Leonard Frank Smisson, Jr. -FORT VALLEY - Leonard Frank "Lon" Smisson left us Tuesday morning, August 5, 2003 to fly the friendly skies with his brother, Chris. Lon was an amazing man who graced the world with his presence for 56 years. He was an author, a sailor, a poet, a pilot, a lobbyist and advocate for the rights of handicapped individuals everywhere, an inspiration, a friend to all who know him, a strong Christian and a member of Andrews United Methodist Church. -Services will be held at 11A.M., Friday, August 8, 2003 at Fort Valley United Methodist Church with burial following in Oaklawn Cemetery. Rev. Gene Bates will officiate. He is preceded in death by his brother, Christofer Bernard Smisson. Lon came into the world with a brilliant mind that was trapped in a body that refused to cooperate. However, he did not let his body hinder his life. He worked diligently to achieve academic success on his own and was instrumental in the creation, lobbying and implementation of several laws benefiting those who are handicapped. The first of these laws, The Wheelchair Lemon Law, breezed through both the Georgia House and Senate at a record pace. Lon loved his family, his friends, and his life. Though he is gone, his life is not lost. His life will be remembered and celebrated for generations to come. The family requests donations be made to Andrew United Methodist Church Building Fund, 2430 Hwy 127, Kathleen, Georgia 31047. Rooks Funeral Home in Fort Valley has charge of arrangements.
