Totally unexpected the news of the death of Mrs. Saluda Hicks, the
devoted wife of Mr. James T. Lucas, of Panhandle, cast a sudden glow over the
hearts of her large circle of friends in Reynolds, in Butler and throughout
Taylor County Friday morning when it was learned that she had passed away at her
home the night before after an illness of less than 24 hours from paralysis of
the brain and from which she never regained consciousness from an attack
Thursday. Mrs. Lucas was a native of Crawford County where she was reared and
educated. Besides a heartbroken husband she leaves to mourn their loss four
sons, three daughters, one sister, a host of loving friends and neighbors.
Messrs. L.M. Lucas, of Sandersville; J.H. Lucas, of Macon; L.B. and O.R. Lucas,
of this county are her sons, while her daughters are: Mrs. M. Carnes, of
Roberta; Mrs. D.D. Moncrief, of Shelbyville, Tenn. and Miss Lucile Lucas of this
county. Her only sister is Mrs. Mary Hatcher, of Eastman, Ga. Her many
sorrowing neighbors pronounce her as one of the best women in the world. A
Christian, a moral, helpful and kind neighbor and friend has
gone, while a loving angel has been added to the host in Heaven. Mrs. Lucas was
68 years of age, and from childhood a consecrated Christian and member of the
Methodist church. Her remains were laid to rest Saturday
morning in the cemetery at Crowell Methodist Church following an impressive
funeral service conducted by her former pastor, Rev. J.H. Stanford of Columbus.
