PINE VIEW BAPTIST CHURCH
I am not sure of the location of this Church but since it
refers to
Blakely I have included it into this website
******************************************************************************************
Pine View Baptist Church was constituted August 14, 1893. The Presbytery
consisted of Mr. W. M. Howell, Dr. J. J. King, and Dr. W. C. Cleveland. The
Charter members were J. B. Turner, C. Hammond, Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Scarborough,
J. T. Scarborough, Mrs. Henry Nix, Mrs. A. J. White. Of this number Mr. Hammond,
Mr. Turner, and Mrs. J. T. Scarborough are living and active members of the
church today.
Since there was no church building, services were held in the school house for a
number of years. Early in 1898 the Minutes of the conferences show that the
members were receiving land committees and getting up money for the building of
the church. They selected the lot just across the road from the school house.
The members of the church and community did the work. As soon as possible the
congregation moved into its new building. The building is a small wooden house
which seats about 250 people. It is close to the road. The cemetery is back
about fifty yards from the road and probably that far from the church. The
property is valued at one thousand dollars now. A few years later the church was
painted and in 1911 the ceiling was completed. It was in 1926, during the
pastorship of W. E. Waterhouse that the Sunday School rooms were begun. Little
by little these rooms are being completed according to the original plan. There
are four of these rooms, two at the back and one on each side.
The first pastor of the church was the Rev. J. J. King of Blakley. In the fall
of 1894 Rev. J. G. Corley became pastor. He served the church until October 3,
1896 and then Rev. W. O. Crumbley of Blakely was pastor until September 1901. He
was followed by Rev. R. C. Pool of Damascus, Ga., who served for two or three
years. Then Rev. Jessie Rooks became pastor and served two or three years. Then
followed Rev. J. E. Dykes who served two years, Rev. E. T. Dawson, who was
pastor nine years and Rev. J. P. Sauls, who was pastor for some two or three
years. In the fall of 1923 Rev. R. E. Zachert came and served for two years.
Rev. W. E. Waterhous, who at that time a student at Mercer University, followed
Rev. Zachart and was pastor for two years. In the early part of 1928 Rev.
Zachart was called again and became pastor for another two years. He was
followed by Rev. Paul M. Sayer of Leary. Rev. Sayer resigned in October 1931.
Rev. W. E. Browne is the present pastor. It is interesting to note here that
Rev. Browne joined Pine View Church by letter while a boy and it was while a
member of this church that he felt his call to the Ministry. He was licensed in
Pine View Church and preached his first sermon there. Now after several years in
the work he has come back. Brother S. F. Sullivan was also ordained here April
1899.
When Pine View Church was organized the two deacons were C. Hammond and J. B.
Turner. These two are still giving their service to the church. Besides these
the present deacons are E. D. Hay, B. H. Thomas, J. T. Scarborough, J. W.
Anderson, Jim Martin, and J. W. Scarborough.
J. T. Scarborough was the first Clerk of the Church. He held this place for ten
or twelve years. Mr. E. D Hay is the present Clerk. Mr. C. Hammond was the first
Treasurer and W. C. Hay is the Treasurer now.
A Sunday School was organized about 1900. Mr. T. E. Fort was the first
Superintendent. He led the Sunday School for ten or twelve years. Other
Superintendents have been E. D. Hay, J. T. Scarborough and others whose names
are lost in a record book that cannot be found. Guyton McLendon is the present
superintendent. The Sunday School is small, but is filling a place of importance
in the community.
In 1918 Mrs. Wood Davis of Blakely and Mrs. Homer Hammack of Edison came down
and organized a W. M. S. However, it did not function much until the time of
Rev. Zachart's first pastorate. Mrs. R. R. McLendon, Miss Altha Fort, an Mrs. T.
E. Joiner have been presidents. In 1926 Miss Ida Rhoad, of the State W.M.U.
taught a study course and organized a Sunbeam Band, under the leadership of Miss
Mabel McLendon. At present the W.M.U. is not working.
Mr. John Underwood of Blakely organized the first B.Y.P.U. at Pine View in 1920.
Of course the B.Y.P.U. changes with the changes of the young people of the
community. Sometimes it is small with only two groups and sometimes it is large
with four groups in the Senior Union, and a flourishing Junior Union. Mr. Guyton
McLendon is the President of the Senior Union at this time and there is no
Junior Union.
The Pine View Baptist Church is a very important factor in the life of the
people. It has been the friend to old and a guide to the young.
