EXCERPTS FROM DIARY OF HADDIE BARRON KELLY

While this is a very personal dairy of my grandmother, Haddie Barron Kelly, she write about many of the people mentioned in this genealogy. She also tells about the weather, food, entertainments and generally the type of life the people of Monticello enjoyed. Haddie is the 2nd wife of John Henry Kelly, who is always referred to as Mr. Kelly. Her family included three children by Mr. Kelly's first wife, Ina, wife of Dr. Petrie, who lived in Athens, Ga.; Troy, who never married, and Elmo Clyde Kelly, who lived in Monticello all of his life; and her own children, John Henry, Jr. (J.H.); Harrison Barron, (Barron); Haddie Brown, Martha (she calls Deala) and Mary Kelly.

It starts June 3, 1898, school closed today. The little boys say the teachers told them not to do anything but what they wanted to and they knew they were not going to want to pull weeds and work. June 4. Emma George PERSONS came in to spend Commencement with us. June 7, Miss Mell COLLIER'S room had the stage last night. J.H. spoke "Night Jess 'fore Xmas", by Eugene Field. He did nicely. Barron was in a tableaux - "Making hay while the sun shines". Ruth JORDAN was sitting on a big pile of hay and he was standing by a rack - dressed in his dirty clothes and a great big hat. Haddie Brown, Lucie BENTON and Cora HARVEY sand "What Will you Take for Me, Papa?" They look so sweet and did well. 8th. Clyde's room spoke for a medal last night. Wade CONNOR was awarded the medal tho' most people thought Basil BLACKNELL ought to have had it. Ruby POPE, Bessie PYE and Norwood OXFORD received diplomas. Norwood delivered the valedictory.
