Note 1. Henry Kitchens served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War and died of the mumps, 10 July 1862 while serving in Richmond, VA. He entered the hospital on June 2, 1862. There is some indication that his father was Seaborn Kitchens and that his Mother's first name was Eli, but no factual information is available to verify this. Henry joined the Confederate Army as a 2nd Corporal on March 4, 1862 along with 82 others, including his father-in-law Private Eli Raley. He served under the command of Captain Matthew Robert Hall (later promoted to rank of Colonel) and under the direction of 1st Lt. Edwin A. Brinkley; 2nd Lt Stephen R. Lowe; 2nd Lt Henry W. Shurley Jr.; 1st Sgt George W. Roberts; 2nd Sgt Robert R. Johnson; 3rd Sgt John R. Cason; 4th Sgt. Albert Duncan Johnson; and 5th Sgt Thomas N.Shurley. Columbus A. Jones served as 1st Corporal and Henry Kitchens served as 2nd Corporal. His selection to this rank out of 83 soldiers would be of interest to know.
Excerpts from Henry's Civil War records are as follows:
" I certify that the within named Henry Kitchens a Corporal of Captain M.R. Hall's Company of the 48th Regiment of Georgia Volunterrs, born in Warren County in the State of Georgia, aged 31 years, 5 feet, 6 inches high, fair complexion, grey eyes, light hair, and by occupation a Farmer, was enlisted by Capt. M. R. Hall at Warrenton, Georgia , on the 4th day of March 1862, to serve three years, and died at Richmond, Virginia, on the 16th day of July 1862. The said Henry Kitchens has never received any pay, and has pay due from the 4th day of March 1862 to the 16th day of July 1862."
Henry Kitchen's wife, Elizabeth Kitchens acquired the services of a military attorney named R. H. Jones, from the 22nd Georgia Regiment in Warren County, Georgia, to gain access to any funds or personal effects left behind by her husband. The doccument read as follows:
" Know all men by this ???? that I Elizabeth Kitchens of said State and County bring the ???? of Henry Kitchens deceased who died in the service of the Confederate States on the 16th day of August 1862 (note that the statement above said July 1862). I ..... make ....and .....Ordance Seargent of the 22 nd Georgia Regt. from Warren County, Georgia my one and lawful attorney in .... to receive and receipt for all moneys, goods, and items that may be due me as heir of my said husband Henry Kitchens deceased by virtue of his military or other service in the confederate States hereby ratifying and confirming all lawful ...my said attorney may do in the.... my hand and signed this 21st March 1863". signed: Elizabeth Kitchens
After several months and no response, Elizabeth's attorney wrote a letter requesting the status of Mr. Elizabeth Kitchens claim. It read as follows:
"Some time in the later part of March last I left with you some claims in favor of Mrs Eli Raley & Mrs. Kitchens whose husbands were killed or died in the service of the Confederate State which claims were for services rendered by their husbands in the Army. You took my name and promised me to write to me as soon as their clims were properly audited and liquidated and at which time I could receive the money. I have written you once and ....(a fairly long sentence here was unreadable)...write me how their claims stand. I also got a certificate from the Captain approved by the co. of Commander of the 48th Ga. Regt. to which their husbands belonged as you requested. The names of their husbands are Eli Raley & Henry Kitchens."
"I also left with you another claim in favor of Mrs. Emeline Edwards wife ......Edwards of the 12the Ga Regt which you promised to attend to. You said you would send and get a certificate from the Regt in the ammount due her....I am ancious to hear about these claims, et etc....I hope you will write me the exact standing of the claims. I have an opportunity to come down to Richmond and collect them if they are properly audited and ready for settlement. Let me know. Yours Truly, R. J. Jones, 22nd Ga. Regt"
The results of this effort lead to the following certificate: "THE CONFEDERATE STATES, To: Mrs Elizabeth Kitchens widow of Henry Kitchens deceased late Corporal of Capt......Co. B, 48th Regiment Georgia Volunteers. ... For pay of said deceased from 30th of April 1862 the date of his last payment to 16th July 1862 the date of his death, being 2 months 16 days @ $13.00 $32.00 ... As per Certificate filed herewith and Rept. from 2 M.J's office...Payable to R. F. Jones, Atty for Claimants, Calhoun Vo., Ga...He has received hisbounty.... Whole amount of commutation for clothing drawn by the said Henry Kitchens from the day of his enlistment to the day of his death...TREASURY DEPARTMENT, Second Auditor's Office, March 23rd, 1863, M.B. Rosken, Clerk"
Speculation (without solid proof) is that Henry Kitchens is either the illigimate child of Lana (Laney) Kitchens (b. abt 1810 Twiggs Co., GA, d.ca 1849/51) married to Thomas McGough, or that he changed his name from Henry McGough to Henry Kitchens following his mother's death. Lana (Laney) and Thomas were married on 24 April 1832 in Jones County. Information from Debra Waldrop at bakerdeb@jps.net and Barbara Blaschke at barbarab@cox.rr.com has it that Thomas McGough was an alcoholic and, after Lana (Laney) died, left several of his younger children with relatives in Warren County, GA, before moving to Florida and eventually to Texas. The move of the McGough's to Warren County is supported by information that shows that Geogianna McGough b.c1849/50 Ga died in Waren County in c1850. Yet she is identified as being 1 year of age in the 1850 Jones County Census. So she may not have died until very late in 1850 or possibly in 1851. The 1850 Census identifies Thomas as being 49 and born in SC; Lana as 40, also born in SC; Henry as 18, thomas as 17; William as 14; James as 11; Eliza as 7; Lana as 4; and Georgiann as 1. The Family Group Record, ID 1144327, reveals that all but Eliza and Henry moved to Texas.
