THE 1827 GEORGIA LAND LOTTERY: LIBERTY COUNTY FORTUNATES
The method of distributing Georgia's newly acquired territories by lottery was unique to Georgia, and not used by any other state. After the Lottery was authorized by an act of the state legislature, the citizens of Georgia could register in their respective counties of residence, if they were eligible under certain qualifications noted below this list. Their names taken in their counties of residence, and the lot and district numbers submitted by the surveyors, were all sent to the state capitol at Milledgeville. Then the commissioners who were appointed by the Governor drew the names and numbers from two separate wheels or drums. Afterwards, the fortunate drawer (simply known as the fortunate) would take out a grant to the lot he drew, paying the grant fee specified by law. If he did not take out a grant, the lot reverted back to the state. There were no requirements for cultivation or residence of any lot drawn and granted in the state lotteries.
