Newberry/Marshall Family Bible

Columbus Madison Newberry - Mary Elizabeth Marshall (Mollie Marshall) family Bible records, 1870 publication date, record dates 1840 to 1885, transcribed by Gina Ruth Smith (Dodd), May 30, 2004, in Crawford County, Georgia.  This family has connections to Bibb County, Georgia and Crawford County, Georgia.  Family lore has it that Columbus Madison Newberry was also called "Lum" Newberry. He and his wife and some other family members are buried at Lizella United Methodist Church Cemetery on South Lizella Road in Lizella, Bibb County, Georgia.  During the Civil War, Columbus Madison Newberry attained the rank of 2nd Lieutenant, Co. C 27th Regiment, Jackson's Guards, Georgia Volunteer Infantry, C. S. A.

Note from transcriber: The family records below are contained in the Newberry family Bible, in May 2004 in the possession of my mother, Ruth Newberry Smith of Crawford County, Georgia. The Bible was for many years in the possession of her paternal aunts, Lorena Newberry and Nellie Mae Newberry, both late of Lizella, Bibb County, Georgia; they were daughters of John Lee Newberry and Mary Leola Dickson Newberry. I have transcribed the records accurately to the best of my ability, noting pagination and preserving line breaks, spelling, capitalization, and punctuation as well as I could. Those interested in this family may also wish to see my transcriptions of the Thomas Dickson - Mary Jane Hicks Bible family  records and of scrapbook family records apparently compiled by Virgil S. Holton and Anna Elizabeth Dickson Holton (later Dent).

Many of the records in the Newberry Bible appear to have been entered at the same time,  probably around 1870-71. (Since this Bible appears to have been published circa 1870, the family probably entered pertinent records to date soon after obtaining the Bible and then added a few more as they occurred.) The handwriting of the entries looks like that of one or possibly two persons. Entries all appear to be in ink, though differences in "ink" color (ranging from brown to grey) leave a possibility that one or two may be in pencil. On blank pages at the front of the Bible, several inscriptions--some in ink, some in pencil--identify the Bible's owner: "Mr. C. M. Newberry  His Book  The Holy Bible", ""Mr. C. M. Newberry   Holy Bible   Bibb Co., Ga.", etc.

The Bible is in rather poor condition. Both boards are still present but the spine is missing. There are many loose pages and sections, and considerable crumbling and/or edge damage to pages. All the family records pages are loose in the book. The front title page reads in part:  NEW ILLUSTRATED DEVOTIONAL AND POLYGLOT FAMILY BIBLE (...) PUBLISHED BY THE NATIONAL PUBLISHING COMPANY, AND JONES BROTHERS & CO.  The reverse of this page reads: Entered according to Act of Congress, in the year 1870, by J. R. JONES, In the office of the Libraries of Congress, at Washington, District of Columbia.

Also stored in the Bible is a Certificate of Merit awarded to Roff Newberry by "Public Schools  State of Georgia  City of Macon  and County of Bibb", dated June 2nd 1899 and signed by

W. B. Redding as Teacher and D. Q. Abbott as Superintendent.

Within the records below, italic font represents transcriber's notes.

Bold Face Type  represents printed headings on family records pages.

Underlining denotes words, letters, or numerals about which notable doubt about what was intended existed in the transcriber's mind.
