Receipt roll for clothing - date of issue Nov 21, 1862.
On muster roll March 1 to October 31, 1863.
POW, paroled at Vicksburg MS. Roll dated at Headquarters US Paroling Office
Vicksburg MS dated July 8, 1863. Shows he was captured at Vicksburg July 4,
1863. Gave oath that he would not take up arms against US, nor serve in the
military.
Appears on a list of effective of the 39th Regmt and furloughed at Enterprise
MS July 22, 1863.
Absent without leave July 28, 1863.
Company muster roll Sept-Oct 1863 shows he is absent without leave since
Aug 28, 1863.
Union: Fifth Mounted Infantry. Samuel is on a muster list 17 July 1865, as was Berry.
This regiment was recruited and organized Sept 1864 at Cleveland, by Col. Boyd and
Lieut.-Col. Beard. It was chiefly engaged in scouting through lower East Tennessee,
northern Georgia, western North Carolina and northern Alabama. It had frequent
encounters with Gatewood's and other guerrillas, one of which occurred at Spring
Place, GA, and another at Ducktown, Polk County, Tenn. The regiment was mustered

CSA: Berry enlisted 10 Mar 1862, resided in Murray Co GA. CSA Co B, 39 GA Inf Regmt
Enlisted March 10, 1862, Dalton GA for 3 years or duration of War, paid by
Maj Ayre Dalton.
Bounty payroll $50 for re-enlisting, March 28, 1862 at Camp McDonald.
Receipt roll for clothing - date of issue Nov 2, 1862.

Aug 28, 1863.
(**I suspect Berry was captured at Vicksburg as Samuel was. If so, it would
explain why he was absent without leave as Samuel swore that he would not
take up arms against the U.S.)

CSA: Civil War service record: Private, Co A, 34th Regiment of Georgia Infantry. Volunteered May 15 at Dalton GA for 3 years.
Captured at Vicksburg July 4, 1863 and was on a list of those prisoners of war that were paroled July 10, 1863. Took oath
that he would not take up arms against the US July 10, 1863. I do not see anymore on him after that in Confederate or Union records.

Mary onto wife Rebecca’s name and then skipped Mary all together.
Rebecca had 6 children, 3 of whom survived.

21 Nov 1901,Bradley Co TN (license 22 Nov 1901 Bradley Co TN). (Addie L. was born 17 Sept 1873 and died 26 May 1976 per
headstone-Flint Springs.) He died 17 April 1938, Cleveland, Bradley Co TN, buried 19 April 1938 Flint Springs Cemetery.
