George W Blanton, physician and surgeon, was born in Whitfield County, GA in March, 1859. His parents were J. A. and Sarah (Crow) Blanton, the father from North Carolina, the mother from Georgia. The father was a merchant and contractor and took no part in politics. His is still living in Chattanooga. The mother died in 1864. Both parents were members of the Baptist Church.
The father's second marriage was to Mrs F D Blanton, widow of Dr Joseph Blanton, who was killed in a trench near Atlanta in 1864 by a shell. He was acting captain and giving a command at the time. By his first marriage Mr Blanton had three children, viz: George W; Charles (died at the age of one year) and William (died at the age of two years). Mr Blanton served during the entire war except eight months, which time he was absent owing to shot in the left lung, which injury still troubles him. On recovering he returned and served until the close of the war. He chose Longstreet's Division, Phillips Legion Infantry. he went out with the Old Dalton Guards and remained with them until only eight were left. On returning he was at Longstreet's quarters and served as carrier on horseback. He was captured three times, and as many times made good his escape. He took part in the Manassas battles, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, and many other fights. He surrendered at Appomattox with Lee.
On returning he resumed merchandising and contracting, which he still continues. The children by the second marriage are Talulah, Emmett and Mary. The oldest is now junior in the college at Chattanooga.
Our subject graduated in medicine 1879 at Atlanta Medical College. He began that same year to practice at Dalton, and continued there one year, then located in Eastman four years, then Chattanooga one year; settled in Chauncey in 1885 where his success has been very good.
He was married in 1879 to Miss Ella C, daughter of Col Alexander S Atkinson, of Cobb County, GA. Three children bless the Doctor's home, namely: Mary L, Ella M and Jacob A Jr. Both parents are members of the Baptist Church. The Doctor has been physician and surgeon for the E.R..VA and GA RR for the past two years. He also acts in the same capacity for the U&MRR.
He is a good physician and deservedly popular citizen. His easy and courteous manners make for him a large and increasing circle of valued friends.
