The Petrie Family of Jasper County, Georgia
The following is transcribed by Suzanne Forte (suzanneforte@bellsouth.net) from the book
"The Kellys of Jasper County, Georgia, Descendants of the Revolutionary Soldier Jacob Kelly and wife Susanna Allen"
by Dorothy Kelly MacDowell, 1984
INA MAUD KELLY married DR. CHARLES BARKER PETRIE. The following information is from a letter from James Troy Petrie, New York, on August 8, 1983. Information was also sent to me in April 1962 by his late sister, Mrs. W. J. Morrison, then living in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
To quote from letter of Troy Petrie:
"Dr. Charles Barker Petrie was the son of John Wesley Petrie, a farmer, who was born November 27, 1830 (death date I do not know) and Mary Harned (dates not known). He was born in Fairview, Kentucky on January 3, 1863. In medical school he earned Prof. H. B. Ritter's prize in obstetrics and gynecology, a gold medal. In June of 1889 he graduated from the Kentucky School of Medicine, one of twelve students on the "roll of honor". In 1892, he married Ina Maud Kelly, exact date unknown. In 1893 they took a belated honeymoon at the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago. He practiced medicine in Macon, Georgia, Hopkinsville and Louisville, Kentucky. Two of his brothers were also doctors. He was a real estate broker in Louisville and New York. In World War I he taught biology in the Louisville Boy's High School for two years, 1916-1918 (I think maybe only one year) He died in New York City, September 6, 1925.
"Ina Maud Kelly was born in Monticello, Georgia, on March 28 1871. In her early life she did some good oil painting which decorated the walls of our homes until 1929. She was active in women's clubs in Louisville. In 1915 and 1916 she was Corresponding Secretary and in 1917 to 1920 she was President of the Woman's Missionary Society of the Louisville Conference, Methodist Episcopal Church South. Her Latin was good enough so that when she tutored her son Troy when he was in high school, she could read Caesar without the use of a dictionary. She died (cancer) in New York City, May 25, 1936".
