Walker County, GA.  Court of Ordinary, February term, 1853.  Court met according to adjoinment present James Hoge, Ordinary for Walker

County.  Personally appeared Jacob Stroup who being duly sworn says he saw Valentine Harlan sign, seal and declare and publish the instrument

no presented.

I, Valentine Harlan, infirm of body, but sound of mind and memory and feeling the uncertainty of life, and knowing the certainty of death do make

and ordain the following to be my last will and testament.

Item 1st. I commit my soul to God who gave it and my body to the earth whence it came, desiring my executors to give it a decent burial.

Item 2nd. It is my desire that my beloved wife Milley Harlan should live in one of the rooms of the house which I have recently built for a swelling for

and during her natural life and five negroes to wit: Charles and Cris his wife and Mary Ann their child, Chamey and her son Moses.  I wish her to

keep with her until Mary Jane Harlan becomes of age at which time I wish three of them to wit Chamey and Moses and Mary Ann to be sold for

the benefit of my heirs and the remaining two Charles and Cris I wise to remain with her during her life to be disposed of at her death.  I also desire

 her to live on and retain possession of the improved land on the lot on which my dwelling house stands on and the lot adjoining it below during her life.

Item 3rd. I do give and bequeath unto Sarah White and the heirs of her body $300.

Item 4th. I do give and bequeath to the children of James Harland and Elizabeth Harlan his wife $300 in addition to what I have given them before.

Item 5th. I do give and bequeath unto Samuel Harlan $540.00 in addition to what I have given them before.

Item 6th: I do give and bequeath unto M. Ann E. Fulton and the heirs of her body $204.00 in addition to what I have given her.

Item 7th: I do give and bequeath unto Leila (or Julia) Ann Bryan and the heirs of her body $5.00 in addition to what I have heretofore given her.

Item 8th. I do give and bequeath unto Joshua Harlan $5.00 in addition to what I have him.

Item 9th. I do give and bequeath unto Joseph Harlan $5.00 in addition to what I already gave him.

Item 10th.  I do give and bequeath unto Isaiah Harlan $5.00 in addition to what I already gave him.

Item 11: I do give and bequeath unto Mary Jane Harlan $630.00 in addition to what I already gave her.

Item 12: I do give and bequeath unto George Harlan $5.00 in addition to what I heretofore given him.

Item 13: I do give and bequeath unto Aaron Harlan if he is alive or should ever apply for it a negro boy named Moses and $60.00 to be paid out

of my personal estate.

Item 14: I do give and bequeath to Martha Dunnagan and the heirs of her body $340.00 in addition to what I have heretofore given her.

Item 15: It is my desire that all the stock consisting of horses, cattle, hogs, sheep etc should remain with my wife Milly Harlan with the increase there

during her life and at her death disposed of for the benefit of my heirs.  i also desire that all my lands that are indisposed of should be sold as soon

as practicable after my death and the proceeds of the same applied to the payment of the bequests contained in this my last will and testament.

Item 16: It is my desire that my son Joshua Harlan, John Dunnagan and Henry C Bryan shall be and I do hereby appoint them jointly executors of

this my last will and testament.

In testimony whereof I do herewith set my hand and seal this 17th day of October 1843.  Valentine Harlan

Done in the presence of John Dunagan, Henry C Bryan, Adam Stroup.

Codicil  7 Oct 1843:

In addition to the foregoing I add the following to Item 2: shall remain as it is during the widowhood of my wife,  should she marry that all the

personal property which I have left her be disposed of for the benefit of my heirs. Oct 7, 1843.

Codicil 17 Oct 1843:

1st I revoke and annul the 13th item and do hereby give and bequeath to the children of Aaron Harlan the sum of $463.45 to be paid to them by

my executors after my death. Oct 17, 1843.
