paid by Major Jackson June 1862. January/February 1863 (dated Feb 28, 1863) muster roll shows he is absent without leave. March/April 1863 (dated April 30, 1863) roll shows him present. May 17, 1863 he is discharged for disability - does not mention type of disability.  Register of Payments to Discharged Soldiers, date of discharge July 3, 1863, date of payment July 3, 1863 by T W Crocker.
