Old Proctor Family Cemetery

Located off Hendley-Proctor Rd. outside Garfield, Emanuel County, Georgia

While on an ancestor trip during the month of April 2001, I was in search of my maternal ancestors, the Proctors of Emanuel County, Georgia. I had already visited the gravesite of my great grandfather Jonas R. Proctor and his wife, my great grandmother Matilda Grimes Proctor at Hebron Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery in Garfield, Georgia. Jonas R. and Matilda Proctor were the parents of my grandfather, Noah Allen Proctor, born 30 July 1879. Noah is buried in Sparta, Georgia. I did visit, also, at Hebron the graves of Noah's brother Francis Marion Proctor and his wife Leona (Lee) Proctor and their son Claude A. and daughter Ollie. Ira Walter Proctor (another brother of Noah Allen's) and his wife Iola J. are buried there too and their son Teddy Osko. I was quite excited at having found and visited the graves of my mother's people. I still was looking very much forward to seeing the Old
Proctor Family Cemetery. I had directions I had gotten from Gone, But Not Forgotten A Tombstone Registry of Emanuel County, Georgia compiled by James E. Dorsey and John K. Derden, and so my husband and I set off to find it.

As it turned out, there was no Old Proctor Family Cemetery to find after all. Someone had purchased the property, and five years ago, had destroyed it. I was certainly hurt and disappointed to discover this. Buried there were Allen M. Proctor (Jonas R. Proctor's father) and his wife Sarah Hendley Proctor. Also buried there, as Nancy Crawford and I have determined were Allen M.'s father Jonas William Proctor and his wife Harriet Ann Proctor and their son John Proctor. It was truly heartbreaking to observe where this cemetery had been and think of the ages of the remains buried there. I have included a photo of where the graves were.
