Deeds ~ General Information

Deeds are the documents created when the ownership of land (or other property) was transferred from one person to another. Deeds involving land typically include terms of the transaction, the location and description of the land, names of adjacent landowners, and sometimes other information that can be helpful to the researcher in determining family relationships. Deeds were recorded in chronological order in Deed Books by the County Clerk and can be viewed at the Madison County Courthouse. They are also available on microfilm at the Georgia Archives as well as through the LDS Family History Library. All of the deeds are indexed in two sets of books; the Grantee Index (buyers) and the Grantor Index (sellers). The Deed Index Books list the Deed Book and page number where the transaction was recorded.
