The Stephens Family of Chattahoochee County |
by Holli Jean (Boone) Kees
Great, Great, Great Granddaughter of Calvin Stephens and Martha Saffold
CALVIN STEPHENS
Calvin Stephens was born the 8th of May 1808 in North Carolina. Nothing is known of his
parents or siblings as of this date, but research is still going on to determine this. He
married Martha Mariah Saffold before 1830. Martha was the daughter of Isham H. Saffold of
Washington County Georgia and the Granddaughter of William Saffold and Temperance Shore.
Martha was born in July of 1803 in Washington County Georgia. Martha is known to have had
two sibling, Adam Saffold and Sarah (Saffold) Brady/McBride and possibly a third Daniel
Saffold.
Calvin and Martha had a very large family of 9 children. All the children were born and
raised in Chattahoochee County. Below is what is know by this researcher about them.
SARAH KATHERINE STEPHENS
Sarah Katherine Stephens was born the 18th of September 1830. Nothing is known about her
except that she died in 1851.
JOEL STEPHENS
Joel Stephens was born the 20th February 1832 and died in Chattahoochee County on the 23
February 1903. Nothing further is known about him.
ROSANNAH ELIZABETH STEPHENS
Rosannah Elizabeth Stephens was born the 8th of April 1833 and died 8th of October 1870.
Nothing further is known about her.
MARTHA MARIAL STEPHENS
Martha Marial Stephens was born the 27th of January 1836 and died the 14th of April 1871.
Nothing further is known about her.
PETER STEPHENS
Peter Stephens was born the 19th of July 1837 and died after 1910 in Texas. He married
Savannah Cassandra Bush, daughter of Thomas Bush and (H)Epsey Ann Watkins. One reference
said they were married in Muscogee County Georgia like her parents were, but no reference
has been found yet.
Peter and Savannah lived in the Gobblers Hill District on the 1870 Census. On the
Roster of Confederate Soldiers, Peter served in the Chattahoochee Sentinels, Company D,
46th Regiment of the Georgia Volunteer Infantry as a Private under Captain Elijah Grout
Raiford. He served from March 4, 1862 to May 4, 1862 and furnished Charles H. Baggett as a
substitute.
Peter once owned a plantation near Renfroe, but removed to Webster County with his in-laws
in the Harris District, which eventually became part of Chattahoochee County.
Peter and Savannah had one daughter that this researcher knows of, Annie Laura
Tressie Stephens. Tressie married John C. Boone, son of Jesse M.
Boon and Caroline Pierce of Stewart County Georgia on the 3rd of November 1878 in
Chattahoochee County. Tressie and John had four children while living in
Chattahoochee; Emmett Clyde Boone, Peter Stephens Boone, Cordie Mae Boone and Lottie Bell
Boone. As Cordie Mae was never heard of again, its assumed she died in infancy in
Chattahoochee County, Gobblers Hill District.
Tressie and John moved the remainder of their family to Cryer Creek, Navarro
County Texas between 1885 and 1890. Once in Texas, Tressie and John had
several more children; Pierce Boone, Annie Elizabeth Boone, Hatcher Boone, Ratcliffe
Boone, Daniel Boone and Robert Edward Boone. On the 6th of September 1900,
Tressie and Johns oldest daughter Lottie Bell died at Cryer Creek at the
age of 14, cause unknown, but believe to have been an epedemic as there were numerous
graves in the cemetery with the same or about the same date.
The family moved from Cryer Creek a few years after that and landed in Henderson County
where they remained until Tressies death in 1922-1923. John moved to
Kopperl, Bosque County with his son Daniel and his family, where he remained until his
death on the 1st of April 1944.
Tressie and Johns son, Peter Stephens Boone, named after his
Grandfather, was born on the 5th of February 1883 in Chattahoochee County, Gobbler
Hills District, and died the 23rd of December 1951 in Wichita Falls, Wichita County
Texas. He married Nellie Milvinie Honea, daughter of John Maney Honey, Jr. and Mary
Catherine Molly Melvina Kiser on the 10th of November 1912 in Cleburne, Johnson County
Texas. To Pete and Nellie were born three sons; Olney Floyd Boone born Kimbel Bend, Bosque
County Texas, Arles Edward Tot Boone born Rio Vista, Johnson County Texas and
Paul Hollis Boone.
Pete and Nellies son, Paul Hollis Boone was born in Cisco, Eastland County Texas in
1926 and married Johnnie Jean Mitchell, daughter of Bert Littleton Mitchell and Bonelyn
Loving, on the 9th of December 1950 in Dallas, Dallas County Texas. To them were born
three children; John Paul Boone, Holli Jean Boone and Kristi Lynelle Boone. All three were
born in Dallas, Dallas County Texas. Jean died in Eustace, Henderson County
Texas in 1993 where the family moved in the early 1980s.
What ever happen to Peter Stephens and his wife Savannah Cassandra Bush is a mystery
still. All that is known about them is that they left for Texas and was never heard from
again after 1910. This researcher has been told by another family member that a group of
six families left Chattahoochee County headed for Texas. Tressie and John were
one family, Johns sister, Mary Rosaline Ross Boone and her husband John
Opry and their children were another, Johns brother Jesse Thomas Boone was yet
another, and Im assuming that Peter and Savannah came with them making so far a
total of four families. John had other siblings, Vashti Melissa Boone and her husband John
S. Brewer stayed in Chattahoochee County, while his other sister Martha S. Boone and her
husband James Tennyson Wharton stayed in Stewart County Georgia. Johns other sister
Matilda died in her youth in Stewart County.
ROBERT STEPHENS
Robert Stephens was born the 5th of May 1839 and died in Virginia serving in the Civil War
in 1861. Nothing further is known about him.
MARY MITTIE STEPHENS
Mary Mittie Stephens was born the 3rd of September 1841 and died about 1936 in Ga. Nothing
further is known about her.
JOHN STEPHENS
John Stephens was born the 8th of January 1843 and died the 12th of February 1912 in
Chattahoochee County. John married Sallie Mozelle Patterson. John was listed as 28 years
old on the 1870 Census in Chattahoochee County. Nothing else is known about him.
CALVIN WASHINGTON STEPHENS
Calvin Washington Stephens was born the 14th of August 1845 and died in 1898 in
Chattahoochee County. He married Julia Averett and had one child that I know of, Curtis V.
Stephens from Renfroe. Nothing further is known about him.
A special thank you to Marion Cox and Ottis Gunn for their input into my
