Newmantown Road in Grovetown was given to Columbia County by our Family. We have 2 Family Cemeteries located on Newmantown Road:
The Newman-Blackstone Cemetery is a very Historical Cemetery for our Family and is located by the new ball park on Newmantown Road. Grovetown is now in the process of placing a fence around this cemetery because when they built the new park they accidently destroyed the graves except for a few so we have to try
to locate records and the graves to replace the stones.
I am listing a Family History so the Newman Family can have a history record for they are the largest family in Grovetown and probably Columbia County. Thomas William Newman was born in Northumberland, Pennsylvania about 1762. He enlisted in the North Carolina Regiment of Militia October 16, 1779 and upon discharge moved to Columbia County and settled in Grovetown, Georgia. Mary Blackstone was born in Northumberland Pennsylvania in 1765. She moved with her family to Columbia County in 1792. Thomas William Newman and Mary Blackstone were married on December 18th, 1792. This was the beginning of Newmantown. From generation to generation the Newman Families came to be. The William B. Newmans, Thomas Newmans, George Newmans, James Newmans, Oliver Newmans, Thomas Beck Newmans and the Osborn N. Newmans. Along this Newmantown Road lived all the families of Thomas and Mary Newman and many still live here today and many rest here today. Thomas William and Mary Blackstone Newman was buried in the Newman-Blackstone Cemetery. It is a very Historical Cemetery and I have requested that it be listed in the Columbia County Cemetery Records. The Newman Cemetery is also in Newmantown but it is already listed in the Columbia County GAGenWeb records. This was the other Newman Cemetery. |
