Lights From The Past
Dixon (Dickson) United Methodist Church
The first known record of Dickson Methodist Episcopal Church is contained in the deed, dated December 10, 1830. The land was given by Bryant Lane and was entrusted to the care of five trustees – Benjamin Dickson, Josiah Dickson, James Long, Perry McGee, and Henry Vinson. (Interesting note: Josiah Dickson was the father-in-law of Bryant Lane.) The deed states that an existing Methodist Meeting House and Grave Yard are on the property and are made a part of the deed. Although the exact date when Dickson Methodist Episcopal Church was organized is not known, but it must have existed prior to the date of the deed. Other sources indicate that it may have existed as early as 1827.
In accordance with the practice of the times, the original church building faced east . There were four doors – two in front and two in back. There was a partition down the middle. The men sat on one side and the women on the other.
At some point in the late 1920s or early 1930s, the spelling of the name was changed from Dickson to Dixon.
The church building was destroyed and rebuilt at least twice, most recently in May of 1939, when it was blown down by a tornado. A year later, the pastor and two of the trustees took out a note from the Methodist Church to replace the building. The amount of the note was $150.00 The church was rebuilt by volunteer labor, and was reoriented south, to face Sandy Point Road. There was a dedication service for the new church in August 1939. Of the interior fixtures, the only items salvaged were the posts at each end of the altar rail. Over the following years, the church was bricked, a fellowship hall was added, and another addition was made to provide a kitchen and Sunday School rooms. In 1986, the sanctuary was renovated and a choir loft added. In September 2000, a steeple was placed on the church.
Through God’s grace, our church has persevered through good times and bad for more than 170 years. He is not done with us yet. We believe God is now building us up to serve Him anew in our community. We value our history and traditions because they give us strength to face and embrace a changing and unpredictable future.