The early 1850's marks the point in time where all records on Henry McGough stropped and those on Henry Kitchens suddenly came into existence. No records exist that a Henry McGough served in the Confederacy, seemingly odd considering he would have been 28 at the start of the war, nor does a search of records reveal his existance anyplace, in any other states after 1850. The earlest records found thus far on Henry Kitchens, in addition to the military records above, are:
- Served as a witness in the probated will for James Kitchens, dated 28 July 1854 (Wiley Kitchens was the Executor and the witnesses included Henry Kitchens, Jeremia Killbrew, and Ezra MCCrary). Interestingly, Wiley Kitchens is James Kitchens's 1st cousin, about five to six years apart in age, but also the older brother to Laney (Kitchens) McGough, believed to be Henry Kitchens' mother.
- Warren County Propery Deed Records (Book 2501) dated 22 May 1858.
- Court-on disbursements 11 March 1863 list families of Warren Infantry drawing $150 support from the Court-on-disbursement. It identifies "Kitchens, Henry & wife and 4 children.
Ref: Warren County, Georgia, 1793 - 1900, Genealogy II, Authored by Daniel Nathan Crumpton, dated 1993
Interestingly, Lana (Laney) and Thomas McGough's 2nd son (Thomas McGough, b.1833) is evidently named after his father, and their 3rd son, William McGough (b. 1837), likely was named after Lana's father, William Kitchens. With Henry being their 1st son, wouldn't it seem reasonable to think he would have been named either Thomas, the father, or William, the grandfather, considering the practice of naming first born sons after their fathers in those times. This adds support to the possibility that Henry may have been an illigimate child of Lana (Laney). It's also possible, on the other hand, that the reported rift between Henry and his father, may have led Henry to assume his mother's maiden name following her death. No adoption or guardianship records were found in Twiggs, Jones or Warren Counties to indicate an action of that nature, nor have any records been located to show a change in name.
Note 2. Elizabeth Kitchens maiden name was Elizabeth Raley. Presumably she is the daughter of Eli and Martha Raley, listed in the Warren County 1850 as Eli, age 29, Martha 30, Elizabeth 10, Charles 7, Eliza 5, and Mary 1. Both Elizabeth and Martha appear to have lost their husbands to the war, as discussed in the letter above in which both widows joined in their efforts to regain their husbands effects and back pay....Glascock County marriage and census data indicates that Elizabeth married William Norris in 1869. She was listed as age 33 in the 1870 Censys and he was 60. Information from Willa Cooper has it that Eli Raley possibly could be the Elias Raley that married Martha Spears on 29 June 1845 (license issued 27 Jan 1845). This is unlikely, however, given Elizabeth's birth date in abt 1841. More likely, is the more recent information received form Helen Marler, which identifies an Eli Raley married to Matha Spurling and listed in the family chart for Aaron Raley, born 1853, GA. Family members listed in the chart are Elizabeth born 1840, Hanna 1843, Eliza 1846, Mary 1849, and Narcissus 1853. This matches information in the 1850 census except for the addition of Narcissus, born after 1850. Willa Cooper also provided a reference source which list a Martha Raley, 24 April 1821 - 3 Nov 1903, buried at Mill Creek.
Note 3. No record could be found of a William Henry Johnson (as listed in the Molly Will Johnson Kitchens' Family Bible) in Handcock County, GA. But the 1850 Census for the county lists a Henry W. Johnson, age 20, working on the farm of Ellison Worthy (age 54, born in NC). Others in the household were Mary 55, Mary 18, Roberta M. 14, Goodwin Johnson (likely Henry W.'s brother), and Susan Worths age 60. The 1860 Census identifies in Dwelling House No. 650, a Henry W. Johnson 32, Roberta 25, James 6, Mary 4, Thomas 2, and an infant 6/12. Based on the ties evident in the Worthy and Johnson families, it seems reasonable that Roberta was the daughter of Ellison Worthy, and that Mary 4, her daughter, is Mary Ann Johnson, born 1856. Mary Ann's full name as shown in the Kitchens family Bible is Mary Ann Elizabeth Nancy Naomi Johnson. In findagrave.com for William Henry Johnson is displayed the following informatin. William Henry Johnson Birth Date: 1830, Birth Place: Hancock County, Georgia, USA; Death Date: 1880; Death Place: Hancock County, Georgia, USA; Cemetery: Zebulon Methodist Church Cemetery; Burial or Cremation Place: Zebulon, Hancock County, Georgia, USA; Spouse: Roberta Matilda Johnson; Children: James Ellison Johnston; Robert Pendleton Johnston; Henry A. Johnston; Sallie Eva Johnston and Mary Ann Elizabeth Nancy N Johnson b. 1856
Note 4. The 1850 Hancock Census also identifies a Susan Worthy, age 60, apparently living alone. What relationship she is to Ellison Worthy is not known. However, the 1840 Census also lists these two names as living in seperate households.
