QUITMAN GUARDS READY TO GO TO THE BORDER.
Soldier Boys not Able to Get Away Before Friday Morning.
Will Go to El Paso, Texas

While you read this the Quitman Guards, of Forsyth, one of the units of the Second Regiment, National Guard of Georgia, are possibly speeding on their way to the Mexican border.  Several days ago they received orders to move to El Paso, Texas, and freight and express cars were immediately put on the sidings at Camp Harris to take care of the equipment, the tourist sleepers were supposed to reach Macon in time for the soldier boys to entrain at noon Thursday, however, there was some delay and at the time of going to press the boys had not yet entrained and it was anticipated that it would be Friday morning before they could get away.
The boys of Company M received their pay Wednesday and that night practically all of those boys living in Forsyth came home for a last farewell, returning at midnight.  During Thursday morning they loaded their baggage and were ready to go and happy in anticipation of the long trip and their stay in a strange land.  They all like Macon, but they were tired of the sameness of their duties and welcomed a change to a different section and the consequent change of the regular routine.
The Forsyth company, with the companies from Barnesville, Griffin and Monroe, composing the third batallion of the Second Regiment, under Major Beck, and the machine gun company of Macon, will occupy one train and will be routed by Columbus, Montgomery, Mobile, New Orleans, San Antonio and El Paso, reaching their destination after four days travel on Tuesday.  Their ardor and enthusiasm will be somewhat dampened by the long and tiresome trip.
Company M was mobilized at their armory in Forsyth on Tuesday, June 26, and on Saturday, June 24, they proceeded to the mobilization camp at Macon, where they have since been.  With the exception of a few cases of measles and several sore arms, caused by vaccination and injection of the typhoid serum, there has been no sickness and the men have all improved a great deal physically.  During their stay in Macon, they made a record that reflects great credit on the men, the officers, Forsyth and Monroe County.
Exactly how long they will be on duty at the border is not known, but it is generally believed that they will be back in Georgia within three months.
