Waggoner Grove Cemetery
also known as
Hitchcock or Sims Cemetery
Waggoner Grove Church Rd. (dirt)
Colbert, Madison Co., GA (GMD 382)

Survey and Photos by
Christine Crumley Brown

From the traffic light in Colbert, turn so as to cross railroad tracks. Take an immediate left at the depot, and follow this street, which makes a 90 degree right turn, until you come to a stop sign. At this intersection, turn left. This road will also take a 90-degree right turn. After the turn, you will take the first street to your left, Rosewood Drive. This will lead you to an intersection at the Waggoner Grove Baptist Church. Turn right, putting the church on your left. Continue down this road for about 1.1 mile. The drive to the cemetery angles off the road to the right at a 45-degree angle. (As of 9/12/05, watch for a realtor's sign, Byram Realty) There are no signs for the cemetery. If you watch closely, you will be able to see signs of it at the end. The day of my visit, it looked almost as though you were
driving into someone's yard at the end of the road because the area was newly mowed. There is parking on the upper end, and much more in the lower level by following the drive around to the right.

There are graves in an upper portion that I was unable to access on my first and second visits. Those will be added to this listing when I can find a way to clear the sites out.  See photo entitled Hidden Graves. These are to the left of the main cemetery near the large oak
tree shown in Unidentified graves 16-21. There is also one lone grave in the lower section of the site.

A good number of graves in this cemetery are marked only by Funeral Home Markers (FHM), and some are in the edges of the stand of
trees at the back of the lot. Often, the only date on the markers are the date of death. When this is the case, I have listed the date after
the funeral home name.
