CYRUS WEST: DEATH OF A NONAGENARIANFrom the Savannah News Cyrus West better known as “Daddy Cy,” died on Friday of last week at the Biddleford plantation in Liberty County, aged about ninety years. “Daddy Cy” was a trusty house servant of the late Joseph Clay, and was born at or near Sunbury, at that time a port of entry. When the deceased grew up he married Abbey, a house servant of the late Doctor Dana Stevens, who after Abbey's marriage, bought her husband so they could live together, and West was given charge of the doctor's stock on Biddleford, Oakland and Palmira plantations, which he looked after during the absence of Dr. Stevens and family during their summers in the north. During the war “Daddy Cy” was in charge of Cherry Hill, one of the doctor's plantations in Jefferson county, until after the Sherman raid, when he returned to the Biddleford plantation, where he lived and died respected by all, as he had an excellent reputation for integrity, industry and steadiness of purpose. He was the father of thirteen children all of whom inherited the honesty and honorable characteristics of the father, who was a life-long member of the Sunbury Baptist church and was for years one of its deacons.
