Company C, 38th Georgia Infantry

This Company was at various times Old Company A, New Company C, Company M, originally the "McLeod Artillery," and later as the "Ben Hill Guards." Men for this unit came from Montgomery, Emanuel, Bulloch, and properly other counties. This regiment was originally formed as Wright's Georgia Legion in September 1861. Within a few months, they were re-designated as the 38th Georgia Infantry Regiment and served in Lawton's Brigade, Army of Northern Virginia. They fought at the battles of Gaines Mill, VA, June 27, 1862; Fredericksburg, VA, December 13, 1862; Gettysburg, July 3, 1863; and many other battles before surrendering at Appomattox. Their history is basically the same as the 61st Georgia. A short history of their campaigns from 1864 to Appomattox is on pp. 131-34 of volume four of Lillian Henderson, Roster of the Confederate Soldiers of Georgia 1861 -1865 (1960).
