Bailey | Fern Poe Davidson | 1/10/2004 | Am searching for any information on the family of John D. Bailey. John was born ca. 1802, in S.C. He evidently lived there until maybe early 1830's. He had a son William A. Bailey that was born in 1824, and list S.C. as his birth state. Probably in the early 1830's this family migrated into the area that became Chattooga county. From information found on the buying and selling of property, and also the marriage of William A. Bailey to Melinda Whaley in Chattooga county, I expect this family lived here until late 1840's when they moved west. By early 1850's they are living in Conway county, Arkansas. John D. dies in 1866, in the neighboring Van Buren county. I would really like to know more about this family while living in Georgia. Will be happy to exchange any information I have. |
Bailey, Kinman | Susan Davis | 3/20/2005 |
I found where Louisa Kinman married my ancestor, William S. Bailey on December 31, 1848 in Chattooga Co, GA and his brother, John D. Bailey married Sarah O. McClung in 1849.One child is born in 1852 to William Bailey, Sr., and by 1860, William S. Bailey has moved to Arkansas and married to another woman, Caroline Hix/Hicks.Do you have a book in Chattooga Co, GA that would show an Obituary listing for Louisa Kinman Bailey about 1850-1855? Do you have a book that would show a birth record for William S. Bailey born 1852? Possibly the parent's names of this child? I've searched many of the Cemetery listings, but cannot locate a grave for Louisa. |

7/13/2007 Hello! Sterling Johnson (b abt 1811 NC) married Emily S Greathouse in Troup Co., GA in 1837. The family lived in Chattooga Co during the 1840 and 1850 census. Emily died before the 1850 census. Sterling died about 1852 leaving 3 orphans: Abram b 1836, George b 1841 and Julius b 1843 all b in GA. There is a lot of information regarding the Greathouse family. Unfortunately I have not found any clues to Sterling's ancestors. There are court records regarding guardianship of the children and a record of a repayment of a loan from Sterling's estate to his brother Iredell Johnston (b abt 1811 NC) who lived in Macon Co., AL at that time. I have not seen any of these personally but received the information from distant cousins who were researching this family. I have been told the children lived temporarily with an Eliza Johnson. Daniel Hicks, possibly related to Amos or Aaron Hicks, was administrator of the estate, Thomas Glass and W R Thornton may have been appointed as guardians. By the 1860 census the boys are all living in Alabama. Abram is living with Zera Gentry an elderly widow and George is living with W R Thornton both in Beat 9, Russell Co., AL. Julius is living in Southern Division, Macon Co., AL with his Uncle Iredell's brother in law, a Hoffman. Are any of these Chattooga Co records on line? I'd appreciate any suggestions! Debbi Johnston

Karr |
6/14/2007 I've been researching a family member for years. His name is Oliver Benjamin Karr. We called him OB Karr. The in the paperwork we've found his birth place doesn't seem consistent but one thing is for sure, most of the documents list Tryon, Ga as his birth. He was born January 21, 1887. The man was a musician by trade and travelled all over the US. I've not been able to find anything on him before his first marriage in Florida in 1914. Nothing in the census before 1920. His parents are listed as William Karr and wife Rachel Blakeley both of Georgia (later census' list b Alabama). Both of them never show up in any census from 1930 back to 1860, so I'm really stymied. Anyone having any clues please contact me. Thanks. Chris

His name is Hartwell Weathers (Hartwell Weathers parents (unknown to me at this time) married Mary Black (from SC and thought to be Native American). All the other kids were then born in the Chickamauga area. If you can help me as to where I should look or can help me in any other way I'd appreciate it. |

Whitton | Paula Mason | 4/6/2007 |
Hi, I'm searching for any info on the following families that lived in and around the Chattooga Co. area. First, I'm searching for any info on Sarah WHITTON(en) and her family, Sarah was found in the 1880 Chattooga Co. Census. She had the following children listed in her household. Beetie(Beadie-B.D.); Lee(Levi); George; Nellie(Melvina); and Beulah. Her other children not listed there with her were: Frances Amanda(Mandy); William H.(Bill); Susan and Mary. Most of her children were wed in Etowah Co., Al. with the exceptions of George, Susan and Mary. I do know that George and Levi Lee and their respective families ended up in Texas. I do believe her daughter, Susan, wed Millard BALLARD, and I am also looking for info on them as well. I'm glad for any help on these families. I would really love to know who Sarah was wed too and when she died. We have not found her listed with her spouse and this has been a puzzler in my family for many years. I do know that Sarah supposedly had consumption according to the 1880 census. I'm uncertain how long people lived with this back then, Also, I am interested in Newton and Simon Oliver, especially who their parents were and their siblings if known. Best of luck to all in their research. |
