Schuman (Shuman) Family of Effingham Co., Ga.

Descendants of: James Thomas Shuman

Effingham County, in the beginning, was primarily German settlers. Although James' father,
Martin Shuman, did not have the "c" in his name, it became the spelling for the family that
continued to live in Effingham County, while his sibblings, in Bryan County, carried the spelling
of "Shuman". They are still the same family.

1 James Thomas Shuman b. 1777 d. Abt 1822 m. Martha Key m. 19 Sep 1801 b. Abt 1777 He was baptized at Ebenezer Lutheran Church, Effingham Co., Ga. James was about 16 years old when his father, Martin Shumann, died. As heir, he received cattle that was to go to him when he came to the age of 21 years. Evidently, Martha and James may have had a daughter that did not survive. She is shown on the 1820 census, but is not there in 1830 or thereafter. George H. Shuman was appointed executor of James' estate on 9-3-1827 in Effingham Co. which would indicate that James had died before then. According to a deed in Book A of the Houston Co, Ga. Book of Deeds, George Henry Shuman and Clem Powers divided a plot of land on 8-29-1822, and George was administrator of James's estate at that time. So James must have died before Aug., 1822.
