Moncrief, Richard Bassett
Mr. R. B. (Richard Bassett) Moncrief, age 88, Confederate soldier, died at
his home in Roberta this morning at about 5 o'clock. He suffered a partial
stroke of paralysis several years ago, which confined him to the house and
around the house. "He ate supper last evening and didn't seem to be
any worse than usual on retiring." Dr. Johnson was called in and medical
treatment administered. At two o'clock, he called to his wife to raise him
up in bed and to call the doctor. She, being alone, crossed the street and
called Mr. J. V. Walker to call the doctor back. Death was instantaneous.
After the close of the War Between the States, he came to Crawford County.
He, having been born in Bibb County, and settled on the old Patterson place,
near Roberta. Which place he remained for over fifty years. About 1880, he
married Miss Edna Alberta (Allie) Wilson, from this marriage two children
survive: Mr. N. B. (Sam) Moncrief, Long Island, NY, and Mr. C. B. H.
(Crawford Bennett Harrison) Moncrief, Knoxville, GA. Two sisters, Mrs.
Sarah Lewis and Mrs. Sifronia Stripling, both of South Georgia, several
grand children and other relatives survive. He was a member of the
Congregational Church at Walker's Chapel. Funeral services will be
