Alexander T Coryell was born in Campbell County, GA, February 25, 1842. his father, Joseph H, was born in New Jersey. He came to Georgia at an early date and accumulated large property. He carried on an extensive mercantile business at Sandtown, GA for many years and was also largely engaged in the tanning business, and the manufacture of boots and shoes at that place. He was a large slave holder and carried on planting largely. He afterward, in 1861, moved to Whitfield County, GA. where he lived and died. His wife was Emma R Gan, a native of Georgia. She bore him five children, viz: Alexander T, Cora A, Edward G, Joseph R and Howard G.
Our subject was brought up and educated in Campbell County, GA and in early life devoted his time to the farm and the tannery. In 1861 he moved with his parents to Whitfield County, and in the same year joined the Confederate Army as a private in Company G, of the Eleventh Georgia Infantry, but was soon promoted to sergeant and served in that capacity until the close of the war. He then engaged in the boot and shoe business at Marietta which he continued until 1881, when he was elected sheriff of Cobb County, and has held that office ever since. He has been a faithful performer of his duties of office. He is a gentleman in every respect and very popular among his people. He is a member if IOOF and in politics is a Democrat.
