Holton/Dickson Family Bible
Virgil S. Holton - Anna Elizabeth Dickson family records in scrapbook circa 1870s-1907; record dates 1788-1907. Surnames included are: Hicks, Dickson, Holton, Fudge, McCook, Sanders, Smith, Griffin; transcribed by Gina Ruth Smith (Dodd), January 8-9, 2002 and June 2-3, 2004, in Crawford County, Georgia. This family has connections to Crawford County, Georgia and Bibb County, Georgia. Crawford County marriage records listed at http://www.usgennet.org/usa/ga/county/crawford/Marriages/marriagerecs.htm reference this marriage as occurring on November 2, 1876 . (After Virgil S. Holton's death, Anna Elizabeth Dickson Holton married William J. Dent--I believe as his second wife. See their December 12, 1887, marriage record listed at the same site.)
Note from transcriber: The family records below are contained in a scrapbook (in my possession in June 2004) compiled, it appears, by Virgil S. Holton and his wife, Anna Elizabeth Dickson Holton (later Dent). Along with handwritten family records transcribed below, the scrapbook also contains newspaper clippings of various types and some additional handwritten (several apparently in pencil) items, some of which are faded and hard to read or even, in some cases, to identify as to type. (The family records at the back of the scrapbook are in ink and are quite legible.)
It is difficult to determine who did most of the compiling of the clippings and other items at the front of the scrapbook. A few clippings relate to Virgil's tenure in the 1880s as judge of the Court of the Ordinary in Crawford County, Georgia, and several other items initialed "V.S.H". make me feel Virgil may have helped compile the scrapbook (and perhaps is responsible for much of it). My guess is that Anna wrote most of the family records entries, though--especially likely since they are records of her ancestors and siblings, not Virgil's. (Perhaps the young couple already had written records of his family in their possession.) The handwriting of a few family-records entries, however, match the "V.S.H" initialings--notably the entry of of Virgil's birth date and the birthdates of two children born to Virgil and Anna. Interestingly, there is no entry for the date of the marriage of Virgil and Anna, although there is a brief newspaper item about it in the front section.
For a quick reference to how the families in the records section relate to Anna:
(In the order in which they appear in the scrapbook)
Elijah H. Hicks and Martha M. Fudge were Anna's maternal grandparents.
Thomas Dickson, Sr. and Anna McCook were Anna's paternal grandparents.
Thomas Dickson (Jr.) and Mary Jane Hicks were Anna's parents.
Regarding the reliability of the dates contained in the family records section: The scrapbook is largely circa 1870s-1880s and the earliest date in the family records is 1788, so it is quite clear that, with the exception of a few later ones, the events were not recorded as they occurred but were written down to preserve family history. The dates in the Elijah H. Hicks-Martha M. Fudge records and in the Thomas Dickson (Sr.)-Anna McCook records may very well have been copied directly from an existing older written record such as a family Bible--or possibly they were provided verbally by an older living relative. The records for the Thomas Dickson (Jr.)-Mary Jane Hicks family could possibly have been drawn from Anna's own memory; as the oldest daughter of that family, she would likely have been quite familiar with them. (Interestingly, when compared to the record contained in the Thomas Dickson (Jr.)-Mary Jane Hicks family Bible*, spellings of some names are different in the scrapbook, though the dates seem in agreement. This poses something of a mystery, although if Anna was the scrapbook-record compiler and used her parents' Bible as a source, she may have simply modified the spellings to those she and her brothers and sisters had come to prefer over the years rather than those recorded in the Bible.) My feeling is that the scrapbook records were compiled with a desire to preserve an accurate record of family history and that the dates were probably obtained and recorded with reasonable care.
The scrapbook was for many years in the possession of my maternal great-aunts, Lorena Newberry and Nellie Mae Newberry, both late of Lizella, Bibb County, Georgia, who may have inherited it from their mother, Mary Leola Dickson Newberry* Leola (my maternal great-grandmother) was Anna's youngest sister.
I have transcribed the records accurately to the best of my ability, noting pagination and preserving line breaks, spelling, capitalization, and punctuation (including the "ditto" marks) as well as I could. In addition to the family records, I have also included transcriptions of a few "family life events" newspaper clippings from the scrapbook.
* Those interested in the families represented here may also wish to see my transcriptions of the Thomas Dickson - Mary Jane Hicks family and Columbus Madison Newberry - Mary Elizabeth "Mollie" Marshall family Bible records.

Underlining denotes words, letters, or numerals about which notable doubt about what was intended existed in the transcriber's mind.
