Family Notes
The 1900 Census for Washington County, GA, list Jim Johnson as being 72 years of age, which would place his birth year as 1828. It list his family as Annie 25, Cleveland 8, Macon 6, Walter 4, and Morgan 1.
Records at the Univ. of Georgia State Archives reveals that James M. Johnson and his first wife, Willie Garland, were married in 1846, which would place his birth year likely in the late 1820's (agreeing with the year 1828 shown above). He is believed to have moved to Mitchell (or possibly Ghalker), GA, shortly after the death of his 1st wife then married Martha Anne Matilda Johnston (age 16) and had at least six children. They lived near Chalker, GA, in Washington County. Although the exact location of his grave is not known, it is believed to be at the Pine Hill Church cemetery near Warthen, GA, near the grave sites of several of his sons.
Eliza Jane Harrell's mother died (as the story goes) either while, or soon after, giving birth to Eliza Jane. She was traveling in a wagon at the time and started having problems. Eliza Jane was then raised by her Todd grandparents and an Uncle, William "Will" Todd, whose parents were William Henry Todd and Martha Norris (buried between Milledgeville and Sparta, GA). Her father, James Marian Harrell is said to have left the area soon after his wife's death. The 1870 Census Records for Glascock County list on page 98, Roll 152, Row 201??, a William Todd, age 52, Martha Todd, age 48, Mary Todd, age 19, William Todd, age 8, and Eliza J. Harrell, age 3.
Steven A. and Eliza Harrel Johnson lived about 1-mile southwest of Edgehill, GA, at the time of his death in 1923. He died of a heart attack while a sleep during the night and was discovered by his youngest son who couldn't get him to turn over in bed. Ernest was sleeping with him at the time. The story has it that someone drove over one of Eliza's chickens earlier that day so she envited her daughter Molly Will and her family join them for supper. Both Molly Will and another, Minnie Lee, lived just a short walking distance away at the time.
The Jasper C. Johnson grave plot at the Jackson Baptist Church also contained three unmarked graves and the graves of James T. Johnson 11/26/1922-12/15/1944 (Pvt. 351 INA World War II) and Clarence E. Johnson 11/20/1920-11/29/1973 (GA Pvt USA). Grave sites down the road in the Amie S. Page Baptist Church Cemetery included those of Pauline Johnson b. 11/13/1913 (married to ???? Page), and Lucille Johnson Simpson (youngest child of James M. Johnson and Anne Johnson).
Hugh Raley Jr's parents were Willy Hugh Raley and Effy Bales Raley. His grandparents were "Will Raley" and Mary Raley.
This years (1999) Mitchell community celebration proved to be an overwhelming success in at least one respect: it paved the way for a first time meeting between three decendents of James M. Johnson. This included Lillie Raley and Billie Stephenson (twin sisters) from the first family and Lavin Mason, from the second. While two of the family members (Lillie Raley and Josephene Snider) live near Mitchell, and only a few miles apart, they were unaware that they are acquainted. So this turned out to be the first time that members from the two families had knowlingly gotten together, at least in recent history.
What makes this occassion of interest (and please pay close attention here), is that Lavin, who is Old Jim Johnson's "grandchild" by the sixth child of the second marriage, is a 2nd cousin to Lillie and Billie (twin sisters), and his "great grandchildren" from the sixth child of his first marriage...definately a mind twister!
