A TRIBUTE OF THANKS TO MRS. GOERTNER E. MUMFORD PARKHURST, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Sylvester Mumford
A NOTE OF THANKS FROM: Susie Lee Bell (Jacobs), Principal Hoboken Elementary School
After being award a Mumford Scholarship, I graduated from G.S.C.W. (Georgia
State College for Women at Milledgeville) in 1963, earning a B.S. Degree
in Home Economics Education with a minor in General Science. I
taught Vocational Home Economics for six years (three in Ft. Valley,
Georgia, and three at Waycross High School.
In 1971, I returned to Hoboken Elementary to teach third grade and to
pursue a Master's Degree in Elementary Education (grades 1-8) at
Valdosta State College. The Master's Degree was followed by an
Educational Specialist Degree in Elementary Education, and later another
Ed. Specialist in Leadership.
My experiences includes 20 years of class room teaching before becoming an
administrator. I was an assistant for five years before taking the
position of Principal at Hoboken. In June 2004, I will have
completed 38 years in public education, 32 of those years at Hoboken
Elementary.
Yes, these years of service were made possible by the Mumford Scholarship Fund.
Now, I feel that it is time to repay, if that is possible, for the
difference it has made in my life.
To do this, a group of us have met twice to discuss the possibility of
setting up a nonprofit organization to give back to the Brantley
County Schools what was given to us by the Mumford Foundation.
Our next meeting will be June 14 at 9 a.m. at the B.O.E. Hopefully,
more recipients will attend. We are looking for the names and
addresses of all recipients of the Mumford Scholarship in Brantley
County.
