Stedman Baptist Church, 1911.

BY LOIS NEWMAN
April 29, 1984

Stedman Baptist Church was constituted in the Spring of 1911,
in the old Steadman school building that stood about where Enoch Roberts' barn
now stands.  According to the late V. J. Roberts, who stated that he was present
the constituting presbytery was Rev. A. Pope,  Rev. N. R. Williamson and probably
Rev. M. V. Mize.  Rev. Pope was elected Pastor and Mr. J. C. Wood was elected clerk.

Charter members are not now known, since earliest church records have been lost, but Mr. Roberts
recalled that Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Pope, Mr. and Mrs. W. F. Newman, Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Wood joined
that day and he recalled others who were present who may have joined also.  Those he named who
were present included Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Clacknum, Mr. and Mrs. Non Gladden, Mrs. J. M. Batchelor
and possibly others.

Others who are said to have joined during the first year were Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Saxon, Mr. and Mrs. C. C. Allen
Mr. and Mrs. C. I. Allen, Mr. and Mrs. M. C. Allen, Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Allen, Mr. and Mrs. D. W. Allen
Mr. and Mrs. L. P. Allen, Sr., Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Allen, Rev. and Mrs. Homer Willoughby.  Some of these
may have been charter members but associational records show that some where members of other churches in
1911.  Dr. C.. W. Pope stated to this writer that he was not a church member at that time but he was present and he
named some of the same people named by Mr. Roberts. ...........

(Lois Newman was truly the historian for Haralson County having spent over 20 years assembling information for her book

"Haralson County, A History".  Her work surpasses all others.  She was a neighbor and the mother of my best friend during my childhood.

Our country lives were built around the Steadman Baptist Church activities including Sunday School.  BTU, socials, picnics and influenced our

lives in a positive way.  Liz Robertson)
