FAYETTE VOLUNTEERS
By Gary Davis White, Jr.
The 30th Regiment
was reorganized in 1862 and the Fayette Volunteers (Co H prior to reorganization
and Co. G after reorg.) are easily confused with the Campbell Grays (Co. G prior
to reorganization and Co. H after reorg.). To further confuse matters, some
rolls and contemporary accounts call the Fayette County company G, while others
call it Co. H.
In short, the Regimental structure was this;
Company A: Butts County "Butts
Invincibles" Became Co. I upon reorganization in 1862
Company B: Butts County "Bailey
Volunteers" Became Co. A upon reorganization in 1862
Company C: Spalding and Butts
Counties "Hunter Guards" Became Co. F upon reorganization in 1862
Company D: Bibb County "Hugeney
Rifles" Unaffected by reorganization
Company E: Henry County "Bartow
Invincibles" Became Co. B upon reorganization in 1862
Company F: Campbell County "Campbell
Sharpshooters" Became Co. C upon reorganization in 1862
Company G: Campbell County "Campbell
Grays" Became Co. H upon reorganization in 1862
Company H: Fayette County "Fayette
Volunteers" Became Co. G upon reorganization in 1862
Company I: Clayton County "Clayton
Invincibles" Became Co. E upon reorganization in 1862
Company K: Campbell County "Chattahoochee
Volunteers" Unchanged during reorganization
Although
my work has centered around the Fayette County Company of the 30th GA Inf, I am
in the process of compiling a complete regimental history. At this time, little
has been written about the brave men of the 30th, who suffered tremendous loss during
the war. The Fayette Volunteers of the 30th GA suffered 54 casualties-Killed, Wounded,
Captured-some more than once, (that's almost a 50% casualty rate) while scores
of others died of disease or camp-related illness. My g-g-g grandfather James
W. White was among those killed during Hardee's Corps charge on the Federal Lines
in front of Atlanta on Jul. 22 1864. At this time, only 3 "Fayette Volunteers"
are known to have surrendered with the remnant of the Army of Tenn. at Greensboro
NC on April 26 1865.
The regiment fought in the following Campaigns -
Vicksburg/Jackson MS
Chickamauga, GA
Chattanooga, TN
Resaca/Adairsville, GA
Kennesaw Mountain, GA
Atlanta/Jonesboro, GA
Franklin/Nashville, TN
Bentonville, NC

Although 113 names appear on the rolls of Company H/G, it is highly likely that the company averaged in the neighborhood of 50-60 men in mid- 1863 and probably 35-40 during Sherman's March to Atlanta. By the time Atlanta fell, the Company likely fielded less than 20 men. After Hood's abortive Franklin/Nashville campaign, the company (at this time probably numbering about 5) was involved in yet another reorganization. The once proud 30th Georgia Infantry Regiment was consolidated with the 25th and 66th Georgia Regiments, 1st Confederate Infantry Regiment, and the 1st Georgia Sharpshooters Battalion on April 9 and designated the 1st Georgia Infantry Battalion. The department was surrendered a few weeks later on April 26, 1865.
