By Jesse P Freeman, Ordinary, of Whitfield County to James James, Johnson Warmac, Riley Garrett, McFalls Leadford and James Bryant. These are to authorize and empower you or any three of you whose names are written above to attend at the late residence of Alford Johnson deceased and assess and set apart out of the estate of said deceased support and maintenance sufficient for the use of the widow and children a sufficient amount of the household furniture. Witness my hand and official signature this 2 Dec 1865, J P Freeman, Ordinary.
We the undersigned appraisers appointed by the ordinary of said county to assess the 12 months allowance for the widow and 7 minor children of Alford Johnson, late of said county deceased have assessed as the sum necessary for their support and maintenance for 12 months $800.00 and as Mrs Elizabeth Johnson, widow of the said deceased has the care of the children of said deceased and has selected the following articles belonging to the estate of said deceased we have set apart the sum for the use of herself and children at the following appraised value:
10 pork hogs valued at $1,800.00
8 bushels corn more or less $8.00
2 pigs $2.00
12 bushels wheat more or less $24.00
1 yoke of oxen $40.00
1 woodwork of a two horse wagon $15.00
1 small lot of farming tools $3.00
balance cash $528.00
And we have set apart for the use of the widow and children of said deceased the whole of the household furniture including beds and furniture and all the kitchen and dresser ware, etc. Witness our hands and seals this 6th day of December 1865.
