Located
in a field east of Banks Dairy Road (unpaved as of mid-January 2000) about a
quarter mile south of the paved road (the “Metter Highway”) between Upper Lotts
Creek Church and Portal in Bulloch County, Georgia.
This list
of those buried in the Nichols family cemetery is based on a survey done on
September 22, 1968, by Lawrence M. Edwards, and witnessed by Walter C. Coward,
Jr., Notary Public, Chatham County. Here the names have been placed in
alphabetical order. Comments giving full names, where known, and indicating
relationships among many of those listed have been added. Corrections
and additions to the commentary would be most welcome.

He was the oldest child of Theophilus and Rebecca Crumpton Nichols.
There is an inscription that begins, “In the twinkling of an eye this

Theophilus, not Theopelus!
The tombstone very clearly says Theophilus. He was the husband
of Rebecca Crumpton Nichols. The inscription on his stone reads,
“His words were kindness, his deeds were love. His spirit humble, he
rests above.” He came to Georgia from North Carolina about 1820, and
after settling in Bulloch County became a large landowner and a respected
citizen who was opposed to slavery. |
